My Sun Princess review posted

Recommended Posts

Posted quick review of our Sun Princess two nighter as soon as we got home yesterday. Enjoyed it enough to book Fijian Jewels for my 50th next March.

BB balcony was nice but small. Felt the motion quite a bit all of the second night. Knew we were coming through the heads by the lack of rocking and rolling.

Lovely crew, great room attendant Romlan.

Ship spotless but it has an aura of 'old'. Hard to define why we got that impression. The colour scheme? The carpets? The furniture?

Food good in the main dining room (Marquis, table 30 against the window in far port (??) corner, perfect). Lunch and brekkie in Horizon ok but can imagine how crowded it would get on a full cruise. Odd there is no outdoor area to eat without going downstairs. Possibly deck outside will be set up differently for a longer cruise?

Very obvious many were on board to do nothing but drink for two days, and they did. The results were in the forward stairwell on the morning of the second day (after the night before).

The English themed show on the second night was very good. Great costumes and set, good songs, good dancing. Didn't much care for the male singer but others might have liked him a lot. They did especially well considering how much the ship was moving.

Not really any comparison with any of our four previous cruises, all four previous ships were better, but then neither of us expected Sun to be as good.

Don't get me wrong, the ship was nice. We enjoyed our two nights and are looking forward to 11 next year. BUT, if anyone other than Princess or P&O were sailing out of Brisbane next March, I'd be considering them first.

I have to agree with you totally. We enjoyed our two day cruise on her which was our first cruise on her in 2011, as she is the best of the three (Pacific Dawn, Pacific Sun and Sun Princess) sailing out of Brisbane.

There is a lot better out there, just a shame they don't cruise out of Brisbane. So if I had a choice of the three I would choose Sun Princess again.

I couldn't believe the price of the drinks! The "specials" were $10.95! And yet I saw so many people buying multiple rounds of drinks at the pool, I wonder if they had heart attacks when they got the bill?

It was a nice little getaway. The ship was nice, a big improvement over the Pacific Star which was the last ex-Brisbane cruise we took but not even close to the Coral Princess from last year!

There was a nice variety of activities for the full sea day. Something for everyone-trivia, dance classes, horse racing, Bingo, pool games, etc........

There is no reason why they shouldn't have Anytime Dining. We were in the Regency DR at a table for 4 with a nice couple, it worked out OK for a short cruise but for a long cruise with port days it would be too constraining. I wouldn't choose a ship with no Anytime Dining for a future cruise.

FCCs are easy to purchase, we got USD ones since I had booked on Princess USA. You can choose which currency you want to use. My Captain's Circle has already been upgraded to Platinum!

You can get cash withdrawals at the casino on your shipboard account with no surcharge. I did play one pokie only because it had macaws and hibiscus flowers on it but gave up when I had lost $5.

The comedian wasn't very funny. We loved the British Invasion show!

There was no popcorn service during the 9:45 pm showing of The Artist, no one even came around offering drinks or blankets or anything. The buffet main courses were good but not much variety in desserts. I was able to bring some cookies off in Sydney. I declared them and Customs was just worried about fruits and veggies.

My husband got nice attention for his birthday, balloons on the stateroom door, card from the crew, card signed by the captain at dinner and the small cake.

I was wondering why Princess had to dock at Barangaroo and that other ship "The World" was docked at Circular Quay? I never heard of that ship, where is it from? I wish we had docked there, it would have been much more convenient. We spent a nice day at Taronga Zoo, then flew back that afternoon to Brissie.

I'm glad you enjoyed your cruise.

The OPT at Circular Quay might have been more convenient for you when you were planning to do some sightseeing before flying home, but most people don't do this after their cruise (unless they are staying in a hotel). I would much rather embark at the tent at Barangaroo rather than the OPT at Circular Quay. It is a nightmare and can't cope with the numbers on present-day cruise ships. Princess and P&O seem to go to Barangaroo whenever they can and it works well.

The World is a residential cruiseship and very expensive.

THE WORLD is effectively a floating Apartment Block . You purchase your Apartment and the vessel keeps sailing around the world. When you tire of living full time at sea you on-sell your apartment to a new owner .

Just like buying and selling residential property on land, its just that it floats and your Body Corportae fees are stratospheric to cover the travel, food and maintenance .

You can also let them if you want to spend some time on shore.

Plus it's not really a very attractive ship! Quite ugly in fact!

forgot about the birthday balloons and stuff!

thrilled to come back to the cabin and find the balloons and a sign on the door plus a card inside. then the song and cake at dinner - was lovely

The World - a friend of ours has just bought an apt. They were hoping to back in Sydney on Saturday to put some of their own stuff onboard and we were going to go on and have a look around but they couldn't get back.

Maybe next time :)

The World was supposed to arrive before us but wasn't there when we sailed under the bridge. Anyone know what time it arrived?

Tikibird, which comedian did you have? We had one towards the end of our NZ cruise who was not very good. The earlier comedians were great, though.

Hi Sandy,

The Comedian was a skinny guy with a shaved head, dont recall his name, he played an electric guitar that kept playing when he took his hands off the strings, lol.

Thanks Yatchet. No, not the same one. We had a guy taking off Rod Stewart - he was pathetic. Bet he won't be asked back.

Hi Sandy, Think you might be wrong about the Rod Stewart Comedian not being asked back. I think he has been already as he was on the Cherry Blossom Cruise Sept last year. He was dreadful and heaps of people walked out!!!! I actually felt sorry for him and embarrassed.

Hi Anjo. Not so much sarcastic, as truthful. You are right in saying that he has been asked back. :) If he was on your Cherry Blossom cruise, he was asked back to be on our NZ cruise! Unfortunately, he was not good - he appeared to be drunk, but maybe that was part of his act. Nobody we talked to liked his show - I don't know how many went to his second show. Sadly, for him, he was immediately followed by an excellent impressionist.

THE WORLD looks to be smaller than the Princess Ships and probably could easily fit under the bridge to dock at Barangaroo. Perhaps it is the class of the clientiele of the "part owners" of THE WORLD that gives it preference to dock at OPT!!!

It is smaller John. I've seen it at Portside, a couple of years ago, next to the Pacific Dawn, so it easily fits under the Gateway Bridge. :)

We saw him on a couple of Princess cruises last year. I felt his singing wasn't too bad and that he should have sung more and talked less. :D

Once when the World docked at Circular Quay ,

the Captain had to alternate the berthing

so that all the owners got an equal chance

to see the Opera House

from side of the ship their suite was on .:D:D

Kiwi Cruiser

You have said it all.

Wow , I have seen him many times and found him to be one of the best entertainers, some years back he fell out with P&O over womanising, great to see him back, pity about his act not being up to it !!

Yes, it's sad. Hopefully, it's a temporary glitch. As Aus T said, his singing was OK.

Morgan Kent was on as cruise staff on one of our cruises years ago (Sky I think) and he was a sleaze - tried to chat up one of my daughters. She found it quite yukky and all he did was make a fool of himself. I can see where he might have had troubles with P & O we complained
