Loved the Carnival Triumph

My review of the Carnival Triumph. We sailed Sept 28th.

This was our second time aboard the Triumph. Our first was December 2012. We had thruster issues on that cruise and lost almost an entire day. We also missed our scheduled port. Subsequently to top it all off our son ended up with food poisoning on the way down to Galveston (he was medically cleared to cruise) and then our luggage was delivered and someone’s smuggled wine had burst and leaked all over our luggage and clothes. It had the ingredients of a cruise from hell, but we still managed to walk away feeling as if we had a wonderful time.

I could only imagine that our second time onboard the Triumph would be so much better, especially with the 2.0 upgrades. We were not disappointed. Cruisers were Me and Hubby (cabin 7377), My mom and son (cabin 7395) and my grandparent’s best friends (cabin 6208). All 3 are balcony cabins.

Cabins:

6208 is a handicapped cabin. It was awesome. There was a lot of room. I was really impressed. It was all the way forward though. I was thankful the movement did not bother them as they are quite elderly and I could really feel the movement in their room. The only concern they had was the first night at sea the door that goes out onto the front deck had a broken latch and therefore banged all night. Guest services promised it would be fixed the next day and it was.

Cabin 7395 had plumbing issues. The sink leaked and you could tell it had been doing it for a while as the wall appeared to be water damaged. The plumber was there 3 times to try to fix it during the 5 day cruise and I still do not think it was entirely solved.

Cabin 7377 was a gem! Lol. No complaints out of me. This was our first balcony cabin ever that had a 3rd bed that was a pull down from the ceiling. Our son promptly claimed it as his and left Maw Maw with the leaky sink. We shared the same room steward so it was no biggie (we gave him a nice little tip at the end of the cruise for his trouble).

The boat itself seemed to be in fine condition. It was not completely redone and “Sunshined” but did seem to have all the necessary replacements from my point of view. Our cruise group organized a cabin crawl which took us down to deck’s 1 and 2. The carpet all appeared to be new. The rooms that were shown were all very nice and had the new flat screen TV’s. There were also zero odors.

2.0 Ugrades:

We noticed the main pool was redone and that was nice. They also added 2 new hot tubs. We did not spend any time at the Red Frog RumBar or the Blue Iguana Tequila Bar. They were both nicely done. I enjoyed the décor.

Alchemy Bar: I could not pass this one up. I tried the Chipotle Pineapple Martini and holy cow was it delicious! It was pricy but worth every drop J

EA Sports Bar: Must have been great. It was always packed when it was open. We did walk through when it was closed and it looks very nice! We are Cowboys fans (Unfortunately) and their game was not on the list of those to be played fleet wide. I was pleasantly surprised to see the Cowboys game would be showing on the big screen by the pool. It wasn’t, however, shown in your cabins so we ended up sitting at the empty black jack tables in the casino and watching it on their TV’s.

Guy’s Burgers did not disappoint. They fully lived up to their name. For some reason I was under the impression you ordered the type of burger you wanted and they made it for you. Instead you get in line and they just give you the buns with cooked patties and cheese. There is a condiment bar off to the side where you actually make your burger. The signs are up if you wish to follow the recipe or you can just add toppings to your heart’s content. Hubby was in heaven… especially after he figured out he could ask for 2 patties and make it a double heart attack… I mean double meat burger.

Blue Iguana Taco Bar. In the mornings you could get a breakfast burrito. Lots of choices for meat and toppings. They also had breakfast taco’s you could get with fried eggs on top. Those were delicious! In the afternoons you could still have burrito’s or taco’s. I’m in love with the fish taco’s. Just like Guys Burgers off to the side was the “salsa cart” with all your toppings, fixings and fresh watermelon.

Inside was the buffet. In the mornings when we were in port, there was a line. We usually waited no more than 5 minutes or so. There are 3000 passengers on board… I expect a line every once in a while. Buffet was nice. I ate it for breakfast several mornings. I love Eggs Benedict and it was always there J There was also an omelet station in the mornings which was good. In the afternoon the buffet was The Comfort Buffet. It had your typical choices of food.

Chopstick’s had the Asian food. It was good. I loved the egg rolls (spring rolls). On the other side were the deli sandwiches which I always like as well. I tried to discipline myself and try each place at least once for lunch.

Main Dining Room:

I absolutely love it. I like to change into something nice and head down to dinner as a family. All the selections and choices are amazing. My only problem is there usually isn’t enough room to put it all. The spring rolls on the every day menu are amazing! I usually order them every night. Escargot is also good and so are the spicy alligator fritters off the didja menu.

