Live From the Carnival Valor... Again

Still enjoying the review, with your usual dose of humor! We've done Stingray City twice and loved it as well!

Just to let you know, I was looking at the Breeze today and the 8 day suddenly popped back up! Interiors and Balconies are supposedly available. However if I go to fake book it, no matter how many people I plug in, it tells me there are no cabins avaialable for the requested # of passengers:confused::confused: Just a heads up in case you wanted to contact your person there and see if something actually IS available;):)

Keep enjoying your cruise!!

KIDS

It’s been a little hard to gauge what the kids think of the cruise. For example, we have two six year old girls in the “crew”. They have almost been connected at the hip since the cruise started. (It’s really good to see the cousins connecting so well even though they live in different parts of the country.) When I asked one what she liked best about the cruise she said “Camp Carnival”. But when I asked the other what she thought about Camp Carnival she said, “booorinnnng”.

So I suspect that’s the way for almost all kids… it depends on the kid. Our “crew” has four 16 year olds (two girls and two boys); one 14 year old boy, one eleven year old girl, two 10 year old boys, the two 6 year old girls and one 4 year old boy. (There’s also one 19 year old but I’m not including him for now, because he’s mostly an adult.)To some greater or lesser extent, they have all the kids have gone to the Camp Carnival activities.

The oldest bunch has been kind of mute on the O2 club (Camp Carnival for teens). There seems to be some agreement that the kids that age who are on board have really never mingled. I’m kind of surprised at that but maybe it’s more my group than the O2 club itself… “my” teens had a “built in” group as they boarded… they have each other to “hang” with. These four kids have always gotten along well when they get together and this is their second “Camp Grandma”.

When I ask the four if they are having fun, they always say, “yes”. And I think they really are. But I’m not sure if they are saying that just for me... maybe they would rather be hanging out with their friends back home at the “ole swimming hole”.

The “middle five” seem to be having a lot of fun. When I ask them what they like best they all have different answers… the pool… the arcade… Camp Carnival… and the most answered, “I dunno”. And one of the boys especially liked the arcade… he won a Kindle Fire at one of the games.

For those who haven’t been here before, the arcade is a pay extra activity. All of the parents have given their kids $20 or so to go play in there. There are a bunch of the usual arcade games and a couple of “games” where they can win prizes. The “prize games” are really gambling for kids. There are equivalent adult games in the casino where you can win $$$ along with the prizes.

When a kid wins a prize an empty box falls into the tray. They have to go to the casino cashiers cage to pick up the real thing. And to claim the prize they have to have an adult with them. So for Billy (not his real name) I went to the casino with him. The people working in the casino cashiers cage looked quite surprised that he was there to claim a prize… so as you probably imagine, it’s very rare for anyone to win this stuff. Billy was really beaming. He has told the story several times and his eyes have a twinkle every time he tells it. And he won it with only about $15 invested. Of course I’m sure he has spent the rest of his money trying to win something else, but in the end he is still ahead… and how many of the casino players can say that.

One of the things they had a couple of nights ago was an extended Camp Carnival event called “Night Owls”. Camp Carnival normally closes at 10:00 PM. (“Pay for” Babysitting is offered after that for about $6.50/hr) But on this night they offered an extended program with activities till midnight for $15 per kid. This is for the 2-11 year olds and they combine all these ages. All of our “crew” that age were enrolled. I suspect that this is more for the adults than the kids because every kid reported back that they did not like it much… including the kids that otherwise like Camp Carnival.

The youngest (I’ll call him John) loves Camp Carnival. This morning (by the way, it’s morning of Day 4) when everyone headed for breakfast he said, “I not hungry… I wanna go Camp Carnival”. Today his parents are going to explore Jamaica on their own… without kids… so they checked him in to Camp Carnival for the day. He was really “beaming” and he was happy they had left him there.

There are two consensus things that every kid has agreed on. First, everyone liked Stingray City. When we got back to the boat yesterday afternoon we gathered on the Lido deck for a late lunch. All of the kids were all jabbering about stingray stuff and telling the tale about what they did with a stingray.

