Won $5,000 on Jewel

I just returned from a 5 night cruise on the Jewel out of Tampa. Great ship, great crew and a super great casino. I won $5,000 on a penny machine when I hit the jackpot. I was betting the maximum amount of $1.25 per spin. Had I not hit the jackpot I would have been down about $200 for the entire cruise. Now I can book some more cruises with my winnings!

Did they make you fill out a W2G or other tax form? There seem to be some conflicting reports about "winnings at sea" in excess of $1199. I won $1500 on Oasis, and did NOT have to fill out anything....the machine simply printed out my voucher for $1500.....

When I won I asked and they told me that I did not have to fill out any forms or pay any taxes. I wasn't sure that they gave me the correct information so I asked someone else in the casino and they said that I didn't have to do anything. Maybe I should check with our CPA.

We played the three machines that the OP mentioned during our repo cruise and found that they were pretty generous although our winnings were nowhere near what the OP experienced. They required a bet of $1.00 or $1.25 per spin (depending on the machine) to qualify for the bonus. Goldfish and "Return of the Munny" were the very popular and generous machines. :)
