CruiserBruce Posted February 4, 2012 #2 Share Posted February 4, 2012 For the Vatican, absolutely, IMHO. Not so much for the Colosseum. But still nice.
Cornishpastyman1 Posted February 4, 2012 #3 Share Posted February 4, 2012 Are tours a must? I'm not into those audio type tours. Thanks. Hi SM Didn't do the Vatican, just St Peter's Basilica where I found Rick Steves' podcast good enough to guide me around. But from all that I hear, and Bruce seems to confirm it, the Vatican is so comprehensive that a guide would be a must. For the Colosseum, I'd say no, you can again do fine with Steves' podcast, or if you prefer a decent guide book, but if you can get on a tour of the underground this includes a guide and he/she will be with you for the upstairs bit too , which goes up to the 3rd tier. All the best, Tony
hylasgirl Posted February 5, 2012 #4 Share Posted February 5, 2012 Are tours a must? I'm not into those audio type tours. Thanks. We done private tours with Romeinlimo that do both the Colosseum and the Vatican. There is certainly time to do both of those sites. I LOVE the Vatican museum! I could go there every single time I am in Rome. My husband, however, cannot:o I think a private tour into Rome is the greatest way to tour Rome when you only have a day. It's also easy to get others to share a tour for the day, making it less money that the ship tours. And FAR better! Enjoy!
kuldalai Posted February 5, 2012 #5 Share Posted February 5, 2012 The only way you will get into the spectacular Vatican Gardens is on an escorted tour . Two departures daily at 0930 and 1000 with numbers limited . Tour takes around 90 minutes and at the conclusion you are released back into the Vatican Museums (including Capella Sistina) without extra charge. You pre-book on line via either Vatican Museum website or Tickitaly website.
euro cruiser Posted February 5, 2012 #6 Share Posted February 5, 2012 You pre-book on line via either Vatican Museum website or Tickitaly website. Note that Tickitaly adds a 6,50 Euro "handling fee" for doing nothing but providing the exact same service the Vatican provides.