The second thing that all the kids agree on is the “free flowing” ice cream. The parents have allowed a “liberal” ice cream policy. Since there is soft serve ice cream available 24 hours a day, each kid has probably eaten a few gallons of it. (A couple of adults too.)

One other thing I have noticed is with the group that’s age 10-14 . Although their parents are not letting them run wild, they have a certain amount of freedom to come and to as they wish on the ship. They can check themselves into and out of Camp Carnival. They can go to the pool, the hot tubs, the water slide, the mini-golf course or ??? whenever they want to. I think they like this a lot.

I asked one of the eleven year olds what he liked best about the cruise and he said, “spending time with the family”. I’m sure his parents coached him well. Then I asked him what he liked second best. He pondered for a minute and said all the free sodas he wanted. His parents had bought him a soda card… all the kids have one. This seems to be one of the best values. For about thirty something dollars, the kids can get all the sodas they want for all six days… anytime they want, and anywhere they want. I think the kids like ordering on their own part as much as anything else.

The 14 year old seems to be having fun too. I don’t know this for sure. I have barely seen him during the cruise, so I’m guessing he’s off having the time of his life.

Geoffrey (not his real name either) is the 19 year old. So he is in one of those in between being a kid and an adult. As far as I’m concerned, someone 19 is old enough to serve in the military… and die in some terrible place is an adult. But here on the cruise ship Geoffrey is kind of in limbo. Yesterday, like everyone he really liked swimming with the stingrays. But other than that I have not seen much of him either. But more than that Geoffrey is a real low key guy so it’s hard to tell. The only time there was a sure sign he was enjoying this was when I mentioned that I was trying to book the Breeze for my next cruise… I said that so far I was booking the cabin for just myself. Then he perked up and wanted to know more about the cruise. He’ll be back in college then, but the interest he showed is a good indication that he is having a good time.

One other thing I tried to do was to ask all the kids to write me a paragraph or two about what they thought about the cruise so far. OHHHHH NOOOOO. They all acted like I was punishing them for something… like I was making them stay after school to write an essay. And you should have heard the excuses… “I don’t have any paper”… “I don’t feel well cause it’s that time of the month”… “my mom wants me to go to the thing with her”. But the best one was, “a stingray bit my finger and I can’t write”… stingrays don’t bite. Anyway… I think I’ve given up on this idea.

The bottom line… I think the kids of all ages (including me) have been enjoying the cruise. Like everything in this world there are some high-lights, and some low-lights. But even leaving aside the politically correct answers most of them give, I think they are having quite an adventure. When they get back home and talk with their friends about what they did this summer, most of their friends will say, “awww nuttin’. But these kids will have great and glorious tales to tell their friends. (Me too.)

My wife and I were on the Valor in December of 2011. Was the guitar player you describe in the atrium (and sometimes casino bar) named Robert? Short, slightly stocky guy?

If it is, he's a great guy. My wife and I got to be friends with him. She requested Midnight Rider once early in the cruise. He proceeded to play it every time he saw us. I requested some James Taylor (which I like and my wife hates), and he bothered her and entertained me by playing that whenever he saw us, too.

If it is Robert, tell him James Taylor and Midnight Rider from December say hello. I'd be curious if he has a web site or something similar.

Enjoy the cruise.

Before I get to Day 1, I have a few things to catch up on from last night. Just sort of a Day 0 wrap up. (Besides I get to have all of you singing "Day-yay-yay-0" again.:D)

There was entertainment hopping all over ship. That’s usual for carnival, but last night seemed to be a bit better than usual. There was a guy singing & playing the guitar in the atrium that was very good. There’s really nothing unusual about some entertainment in the atrium, but it’s usually some kind of chamber music… you know, stuff for seven really old people that go to bed about seven-thirty. But last night was different. He played all kinds of music... everything from new stuff (that I didn’t recognize) all the way back to oldies (that I won’t admit to recognizing.) And there was a pretty good crowd. I’ll get the persons name and find out how long he will be on the ship.

