Time & Place Falmouth, Jamaica

I think we are going to bite the bullet and go during our December cruise.

Did you notice any fish/snorkeling or is it basically a sand bottomed beach?

I thought I read something about alot of sea urchins there...Is this correct?

We enjoy adventuresome excursions rather than the run of the mill cruise ship ones....I'm really looking forward to this. I'm a bit apprehensive about being hassled outside the port gates, but sure we'll manage.

We've been to Samana, Roatan, Dominica and Guatemala which we were warned about....Had the best time at all of those places!

Thanks

Barbara

I don't think you will be disappointed! The bottom was really just a sandy bottom. I didn't notice any fish where we swam. We didn't see any sea urchins, however Harvel did warn us to avoid the dark areas in the water because there could be sea urchins there. We had no problem avoiding the darker areas and didn't come across or see any. We weren't hassled that bad outside the gates. We just stuck to the route and didn't stop at any shops. A few people asked if they could tell us about their tours and Hubby just ignored them and kept walking and I politely said we are already meeting one and kept on. It's not nearly as bad as Nassau.

We visited this week. Pros: affordable, close to the port, not at all crowded, great water for very young children, food didn't cause any GI issues and tasted decent. Able to return to the ship whenever we wanted. Cons: the place was in a state of serious disrepair. Drink options limited to bottled water & beer. Although they had plenty of liquor I didn't see mixers or clean ice. Bar was self serve. I would probably go again, but this place isn't for everyone. If you are expecting a resort experience, find another excursion. If you want to feel like you are living a jimmy buffet song, you will be fine!

Thanks for your review. Can you please give me the following info. We have been there/done that everywhere in Jamaica and wanted to try something different since we'll have a sea day before and after our Jamaica stop....I understand about the rustic stuff and actually enjoy that type of thing.

1. Should I bother bringing snorkel?

2. Alot of sea urchins?

3. Were you bothered by locals "pushing/selling" stuff?

4. Did you use their pickup/takeback $20pp service or a taxi? If taxi, how did you handle that?

5. Although I know the chairs, beach, etc were "rustic", was the beach free of glass, garbage, etc?

Thanks so much

Barbara

I'm not sure about snorkeling, sorry. I forgot my stuff and didn't ask them if there was anything decent to see.

There were large shallow pools with nothing on the bottom. We were warned that there were sea urchins in the areas with sea grass so we stayed clear of that area.

Only one guy selling stuff and he wasn't approaching anyone. You could go up to his 'area' to look if you wanted.

We used their pick up service, it was a decent air conditioned van. We had a half hour from when the ship docked to get to the pickup point. We had to hustle to make it but we also had a 3 year old with us. If you have any mobility issues, a half hour might not be enough time, otherwise you should be able to make it.

I didn't notice glass or garbage on the beach.

We were at Time and Place last week.

I will probably not return again.

here are the pros and cons

Pros

Harvel and everyone we were in contact with were nice.

The property is generally clean

Owner seems to take pride in his property

Good food and drinks

Cons

#1-the beach is surrounded by grass and the clear areas that were approachable were small and ankle to knee deep it was not a good swimming beach or snorkeling.

I do not like the self serve idea-I like to know what I owe as I go-When we left we were accused of owing more-not a good experience-they found out we were all paid up.

Harvel was late-we signed up for the 10 am I called him after being 10 minutes late and he had us down for 11 am pick-up-he apologized-but was not a good start.

He had to make 2 trips for our group of 10-we were never told about this and again not a good start or finish.

We did see sea urchins-just not a nice swim beach.

That was a nice review Harry0.. I thought you'd do worse..lol

I was also there last week.

As Harry said he was late.

we had to walk maybe 6-7 blocks to bank for pickup.

He never showed and someone let us use his phone (another taxi guy).

At least 30-45 minute wait (and the time was confirmed the week before on ship/island time)

Had to have a few in one taxi and others in his as we were a party of 10.

10 minute drive to get there.

I wont knock it for what it is. We wanted to see Jamaica in a different way and we did.

I will say that I was expecting primitive and that is what it was, that is for sure.

I didnt have a problem with surroundings.

I did not eat the food as I dont do spicy, others did and said it was ok.

Beer was $3 for red stripe.

I bought 2 really nice carvings from Martin the guy on the side of the beach.

Nice guy, buy something and help him out.

The thing that annoys me is that the water was so low.

none of the reviews really state this.

18-24 inches at the most. If you went way out it it got waist high, but then grass.

We did no swimming, and there was no true cooling off.

