Lanyard- Fancy or not?

Lanyards seem to be a personal issue. I used to hate them, and thought they looked silly. Then I started using one. Now I wouldn't cruise without it. They are so handy. Your room key is always right there. In the Casino it is great. I tend to lose little purses or not know where to put them, ie rest room or crowded table.I put a lanyard around my neck and forget it.

At 66 I'm not as concerned about what others think. Comfort and ease are what I'm looking for.

I bought a handmade beaded one on Etsy for $20. Considering what I spend on other items for my cruise it was a bargain. I am seeing more and more lanyards on our cruises.

So while not for everyone, for me it works and is an essential part of my cruising attire.

Maybe I should mention that when I travel overseas I like the neck pouch where I can keep my passport and tickets, thus keeping my hands free. My DH laughed when I bought the neck pouch but after several busy airports going through customs, immagration and plane changes, he has become a believer.

You're right, it is a personal choice. Personally I've never worn a lanyard. I have a small long-handled cross-body bag that holds my blistex, reading glasses, small camera, room card...I guess that's about it. Just can't be without any of that and it won't all fit into a lanyard.

If just going to the buffet for a quick breakfast, I put the room card in my shorts pocket and after breakfast, it's back to the room to get my small purse (and brush my teeth).

Good luck and have fun on your cruise.

Just tossing in my 2 cents: Only 1 cruise to my name but my children & I used layards. Hubby has pockets so he didn't. We used some freebie ones we had around the house. On our next cruise, two of us will be using laynards again. The kids thought it was great to be hands-free. My DD will probably have a small crossbody type pouch so she has somewhere to put her card & I-phone (to use to take pictures).

1st cruise coming up - I plan to take one or two. I'm trying to find a cross body bag but IMO, they look about as dorky as a lanyard and the ones I found did not have secure closure for when I end up turning it upside down.

I don't have pockets in a lot of my pants, besides that, I've lost things out of pockets before.

I don't like the idea of a bag on the ship and certainly not going to have things dangling off my arm/wrist.

So my card/cash is either going to be nestled with the girls or on a lanyard. Because, you know, I won't look like a tourist on the ship or in port digging stuff out of my bra....\\

ETA woot woot I just saw my sig - I'm under 60 days!!!! I better get shopping!

  • 2 weeks later...

Just came back from my cruise - tons of people with lanyards! I loved using mine, made life onboard so much easier. Just grab and go. Some new friends of ours even went to the shops and bought one for themselves.

I've never worn a lanyard on a cruise. If I am carrying a bag, the card is in there. If not, it's in my husband's pocket.:) I've cruised a few times without my husband and never wished I had a lanyard. I've never lost my card.

Undoubtedly, you are much more "together" than I am. :)

I lost plenty of cards until I got my lanyards.

Do those of you who have lost cruise cards also lose credit cards, keys, etc. when you are at home, or it is just a vacation thing?

I don't travel with a SO and rarely wear anything with pockets. Even if I did, I would still carry my own S&S card because asking for it every time I need it is a pain.

At home, I carry a purse. On a cruise, I'm not going to carry a big purse when I don't need all that stuff. So no. I don't lose that stuff at home, but I don't use pockets for it at home either.

On board, I use either an evening bag (dinner), beach bag (pool) or lanyard and carry my camera case (daytime when I don't need the extra room of the beach bag).

Though I sometimes misplace my keys at home, I think the misplacement of my sea pass cards is a vacation thing, but I don't need a card to get in and out of my house or to get a drink from my own bar or refrigerator.

I know that you can get the free lanyards in the casino...but I am also using these as gifts. We have 3 males and 3 females sailing. I got the 3 guys great buys off eBay of NFL lanyards which I know they will each wear proudly. Now the problem is for myself, sister & Niece. I see the "Rhinestone" ones on eBay from 99-4.99 plus shipping but I saw the same things in the $ store for a buck (no shipping there) but they look like stickers. Like gel, rhinestone stickers and even in the store some were falling/peeling off the lanyard. Grant you, I know it was a dollar store so what to expect. Even Dollar General has the same rhinestone "sticker" type but selling for 5.99 I would hate to spend even the buck to have these little gel stickers stuck to us the first day.

So then I started looking at bead ones...I really don't want to go over 5.00 incase they don't hold up either. Has anyone found any good ones that look nice (like a necklace) that hold up and hasn't broken? Can you post the website or a pic of what you use.

Also, do the bead type ones pull your hair? All 3 of us have long hair. Sorry to have made this a short novel!!! Thanks for reading!

I have a black sparkly one that I use in the evening. It actually looks like a little beaded edging with some of my tops, since I tuck the card under my top. This one came from amazon.

I also got a turquoise blue fabric one at the Dollar Store. Since a lot of my warm weather tops have aqua in them, this lanyard looks good with them, also with the card tucked under.

I just have a problem wearing my card hanging outside my tops: kind of a teensy bit of privacy anxiety.

One caution for the lanyard-wearing ladies: Don't wear your camera around your neck while you are wearing your lanyard. Some cameras (mine) will de-magnify the sea pass card. Happened to me 3 times before I and the guest relations folks realized that it was my camera.
