Bed bugs

Recommended Posts

I challenge anyone to go look at the pictures and video on numerous news sites of this woman's back and neck and argue she over reacted!!

I may have to change my name to OBEDBUG *snicker* this particular thread has me itching and the hair standing on the back of my neck at the same time.

I don't think anyone is arguing that she overreacted. I think we are actually arguing WHERE she got the bites from....

If this came from JOS, then why are there not more complaints? If there were bed bugs ON THE SHIP, they would be in more rooms than just one most likely......do you really think that no one else would have came forward???? Either before them or after them. If there were as many bugs as they say there were, then they obviously, were there BEFORE them. I doubt the room became infested overnight!! Swarms? Infested? Hundreds? Not overnight.

RCI has not commented on this to anyone's knowledge. We only have their side of the story.

I don't think anyone here wishes the woman any ill. However, some of the things I am reading are troublesome to me.

I would just like to see if maybe we can all accept the fact that there was an incident, it was reported and move on. Thats all. *deep sigh*

My arms and neck are itching just from reading this thread! LOL. Anyway, I found this online:

Bed bugs, best known for their part in a charming nighttime rhyme, are making a resurgence in the United States. This resurgence first occurred in hotels, followed by infestations in homes, apartments, college dormitories, condominiums, aircraft and even cruise ships.

What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are flat insects, oval in shape and roughly 3/16ths of an inch long, or about the size of an apple seed. They are brown in color until after they feed, when they turn brownish-red. Adult bed bugs can live for more than one year without feeding and can sustain extreme temperatures, making them difficult to kill.

Where do bed bugs live?

Bed bugs tend to settle in close proximity to their food source – you! During the day these nocturnal insects disappear in mattresses, sheets, furniture, behind baseboards, pictures and even torn wallpaper. At night, they come out to feed, attracted by breath and body heat.

Why are bed bugs a problem?

Bed bugs are a nuisance. When they feed, they can leave itchy, bloody welts (similar to hives) on skin. However, because bites are usually painless, many victims do not even realize that they have a problem until the infestation is large. Also, bed bugs are great hitchhikers. Once inside your home or hotel, bed bugs can spread rapidly from room to room – traveling on clothing and luggage, through pipes and even through vacuum cleaners. They are difficult to control and require the help of a professional.

How do I know if my home or hotel room is infested?

Bed bugs leave behind brown or red spots on sheets. A large infestation of bed bugs can create a musty, sweet odor, like soda pop syrup. Bed bug bites can leave itchy, bloody welts on the skin. Check for these signs of infestations when traveling, or if you suspect you may have brought the insect into your home.

What do I do if I suspect a bed bug problem?

Because bed bugs are so difficult to kill, treating for them requires the use of a licensed, professional pest control operator with specific experience treating for these pests. Treatment is extensive and first requires a thorough inspection. Training and experience are key in locating, identifying and eliminating these elusive insects.

This is SO gross. I hate bugs. I'm seriously itching like crazy right now!

You better believe that I will be checking every nook and cranny of my cabin on arrival, and will scour my belongings every night!

Make sure (since you're looking anyway) to look behind the headboard. I understand that this is as popular a hang-out for them as the Concierge lounge!

While I believe that this woman is probably telling the truth about the bed bugs, I have heard that these have also be reported in even the most upscale hotels. So there is no reason to believe that the Jewel is infested and it's RCCL's fault. I would imagine that if they did discover bed bugs in one of the cabins, they would have a professional come in to treat the area to prevent the bugs from spreading. It's just like the Norwalk type viruses-it can strike on any, ship anywhere.