Sgt. Schultz asked about the Piano Bar. Brad Alexander, one of Carnival’s premier piano bar entertainers, is here for this cruise. Last week was supposed to be the end for him. A couple of months ago when I found out that he was leaving just as we were getting on I threw myself down on the floor and started kicking and screaming. This would have been the third time that kind of thing would have happened to me. So… I sent Brad an email “begging” him to extend one more week. I had all 22 of those traveling with me looking forward to having a good time in the piano bar. To my surprise he was able to extend and I don’t have to commit hari-kari.

So that’s good news for me… but I have some not so good news for those getting ready to get on. This is indeed Brad’s last sailing on the Valor and the guy coming on next week is a new-bie. So starting next week it’s pot-luck in the piano bar.

By the way… I was so tired after “herding cats” all day, I only made it till about 11:00 PM in the piano bar last night. We’ll see about tonight.

I’ll be loosing my internet connection soon, so I’ll close this post and write about the day in Key West in my next post.

A Rant

When I started writing these “live froms” I swore that I would tell the good, the bad, and the ugly wherever I found it. So far this cruise I haven’t talked about the service in the main dining room. But tonight put me over the edge. Each night it has taken a long time to get our food. It has been degenerating each night.

Last night we didn’t get our main course until the waiters were ready to start dancing on the tables. But tonight it was even later than that. We’re at the late (8:15) seating. One of my daughters put her kids in Camp Carnival tonight to have a dinner with just the adults. But, as 10 PM approached we were just being served our main course. Camp Carnival “closes” at 10 PM… or starts charging babysitting fees.

Now maybe it’s our fault for eating at the late seating, but there should be plenty of time to eat, have desert and get to Camp Carnival to pick up kids before they turn into pumpkins. But tonight there was no time for desert nor to sit and chat a bit after dinner. It was woof down the main course and that was it.

I can’t tell if it is the kitchen that is causing the problems or if it’s the waiters. I would have said something to the Matre Dee, but he hasn’t been around at all this cruise… so tomorrow night if we are running late I’ll find him.

OK… back to the fun cruise stuff.

Linda (irishlinny)… thanks for the tip. As soon as I got the tip I sent an email off to my girlfriend (really my PVP). We’ll see what she has to say. I did check on board here and the person I talked to knew it was sold out without even looking. She said that she had checked again earlier in the afternoon. So it’s not looking good for me.

For the rest of this post I’m going to just pass on a few tid-bits… then I’m going to go do crusin’ stuff.

In the past, I have complained loudly about the internet service here on the Valor. Now I know it is not going to be like a land based high speed link, and I accept that. But on a couple of cruises I dedicated a “rant” to just this subject. Well, that’s a thing of the past… at least for now. This cruise the internet has been acceptable. I also think they lowered the price since the last time I was here. By the way, I’m using the same laptop that I had the problems with in the past.

I forgot to mention that during the Stingray City tour they take pictures of folks with the stingrays. You get six or eight pictures of you with the “rays”. They also put a load of pictures they have taken previously… or taken off the internet. For this they charge $40. Not a very good deal. You can get them down some, but you’ll end up better off if you bring a waterproof camera with you… even if you buy one on the ship.

I went by the “Winstons lounge”. This used to be the cigar bar. This is one of the most comfortable lounges on the ship. When it was still a cigar bar there was usually some kind of light entertainment after dinner. It used to be a nice place to go hang out for a little while… and maybe have an after dinner glass of desert wine. And I haven’t smoked since 2008, but it was well ventilated and a pleasant even for an ex-smoker. Now, however, all smoking is banned in there… and the place was like a morgue. This lounge is now almost totally going to waste… what a shame.

That’s all for now… in my next post I’ll tell you about the day in Jamaica…

Thats a shame about the MDR. When I sailed the Valor last year there seemed to be discrepancies in the service then as well. There were several of us from the Roll Call who had Late Seating and I recall one family having similar complaints/experience as you are having; however, I was in the same dining room, same time but in a different section and I RAVED about the service....in fact it was one of the BEST MDR experiences I have had with the exception of my first cruise. I am sorry to hear that your adult family night was cut short.

