stecee Posted August 23, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 23, 2013 We are due to go on our first cruise in a couple of weeks, around the med on the NCL Epic. When the ship docks, do they supply a shuttle to get out of the port, to areas where you can pick up public transport? The ports we will be docking are Livorno, Barcelona, Marsaille, Palma (Majorca) Rome and Naples.
Rare Keith1010 Posted August 23, 2013 #2 Share Posted August 23, 2013 I would post this on the NCL Board as this does vary by cruise line. For Rome I will tell you that it is 90 minutes from the port so there will not be a shuttle. They might offer the opportunity to purchase an excursion where you can take a bus to Rome and visit on your own and then take the bus back. You have other options including the train. paul929207 Posted August 23, 2013 #4 Share Posted August 23, 2013 Actually, in Rome there is a shuttle supplied by the port. However, it just gets you to the port entrance. From there you will need to arrange to get to Rome an hour or so away.
Rare Keith1010 Posted August 23, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 23, 2013 Rome is about 90 minutes from the port. Keith
Rare cruisemom42 Posted August 23, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 23, 2013 It is just under an hour from Civitavecchia to Rome on the Regionale trains (54 to 57 minutes, depending on the timing). The faster trains get there as quickly as 42 minutes!
jocap Posted August 23, 2013 #7 Share Posted August 23, 2013 Livorno port also provides a shuttle bus, as they don't want people to be wandering through a very busy area. It used to be €5, but some cruise lines arrange it so that you can pay on board with your ship's card. Most likely there will be a shuttle in Palma, as the Cathedral and main shopping area are about a mile away from the dock. If you can walk a mile, it's quite interesting to stay on the harbour side and see the amazing yachts. The shuttles park near the harbour, then it's a pleasant walk up to the city centre. Be aware that eating outside the cafes in the main square is much more expensive than inside; if you need a loo, then there's a MacDonald's in the square, and the coffee's quite cheap for Palma! Actually, in Civi, there's a MacDs near the port gate; handy for the loo at the price of a coffee if you've just walked from the station! ;)
