GrandCanyon2005 Posted August 15, 2012 #1 Share Posted August 15, 2012 Do the flightseeing tours (and Glacier Landing) fly out by Princess Lodge, or does everyone go to Talkeetna. Thus far, we are most impressed with Talkeetna Air, but didn't want to do that if I could stay at Denali and do it from there. Thoughts?

Five years ago (and I don't think it has changed) the flights were all out of Talkeetna. We can highly recommend the summit flight with K2. It was breathtaking. GrandCanyon2005 Posted August 17, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted August 17, 2012 Are there any flightseeing tours in Denali ... or does everyone have to drive to Talkeetna? If we have to drive, what is the drive time?
mapleleaves Posted August 17, 2012 #4 Share Posted August 17, 2012 I think I've given you the Denali Chamber of Commerce link before, for lodging info but here ya go. There is flightseeing out of Denali but Talkeetna is actually closer to the mountain. It's a 2 1/2 hr drive. Talkeetna is the halfway point between Anchorage and Denali which is another reason people stop there. If the flight is weathered out on the way up, you can try again on the way back. http://www.alaskaone.com/_dcc/activities/ Consider borrowing a few Alaska travel books from your library. They would give you a better sense of where the destinations are, activities, etc and access to maps. This link will help with drive times. Actually there's lots of helpful info in that site. Look at Top Day Tours for Magnificent Drives, or at Destinations. http://alaska.org/gettingaround/alaska-transportation-guide.htm
frugaltravel Posted August 17, 2012 #5 Share Posted August 17, 2012 There are at least four airstrips near Denali NP - well within easy driving distance and/or inside the park. But most people flightsee from Talkeetna. Cheaper and easier plus at Denali a key is to get on a bus and gst inside the park.
vbmom87 Posted August 17, 2012 #6 Share Posted August 17, 2012 Perhaps this site would be helpful in your planning: "The majority of flightseeing companies, including both fixed wing and helicopter operations, are based in the communities immediately surrounding the park such as Talkeetna, Denali Park, Healy, and Kantishna." http://www.nps.gov/dena/planyourvisit/flightseeing.htm[/url Here is a company out of Healy (20 minutes North of Denali) http://www.touchofwildernessbb.com/activities/flight-see-tours.htm One more resource for you to check out: http://planitalaska.com/denali/what-to-see-and-do/flightseeing-tours.html
greatam Posted August 17, 2012 #7 Share Posted August 17, 2012 Are there any flightseeing tours in Denali ... or does everyone have to drive to Talkeetna? If we have to drive, what is the drive time? As I posted in the Kantishna thread, the most spectacular flight in Denali that is NOT a summit flight is with Kantishna Air OUT of Kantishna. DIRECT into the North Face of Denali-it really gives you a perspective how massive that mountain is. The ONLY way you can see that angle is out of Kantishna. Only planes that have oxygen fly OVER the summit and most of those are out of Talkeetna. But Kantishna Air also flies out of the airport in Denali (behind the train station) and offers two or three flightseeing tours. http://www.katair.com/