Glad to hear that the internet is better! Yes....I noticed that the prices were much less than last year also.

Hope you all have a great day in Jamaica :D

Day 4 - Jamaica Mon

As I write this we are just sailing away from Ocho Rios, Jamaica. I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews about Jamaica… some people hate it, and some people love it. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of in-between. This is my fifth time here so I guess I’m in the love it group.

I can’t exactly tell you what it is that I like about Jamaica. I like the people for sure. Ok, there a lot of people who are hustling you for a buck… or two… or twenty. But these people are just trying to make a living the best they can. And once you get past the “hustle” I think these are really friendly people. They always have a smile on their face and an easy going outlook on life.

The next time you’re here, look beyond the “hustle” and see if you can see the person behind that. Look at the way they interact with each other... most of the time you will see them laughing and having a good time. And buy a few of the “coffee bean necklaces”... they’re only a buck a piece. By the time you get back to the ship you should have several around your neck… and you can certainly afford at least one. You will have an inexpensive souvenir to tell stories about, and more importantly you will have helped someone feed their family. (I sure hope they are not all driving a Lexus. But if they are… oh well… I’m still wearing the ones I bought to Elegant Night tonight.

I had not “scheduled” anything for today… it was a free day. A day for everyone to go and do… or not do… anything they wanted to. What that meant for me was that I planned to sleep in. Since this is my third trip to Ocho Rios, my plan was to just do a “walk-about” and then go to Margaritaville for a frozen concoction to help me hang on.

It just occurred to me that ya’ll must think I’m some kind of a drunk… always talking about Margaritaville and booze. Nothing is farther from the truth. I rarely drink any kind of alcohol. And no… I’m not trying to make up for lost time while I’m on a cruise. But I do tend to “enjoy life” a bit more while cruising. But isn’t that what a cruise is all about… “enjoying life” a bit. And so I do tend to “enjoy” a drink… or two… or three while I’m on a cruise. But never to the point where I’ve ever regretted even in the least bit. My only regret is that I didn’t figure out how to “enjoy life” a bit sooner.

Anyway… today I slepted in until about 9:30 this morning. Then I went up to the Lido Deck for a leisurely breakfast and morning coffee. There were few people this morning so it was kind of quiet for the first time this cruise. After about an hour of just chillin’ on the Lido, I headed out for my walk-about.

The town of Ocho Rios is right at the end of the pier. After the walk down the pier you go through a compound area and you’re in beautiful “downtown Ocho Rios.” I had never done a full “walk-about” here before so when I got to the main street and turned left along the coast-line.

There a lot of what I call “tourist compounds” along the way. These are sort of “mini-malls” Jamaican style. They are all finced and all have controlled access through a central entrance way. They also have some kind of security that is mainly there to keep out the hustlers. (Margaritaville is in one of these “tourist compounds” on the right hand side just as you are leaving the port area.)

In the direction I was going there’s a public beach about ¼ mile from the port area. This is another compound type area and the entrance is guarded. It costs $200 for adults, and $100 for children… that’s Jamaican dollars… or about $3 US for adults. --> hold that thought…

Just now the 11 year old girl in my “crew” came up to me with a couple of other girls (that I don’t know) and said can you sign for something on this list. They were on a scavenger hunt. I signed for one item… someone in a blue bathing suit… and off they went. As they left I asked then if they were having fun and all of them squealed a resounding YeeeeeSSSSSS!!!

Ok… back to the walk-about. The beach area has all kinds of pay for stuff like wave-runners, paddle boards and the like. It looks like this might be a good place to spend a beach day, but I didn’t go in.

I walked on down the road a bit more… maybe a mile. All along the way was the same sort of thing. By the time I got back I had been offered 327 taxi rides… lots of stuff to shoot, snort, or rub into my belly button… tours of every conceivable type of attraction within five to a hundred miles of Ocho Rios; anything I wanted to see… hot and cold running women of all sizes and shapes; young or “mature”; slim or “full woman”; black, white, brown, yellow or any color I might consider… cheap booze around every corner… and least I forget to mention, bushels of the main crop of Jamaica, “vitamin G”. No matter what else each “vendor” had to offer, every one had vitamin G. Of course I took each and everyone up on all they offered. Now you know why I like Jamaica so much.

