Need lots of help with post newark cruise stay in New York

Hello, any help is appreciated. Our cruise will depart in Newark on May 6th. We've never been to Newark or New York, but would like to spend an extra couple of days in NY since I've been wanting to go anyway. What would you suggest as the best way to get from the Newark port to NY. Also, what area would be the best for first timers to see a couple of sights? Any suggestons on a couple of must sees? I have points so we will need either a marriott or hilton brand hotel. We will fly out of JFK or LGA, what transportation would be best and far are they? Any idea about costs? Really excited about this, but totally lost.

What exact dates are you looking at? If you're doing the Summit, you'll be back on May 13, so how many nights?

 

The best way to get to NY from Bayonne would be to book a car service - Black Executives, Dial7, or Carmellimo. Probably in the $100+ range.

 

For sightseeing check out the hop on hop off buses - Grey Line has one, but there are others. They also offer multiday passes.

 

To JFK or LGA you can take a cab or book a car service. The cab fare to JFK is $45.50 fixed plus tolls if any and tip. A cab to LGA would be $30-35. If one airport is substantially cheaper than another, I'd go with that one.

 

If you have hotel points, start checking the Marriotts and Hiltons in NY to see what's available and whether you can use your points. Try to stay in midtown (20th-57th streets). Tourists seem to like Times Square, but it is very busy.

As 138 stated there are plenty of Hilton and Marriott brands in Manhattan. The fancier they are, the more expensive. Most first time tourists to Manhattan enjoy booking a Hop-Off Hop-On bus tour. (HoHo) This gives you some commentary and takes you past all the usual tourist spots. If you plan on visiting the Statue of Liberty or The World Trade Center site, you should get timed tickets in advance.

I would suggest he Marriott Courtyard - it's near Times Square, but just far enough away to avoid the noise. It's been remodeled and the location is great. We visited it a few months ago when our daughter and son-in-law stayed there. It's around 40th Street, off Sixth Avenue.

We get back on May 6th and are planning a couple of days. Hop on Hop off bus sounds like a great idea.

Start with your hotel first - see where you might be able to use your points and post back with your options. A "free" hotel in NY is a valuable commodity. You could really consider any property below 72nd St. Wherever you stay, you will always be going someplace else, so don't obsess on the location.

As the above posted said, don't obsess with location. There is SO MUCH to see in the city and no one place is going to be near everything you want to see/do. Buses/subway/cab are VERY easy to use and user friendly in NYC. Look for a good deal at a nice hotel, and go from there. Car service is probably the best/easiest way to get from Bayonne to the city. With luggage and all, bus/train is a real pain.
