Galveston fogged in again

Carnival uses Galveston for a very simple reason, access to a state with about 10% of the nation's total population and 3 of its 10 largest cities within 300 miles (easy driving for Texans). Fog? Yes, it happens with about the same frequency as other Gulf Ports, and usually burns off by late morning - and I understand the "mess" of the Jan. 8 departure, being involved in a shipboard wedding that morning. The cruise terminal could stand some enlarging, but 2 ships arriving - both late - and departing on the same day, will put the crunch on parking, generally easier and more convenient in Galveston than most ports. "La Migra" in its customs and immigration function? Shucks! We here in Texas get to see the minions of HSA in a lot less effective functionality mode than in Galveston. Other than folks without passports having a shorter line - Punish them for their effrontery! - our trip through was quick (but marred by a lost bag, a Carnival fable: "How my bag cruised again without me!", I'll save for another post.

Those of us who in our youth sat off the JAX sea buoy waiting for the tide to enter the carrier basin understand delay. Room for a 180 degree turn. Until you've seen the Mayport tugs spinning a big CVA, you ain't seen close quarters....

After reading the posts about fog I am a little concerned about my 2/27 cruise. I will be driving in with my 78yr old mom. It is a 3 hour drive from her house to the pier. I have no internet access at her home. I don't want to leave and be stuck in Galveston because of the fog. Is there a number I can call in the morning to see if the Triumph will make it into port.

I have had nothing but delays at Florida ports, starting with Jacksonville with high tide , our ship couldn't get in under the bridge, to hurricanes and storms at other Florida ports. No Thanks ,I'm staying away from Florida ports.
In 13 cruises I have NEVER had a delay or a problem with a FL port including Tampa, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and Port Canaveral. Sounds like you are painting your picture with an awfully broad brush, my friend!

I have to agree with the previous poster. We have cruised 12 times out of Florida, Miami,Ft Lauderdale and Port Canaveral. We have never had a problem either. Always Jan Feb and 1 November. We have always left within a few minutes of our time. Beginning to worry about Galveston. We will see soon.

I'm glad somebody ressurrected this thread because I know someone was asking about docking. in Jamaica we docked starboard and in Cozumel we docked Port side. Again, I'm pretty sure that varies at any given point, but that's what we did. And if interested, we tendered from the port side in Grand Cayman as well.

As for the fog....it sucked!!! We loved the cruise, but really felt like we lost time. We didn't get on board until about 6:30 and it was quite interesting trying to explore the upper decks when you could barely see in front of you!!! It was like soup out there  Besides that, it was pretty much a cool day out since we sailed almost 12 hours late (would have been closer to the Caribbean during the day if we sailed on time) We kept hoping that we would be "fogged" out on the way back to steal a few extra hours on her, but the fog gods decided to be nicer to the next round of cruisers ;). Overall, it was a great trip. We really enjoyed the ship and we enjoyed Galveston as well. We may just not sail this time of year again!!! On the plus side, it's actually warmer right now in Chicago then it was for us on Sunday down in Galveston. Go figure!!! Mother Nature is a temperamental one isn't she!!

Hi All,

Can't get the Galveston webcam to load. Does anyone know if the Triumph docked on time today, 2-4-12? I'm driving my nephew and his wife to the port today and don't want to bring them early if boarding for today's departure will be delayed.

Thanks!

No, she did not. Sitting out in the Gulf waiting for the fog to lift! Sorry :(

I had started another thread about this. But no it does not looked docked to me. We can't see across the street from our hotel in Galveston.

Don't see the Triumph at the pier yet. I think Carnival would call you if there was a delay