Oh and there’s one new one that seems to be offered; ******. (With 5 kids you can figure out how much I need that last one.) So that is one I did not take them up on.

OK… I didn’t take the “vendors” up anything they were offering. Some of them would walk along with me for a ways, and I would just chat with them about Jamaica. They were mostly friendly but I’m sure they were just trying to find out if they could find something I would go for.

One thing I found interesting… as one of the “vendors” would walk along with me, we would come upon an outright beggar with their hand out. The “vendor” would treat them with distain and move them out of the way. It looked like there might be some kind of class system in Jamaica that I’m not aware of. I’ll have to ask “Uncle Google” when I’m back to high speed internet.

Some of the “vendors” seemed to be a lot more aggressive in approaching you than the last times I’ve visited. I never felt physically threatened; they were just a bit more persistent or vocal in approaching me. In all cases, with a firm “no thank you” they would wish me a nice day and not approach me any more.

There were several hotels and a number of the “tourist compounds” along the way. I didn’t go into any of the hotels to check them out but they seem to range from “moderate” looking to the opulent. The “tourist compounds” were more of the same thing I saw closer to the port. I suspect the prices get better the farther you get from the port, but I don’t know for sure because I wasn’t carefully price shopping… I wasn’t going to buy anything unless they had just the right hot and cold running woman… they didn’t.

I ended my “walk-about” with a visit to Margaritaville. I expected to see most of the “crew” there, but to my surprise, none were there. That’s a clear violation of “cruise law” and I suspect that they are now all in cruise jail. So I had the requisite frozen concoction to help me hang on, and a Cheeseburger in Paradise… bought the required t-shirt (I don’t want to end up in cruise jail), and went back to the ship.

All in all, a nice leisurely day.

Hummm... Cruise Critic seems to block some brand names. In the previous post there was the paragraph like this.

Oh and there’s one new one that seems to be offered; ******. (With 5 kids you can figure out how much I need that last one.) So that is one I did not take them up on.

The ****** was substituted by Cruise Critic. The ****** was the brand name... so let's just call this "vitamin V" and I'll let you go from there.

Day 5 – Sea Day

Good morning all. It’s the last sea day morning. I’m coming to you once again from the Lido deck by the main pool. It’s kind of early… for me 8:30 is early for a sea day... and I’m here just sipping on my first cup of coffee. The place is mostly deserted… deserted that is except for all the chair hog stuff keeping me company. I don’t know how they do it. They must have little robots that come out early in the morning when no one is looking and set up all the flip-flops, paperbacks, towels and other crapola to hold the deck chairs. No one would get up that early… set up their stuff… and then go back to bed… would they???. In any case, I’ll post a few pictures of them when the hogs show up to take over the chair holding down duty.

I need to fill you in a bit more on the stop in Jamaica. The public beach I talked about is called “Paradise Beach”. Two of the families in my “crew” went there. One family paid for just the general admission ($3 per person) and the other paid for the “all inclusive” for $50 per person. Everybody was raving the place at about it at dinner last night. (It’s the beach you see from the ship parked at the main dock.) The “all inclusive” included beach chairs, all the booze you can drink, and all the food you can eat. Everyone raved about how good the jerk chicken was. (The “all inclusive” crew smuggled some to the standard admission crew.)

They also rented wave runners for a reasonable $45 (US) for ½ hour. That was enough time for everyone to get some riding time around the cove near where the ship was docked. Also, everyone went swimming (duh… it is the beach) and talked about how nice the water was. They even had some small stingrays come “swim with them”. It might be a good place to snorkel if you have your own snorkel gear.

Every single one of the “crew” had a story to tell about their day in Ocho Rios. Most of the stories centered around the “hustlers” and all the stuff they were trying to sell… and/or rent… and/or show you. Listening to everyone jabber at dinner time, I know that everyone had a good day. That really put a smile on my face.

