Afraid of Water?

I'm afraid of heights, but that didn't stop me from taking a cruise--twice. The only thing that bothered me was being in the atrium aboard the Carnival Fascination. I try to tune it all out and I had fun. I have to look inward on the steps. Looking towards the ocean when doing outside steps is not an option! Being afraid of water can be a little intimidating, but to tell the truth, half of the time you're on a cruise, you forget you are on a ship. There are so many indoor activities, the casino, the theatres, the cabin.....well there are indoor activities and most pools on the outside have a surrounding wall with windows, so you really don't feel right on water that much. The movement of the ship, now that might remind you of being on the water, or not.

I'm terrified of water... I almost drown when I was eight... I can't swim... but I love cruisng and being at the beach.

My mother came from Belgium to Canada with her family in 1948 on the Queen Mary, and was sick the whole way (and she can't swim)... we finally talked her into trying a cruise on the Seabourn Pride... she says the first day she was aware of the motion and a little nervous, but it passed quickly and she's been addicted to cruising ever since.

Thank you for your responses. My family is planning a cruise for my parents' 45th anniversary and this is the popular choice by everyone except me! I have never been on a cruise, my parents have and they loved it. I don't want to insist that we come up with another idea due to my fear of water, (I too almost drowned when I was about 8 years old), so maybe I face my fear? I'm also afraid of heights!

I am, also, very afraid of water. I'm like a lot of you with water and drowning. I also live in the panhandle of Texas and water is not common up here. But after our first cruise I'm hooked. It you don't look out a window, you would never know you were on the ocean. I now love to look at the ocean. The last cruise we got a JS and now I'm hooked on a balcony. It is amazing to look out and marvel at God's wonder! I can't swim, but I have taken up snorkling. I'm ok with the mask and fins as long as the waves aren't too high. I'm glad I did, because Stringray City made it all worth while. Go and enjoy. Think about all the things you will see and do. It is more than worth it.

I am afriad of dogs because I was attacked by three shepards. I can now pet some dogs that are well behaved but will not approach a new dog until I see someone else touch it. I talked with a doctor about it as a friend needed a guide dog (which are very well behaved). I learned to handle the fear by slowly doing things with and near the fear but not going into it right away.

My suggestion is start now. Go near a playground pool (10 feet away). Talk to people who are there for a little while then go home and say I did it. You may never swim again but you will lose a little of your fear and enjoy the sight of happy people. Take a picture of it. Go back a day or two later and repeat. Do it in small steps now.

As above you are surrounded by walls. You do not have to get off the ship at tender ports (best time for the spa). When you get off at ports go to the beach and see that the ship is on the ocean from a safe area. You will be amazed at it. Take a pic of a tree on the beach.

Fears can parallize us but the good news is that most fears can be lessen and some defeated. It does take time but you can still go on a cruise and enjoy areas that are not near the water. When your family table is chosen ask that the TA knows that your familywant a table in the middle of the room not by a window. Most of the larger tables are towards the middle anyway.
