I doubt that either charter (Sochi or Superbowl) was a bad decision from NCL's point of view. You can be sure they got the price they wanted for the ships, or they wouldn't have taken them out of regular service.

Ncl was probably paid mega bucks more than they would of made... Lots more

NCL is interested in paid cabins at top dollar and won't mind if there are some no shows.

 

The inflated prices will make up any revenue lost on onboard sales.

NCL almost certainly got cash in advance for the entire ship. No money is going to be lost by NCL. The Olympics might tank though.

NCL certainly got as much or more than they would have earned by having the ship in service.

Charter was cancelled at the last minute.

 

So NCL did a dry dock instead.