Last night I went to the main show. This was the second main show I’ve gone to on this cruise. The first one was on the evening of day 1. (Remember for me I call the sail away day, “Day 0”… Gotcha singing Day-0, Day-yay-yay-0 again didn’t I? At least I hope I did.)

Anyway… the show on day 1 was a magic show. I had seen the show when I was here on the Valor back in January and it was good then. This time it was maybe even better. The guy doing the magic is actually half magician (a good one) and a half comedian (a good one too). His comedy is mostly improve with people he picks from the audience so it was almost like a completely new show since January. I really enjoyed it both times so those of you getting ready to sail on the Valor will probably really like this show.

That reminds me… there was a question about the Guitar player I mentioned on day 1. His name is Chris, and got on recently so it’s not the same one asked about. I don’t have any more details.

It’s rare that I go to two shows on one cruise. I usually spend my evenings in the piano bar if the person is good. But last night I was walking by the Ivanhoe theater (the main theater) and the music coming from there that caught my attention. So I stepped in for a “peak”. Shizam!!! These folks were good.

It was a 1980s “ish” singing & dancing music review. This was the first time I saw the Valor dancers. The female dancers were very talented… they could dance well to. I’m not normally an 80s music kind of guy, but from the minute I got there they had me “foot tappin’ and chair dancin’ ”. This was one of the best production shows I’ve seen on a cruise in quite some time. This includes NCL, Royal Caribbean, and other Carnival cruises. This is certainly a show I recommend.

I mention the “talented” dancers. Those that know me or have followed my cruises know what I mean by “talented”. It reminds me that it’s time for a “word from our sponsors”. (Least I get in trouble with the Cruise Critic “police” I should say that these are not really sponsors in any way… I just say that to try and be cute.) But I do often take time when writing to get up on my soap box and talk about something serious… near and dear to my heart.

I got flamed for this a little bit the last time out, so to be clear, I support “Save the Tatas” and “Save Second Base” which are breast cancer awareness organizations. And more than that… please support all cancer research. Cancer takes our loved ones away every day and it’s time we “killed this killer”. Take it seriously… the “talent” you save may be your own.

Thanks for your support and now back to your regularly scheduled babbling.

I got down off my soap box, did my usual morning walk/run on the sports deck and then and went down the main dining room for breakfast. I have breakfast there on the last sea day almost every cruise. When I got back to the Lido deck it was nearly 10 AM. Most of the deck chairs were still being held down by towels, flip flops and the like.

Then suddenly it seemed like almost the entire “Hog family” popped up out of the cracks in the deck. There must be a chair hog alarm clock that goes off on the ship that you have to get the secret code for. I got some pictures of the “hog Family, so I’ll be posting that via twitter @KokomoMan.

I like it when the last day of the cruise is a sea day. (Sometimes when a ship docks in the Bahamas, that’s the last day and then the ship just overnights back to Florida.) Having the full sea day is just a good time to “chill”. I don’t have to rush to get packed or anything like that. But it’s also a day a lot of folks try to cram in as much more cruisin’ stuff as they can… that includes me. But I’m a bit melancholy about it too… it signifies that the cruise is coming to an end. This cruise it seems a bit more so because it was only a six day cruise instead of my usual seven days.

So with that I’ll get this posted and start getting some of the crusin’ stuff done before it’s over. I’ll post more this evening.

I laughed so hard, I was crying. I couldn't stop laughing when I was reading this to my husband. Love your review! We'll be on Valor September 1.

OK Bob I HATE you... sort of...

I've been avoiding Twitter like the plague and because I just had to see your photos, I finally signed up. Under protest.

But I have to say, your pics made it almost worthwhile! They were great!

Ditto that...I finally caved as well:p

Fun pics, Bob! The lady in the thong suit...is she not aware that Carnival has kids on board? We had 2 women over 400 lbs wear bikinis on our Freedom cruise:eek: (I can complain because I am ample in size). While it was really a sight, at least they were covered....I think.

Still rooting for you to get on the Breeze...I want to sing Day-O with you (my parents used to sing that when I was young...LOL!)
