katyf Posted October 19, 2012 #1 Share Posted October 19, 2012 Over the pool? Just read a review saying it did. If so, what pool is it over? Considering a feb cruise out of no, and being able to swim on the cold days would be great!
BND Posted October 19, 2012 #2 Share Posted October 19, 2012 No retractable roof. The open roof that looks like it should be retractable is over the solarium. On some ships (Enchantment, Grandeur) the retractable roof is over the solarium. Otherwise, there is no covered pool on the EX. We've sat out there on EX when it was raining under the covered areas(there are sides and each end of the pool, but everyone under the "roof" got wet. cb at sea Posted October 19, 2012 #3 Share Posted October 19, 2012 All of the pools are "open-air"....not great on a colder cruise, but really nice in the summer! That was something I didn't enjoy on Radiance Class...the adult pool is enclosed, so no sunning or tanning is possible in the relative peace of the adult area. Very discouraging. I'm one of those folks who doesn't swim just to swim....I get in the pool because it's hot! For me, a pool is for cooling off!
ERIE 13 Posted October 19, 2012 #4 Share Posted October 19, 2012 I which it did have a cover. The new sunshine ship that will hopefully arrive in 2014 does have an enclosed pool area.
awboater Posted October 19, 2012 #5 Share Posted October 19, 2012 No roof. We were on the Explorer a few weeks ago on a cruse to Bermuda. Not very many people went into the pools as they were pretty cold.
sharonlacey Posted October 19, 2012 #6 Share Posted October 19, 2012 We love the Explorer and we usually go in March but after the last cruise (we lost 4 days due to cold weather) we decided to fly to FL. But will miss the convenience of NJ port:(
negc Posted October 20, 2012 #7 Share Posted October 20, 2012 At the present time only Vision and Radiance class ships have a retractable roof and a climate-controlled solarium. Despite one person's constant claim to the contrary, I would definitely recommend using sunscreen since I seriously doubt that the glass roof filters out the UV rays that cause sunburns and possibly skin cancers. On occasion we have seen the roof opened but usually the humidity in the outside air makes it more comfortable when the roof is open.

loubetti Posted October 20, 2012 #11 Share Posted October 20, 2012 Trivia question: What was the first cruise ship (of any line) to feature a "Magrodome" over the pool area. Magrodome is what these sliding roofs are called. No Googling allowed! ;)
