Caribbean SIM card

I'll be taking a cruise stopping in Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, And St. Martin.

 

I have an unlocked quad band phone. Is there a pre-paid SIM card i can buy to use in all these different places?

 

What's the best way to make calls with my cell phone back to US?

Well, Puerto Rico is definitely considered part of the US for most phone plans. And St Thomas for some...

I was able to make and receive calls on my Verizon phone in PR under my regular plan minutes.

PR and USVI are part of T-Mobile coverage. If you dont have T-Mobile then you may be able to buy a sim when there.

I do have a T-Mobile phone and also AT&T.

 

If I use the T-mobile phone, do I get charged according to my usual rate plan in PR and USVI ?

I would check with the carrier - they're really the only ones who can answer your questions.

We have AT&T. St Thomas and Puerto Rico are included in the plans. You could buy some international minutes from AT&T for the other islands.

 

Buying minutes is a lot easier than dealing with SIM cards, especially when being in port for a very short period of time

Since you are only going to one foreign port, it may make more sense to utilize international roaming service of T-mobile/AT&T. Check with your provider for the rates - double check because St. Martin is two separate countries, and the rates may be different.

 

***IMPORTANT*** International data rates are typically MUCH higher than when in the US. I turn off International data service on my phone any time I cruise.

Yes, PR and USVI are part of T-Mobile regular coverage. And T-Mobiles new international roaming prices are so low you won't need a foreign sim.

Thanks for all the help. It never occurred to me that PR and USVI would be part of domestic coverage plans. And I won't bother worrying about the port of St. Martin where we'll be for only a few hours.