It always amazes me the amount of people that will stare at you as you are eating and ask how something was… but will never try it for themselves. My advice to you timid cruisers is eat it… try it… you have already paid for it! If you don’t like it… send it back. Your Momma isn’t going to send you to bed with no dinner if you don’t eat it. Spread your wings a little. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Shows:

The Welcome Aboard Show was great. Jen the cruise director is funny and engaging. The next night we went to see The Around the World show. It was nice, but seemed a little long for us. Our son got bored and we ended up leaving before it was over. We kept meaning to go to some of the comedy shows, but never made it. We also did not make it to see the last show The Big Easy. The Love and Marriage Show was awesome… but mostly because my grandparent’s friends that went with us ended up winning! They brought the house down and were hilarious! We all piled back in their room and enjoyed the bottle of champagne with them.

Casino: Usually we are casino players. As a matter of fact we were on this cruise with a casino discount and free cash at the casino desk, but we didn’t gamble much. It was more of a family cruise for us and a quick little get a way so we were playing it low key J I did spend $50 on the slot machines and manage to donate all of it. We also played about $10 in the casino vault machine and didn’t win. I am sure we were disappointing to the Carnival Marketing Geniuses… but oh well. There is always next time! The casino has been rearranged a little. Instead of 1 poker table, there are now 2 and there are several new slot machines than before.

Arcade: Our son never misses an arcade. Prior to the upgrades the entrance to the arcade looked like a Caboose from a train. It was really rather neat. That is no more. It is more of a bland entrance now. I did not like that cosmetic change. The arcade on this ship is small… or so it seems after leaving the one on the Magic. It does have a super awesome air hockey game. Not just 1 puck to bat around back and forth…. It has about 20 that fly onto the table and about the time you think you have gotten them all taken care of… here they come again. It is rather exhausting for an adult to play… but very, very fun.

Ports:

Progreso: This was our 4th time to Progreso. We sort of felt like we had “been there and done that”. We decided this time instead of booking an excursion we would just take the free bus into town and walk around the market. We did this and really enjoyed the town. The meat market is “eye opening” to say the least… hubby lost his appetite. We found a guy offering tours for $15 adult and $10 child. It took you around town, out to the salt mines, to see the pink flamingo’s, to Ishcambul Ruins (sp?) and then finally to the Technohotel beach and resort. We thought that was a pretty good idea. We did travel on an air conditioned bus… that was a must. It was a very good and informative tour. The resort was nice. The water and beach seemed better than the general one you see off the port and go to on all the other excursions. At the resort you could purchase a wristband for all you could eat food, drinks and alcohol for $20. This was a pretty good deal. Food and drinks were plentiful and good. Everyone on the tour (12 of us) each tipped the driver $2 and he took us straight back to the port. Best day ever in Progreso. I will do this option again!

Inside the market in Progreso they were offering massages $10 for 30 minutes. On the beach at the resort it was $25 for 30 minutes.

Cozumel: We did the Beginner’s Scuba. I am terrified of water and I thought this excursion was great! Our son is also only 10 and he met the age requirement. It was a wonderful experience. You take a taxi (un air-conditioned), but thankfully it isn’t far. We received a small classroom instruction on basic … how not to die under the water survival. Then they strapped us down with weights, fins and a tank and into the water we went. They put our son’s gear on IN the water as I don’t think he could have walked with it on land. We did some more instruction in the water and had to demonstrate we understood what we had learned. Once we were accustomed to breathing under the water we were taken down. They do have a flotation ring at the top of the water with a rope so you can grab onto it if you need it. We only went down about 30-35 feet and were underwater about 45 minutes. It was wonderful for our first time and we all enjoyed it immensely. I felt I got our money’s worth out of this excursion and it was actually cheaper than most that were offered. After your dive you could stay and snorkel for free. Free taxi services were provided back to the port. You could also choose to dive again if you wanted for $45. Lockers were available for rent. $2 They were large enough for our backpack, clothes, shoes and still had room to spare. We purchase 2 pictures 2 for $25.

Embarkation we used Faster To The Fun. It was quick and smooth. Debarkation really wasn’t bad. We met in the Rome Lounge at 9am. About 9:30 or so they told us we could leave. There were still self assist passengers debarking and you had to try to fit in the line with them, but overall it went well.

My only complaint is twice now we have stayed at the Hampton Inn Galveston pre cruise. They offer cruise parking (at a price) and a free shuttle to and from the ship. The first time we used them was May of this year. We called when we debarked and they told us the driver was under the orange flag… which he was not. It was raining. We waited approx. 30 minutes and ended up carrying our bags down the ramp and paid for a taxi.

This time we expressed our concern on being picked and they assured us we would have a timely ride back to the hotel. Upon debarkation we called and were told the shuttle was on its way but was picking up another party of 7. We waited approximately 10-15 minutes on the curb and the first shuttle arrived. The party they were there to pick up only had half of their members present as the rest had been detained in customs. The driver would not take our complete party (even though we had some in wheelchairs and it was very hot outside). He just told us he would take the first part of the group that was ready, drive fast and be back soon.

Again after waiting we ended up taking a taxi. Literally 50 minutes later the driver called my phone and told me he was back at the port and wondered where we were! Umm… Houston already was what I told him! While I really like staying at the Hampton Inn’s. I will never again pay to park my car there and rely on their transportation. Both times it would have been cheaper for us to pay for parking at the port than pay for parking at the hotel and still end up paying a taxi. Save yourself the frustration!

On another note… both vehicles were totally invaded with ants upon our return (and yes we cleaned everything out before we cruised… there was no trash or food to draw them in). Had to have both vehicles fumigated L

Overall it was a great relaxing cruise. We enjoyed the Triumph and will cruise on her again for another quick get a way! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I will tell you all I know and can remember :p

Thank you so much for the review, going on the triumph in November. We usually cruise on celebrity because of I am a bit of a foodie. I have not been on carnival in several years, and I would appreciate any hints you can give me about good choices in the main dining room. An d any other advice. Thanks

I would definitely look into The Chef's Table. It is an extra charge, but well worth it. If you are a foodie you will not be disappointed!

Rarely do I order something in the MDR that I don't like. The main thing to remember is you can order as much as you like and it you get something that you don't particularly care for, send it back. They will always bring you something else.

For appetizers the spring rolls, escargot and duck are my favorite. The soup appetizers are really good too!

Can almost never go wrong with the Didja Ever Options (I don't like frog legs... Others say they are great)

Main courses I really like the lasagna, lobster and prawns, and I am a sucker for pastas :)

Deserts:! Bitter and blanc and warm chocolate melting cake are my favs.

Thank you for posting your review! We will be on the Triumph for Christmas this year. It will be our third time on this ship and we are looking forward to it! We have not been on her since the upgrades so excited about that.

Sailed in August and we are sailing again 10/26! Embarkation was a breeze, got to port @ 10:30 and we were in line at Chopsticks @ 11:30! De-embarkation was even quicker. We left our deck 8 cabin @ 8 am (self-assist) and we were in our car driving home @ 8:30. Parked inside at Park N Cruise, $45. Everything in-between was great, which is why we going again in 3 weeks.

It almost seems like appetizers are the best. Can I order one of the appetizers as a main course?

Absolutely! You can order 3 appetizers to be your 3-course meal, or more. I have been known to order 3 appetizers plus an entree before. You can order 2 entrees. I've asked for 2 lobster dishes before. It's whatever you want.

OP, thank you for the great review. I love the Triumph too. It's nice to hear another positive report.

Bitter and blanc is sooooo good, can't wait to have some next week! I missed it last cruise and the waiter surprised me with it the last night. Love it!!

I sure wish the Triumph had the mini fridges in the rooms...

The steward was tipped a $20 the first time I saw him and ask him to keep our little coolers full of ice. 1 to keep water and sodas in and 1 to use in our tervis tumblers to mix drinks in. He did an excellent job. :D

Glad to hear you liked the Triumph.

I always got a giggle coming out of the Rome Lounge because on one side, there is a mosaic that I guess is supposed to show typical Roman life or something. It's got naked boys (men???) and I couldn't help but laugh. Because nekkidness is funny. :D

This doesn't sound accurate to me. On the Liberty, I always ordered specific burgers off the posted menu. I believe if you don't say anything to the person at the counter they will just give you a regular cheeseburger but you can definitely order the specialized burgers on the menu and they will make it for you.

Thank you for the review! We can't wait to sail on 10/21. My husband would like to know if the Triumph has a fish & chips stand.

Unless someone can correct me, I do not believe the Triumph has fish and chips. I haven't seen it on my 2 cruises.

I don't recall seeing fish and chips on there in December. And since I'm a huge fan of fish and chips, I probably would have found them if they had been.

Thanks for the review! We'll be getting on Triumph Nov 4th...can't wait! Oh, and we, too, have had our car invaded by ants while parked during a cruise!!

OMG... We have been cruising 8 years and this was the first time! It was awful :( I fumigated all our clothes and luggage too.
