In Vanuatu AUD will be accepted everywhere and in the markets everything is quoted in AUD. We have used AUD in the pharmacy and in a general store in Vila as well as the more tourist-oriented businesses.

 

In Noumea, it depends on what you want to do. If you are going on a ship's tour or buying a tour in the terminal on the dock, AUD is OK. You will need French Pacific Francs (XPF) if you want to go on a public bus or taxi, or go to the aquarium, museum or gardens. Some shops accept AUD and some don't.

In Noumea , if you want to buy exclusive and very expensive jewellery , fashion or art , you can also use any spare Euros you have lying around.:D:D

In port Vila, they will give you Aussie $ change for Aussie dollars spent, but in Noumea, if you pay for something in Aussie $, they will give you change in French francs. So either pay for stuff in Noumea with your credit card or have close to exact Maloney in small Aussie change.

If you use Aussie dollars alway have heaps of $5 and $10 notes there prices are ALWAYS odd numbers LOL

We were in Vila last October and when we paid for stuff at the markets near pier we paid in Aus dollars but they gave us change in Vatu (their currency).

That is more common than being given change in AUD. I own a business here in Port Vila and we rarely keep AUD in our tills so normally have to give change in Vatu, particularly early in the day. Towards the end of the day though we will usually have enough small change in AUD to be able to give it back.