Grass is everywhere except one small area. If you see pictures the dark area is grass.

The roped off area in this picture is all you can really 'swim' in. (clear and nice)

3 sea urchins came for a visit. little fish, saw a hermit crab

Dogs are sweet.

People were nice

Except you felt like a hostage at the end when they said things weren't paid up.

If you think all this is ok, and have a very open mind you will like it.

water good for little kids, but the nude beach next door might be an issue if they saw anything

Would I go back, no

Water height. the 2 guys are sitting/laying in the water

Wow...I just paid my deposit to go here...Still like the idea of doing so, but most concerned about:

-Saying that you weren't paid off or didn't pay the correct amount? How did this work? Did they question the number of drinks you had written on the sheet? Is anyone there to order directly from? I really would be uncomfortable being "held hostage" for this!

-Can one walk to another beach to swim in deeper water?

Wonder if their not showing up on time happens frequently? Have any other CC TNP reviewers encountered this?

I may just chalk up the $20 deposit and change my plans to just do the Falmouth port after reading these posts.

Saying we were held hostage is putting it strongly-but it was not comfortable-It was a mix up between Harvel and the owner-like I said after a few minutes it was worked out.

There were multiple people manning the bar at any given time. Everything was written down in a book. To be fair everyone there was accommodating.

Walking to another beach is not an option-as far as I know. The fact we could not swim and had to wade was the biggest disappointment.

No real option to walk elsewhere. I walked as far as I could. I guess if you were adventurous you could try?

I can post a picture up if you like to see what I mean.

Maybe it opens up on the other side?

The other direction is the nude beach that had a guard on the 'jetty"

further down that way is the excursion areas for the ship, red stripe and chukka (sp)

from what I remember when I was looking at stuff.

And yeah I felt like it was a bad thing with the money. Im not afraid to say it..lol

We were 10 people and 6 went first on return trip leaving us 4 to stay and wait 1/2 hour for them to come back.

They were not going to let the 1st leave until all was paid up.

Something to do with money being owed by someone for trip (not beer), but was already paid to (owner) and not written down or told to the driver.

let me go through my pics

Here is from the hut. down the beach.

at the jetty it goes left to the rest of the pictures.

In theory maybe you could walk around????

and the right side. guard at jetty (no camera, no pictures of nudes..lol)

I will say if the tide was down it might account for some* water level, but I dont see how it could effect much

I'm a bit more skeptical about going now, but I think we'll still make the attempt. We have a sea day before and after our Jamaica stop, so even sitting on the beach w/a beer will be fine!

Thanks again

You can leave at any time. Just tell Harvel what time you want to leave or just let him know when your ready and he will take you back.

That sounds good, we will be going in Jan! How long a ride from the port? Thank you for all your help!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hated to hear some of the negative things, but after looking at other options I think we are still gonna give this place a shot...

I don't want a 30 min bus ride to Montego bay and all the All inclusive options are so expensive and margaritaville still does no have a pool....

My hubby and I are always up for a good adventure off the beaten path and I think we have a few others wanting to venture out with us too.

I will just make sure there is someone at the bar if I want something..Won't use the honor system then no worries!! LOL

Looking forward to hearing more "positive" feed back..Trip advisor has some great reviews too.

We are heading to time n place as well. I'm going with my in laws husband and 3 year old and we just want to relax go to a place like this is what we want. I emailed tony the owner but haven't heard back from him. Anyone knows how to find transportation to time n place from the port? How much to stay there for the day? I will post my reviews when I get back we are going on oasis on the week of thanksgiving. I usually don't go by the negative reviews because we all have different expectations and not everyone is acceptable to cultures like the one in Jamaica when all they like is to be happy enjoy life and make others feel welcome. I love Jamaica can't wait to go back

Here is website http://www.mytimeandplace.com

There is a form to sign up there. Best way is to book online with him $10 deposit/$10 when you arrive. You would have to do a short walk to bank to meet driver. I read that cabs are more $ and sometimes cabs in that area are a bit "sketchy".

This is exactly how we are booking for our visit in January!! I am kind of excited! I really want to try the Lobster....

I wondered about being able to walk along the beach. I know there is a nude resort, right next door.

Response was that if one wanted to walk for miles, you could ask the guard between the nude resort and TNP to escort you through their beachfront and then could continue walking for awhile.

Does anyone know if you can walk the beach to the other side of TNP?

Yes, you can. If you do, you'll eventually get to Red Stripe Beach. It's a bit more rustic in that direction:
