Never been to Florida.. we are coming in for a Cruise and staying a few days post Cruise..

I have found a few Hotels, but after reading so many reviews I am quite confused..lol..its during Christmas which I know makes the price higher, want a safe and clean place that not too hard to get to things from..

So I looked into

Embassy Suites, FLL

EmbassySuites, Miami airport

Holiday Inn, 999 FT. LAUDERDALE BEACH BLVD

Also : Holiday Inn Express FT. LAUDERDALE-CONV CTV

Also Irelands Inn?? any idea on this one?

If you have any words of wisdom that would be GREAT.. we are a family of 5.. we may rent a car so we can get to the Aquarium and other activities..we fly in and out of FLL airport as well..

I need some help as I read roaches were found at one of the Embassy Suites..yucko!!

Thanks for any help

:)

Well first of all you can find a roach ANYWHERE in the tropics! And they LOVE Florida!!! You have to be VERY careful with food down here, you have to keep everything sealed and rinse soda cans and drink bottles. They can come in through openings you can't even see, and if you leave something out you shouldn't, they'll find it!

If you're going to spend a few days I would highly recommend you rent a car as everything is pretty spread out and it sounds like you'd like to do some exploring.

I would forget the Embassy Suites MIAMI as it's not a very nice one, and not in a very nice area.

Embassy Suites FORT LAUDERDALE is nice, and they're remodeling soon to make it even nicer. It's just a bit worn around the edges now, but not bad at all. It's a very popular hotel in a great location.

Holiday Inn Express Convention Center on SE 17th Street is a very nice budget hotel (no pool if that matters to you). It's just a few blocks from Embassy Suites, a great location!

The Holiday Inn on Fort Lauderdale beach (actually across the street from the beach) is an older hotel, nothing fancy, but okay. The location is great and the views from it's rooms spectacular.

Ireland's Inn is an older hotel. I haven't been in it though and don't know much about it, but the location is fine.

Here are a few others you may want to consider...

If you want something on the beach, a nice hotel with a beautiful new tower (I would only stay in the new tower) is Pelican Beach Resort... http://www.pelicanbeach.com/

Harbor Beach Marriott is also very nice... http://www.marriottharborbeach.com/

You may want to consider something in Hollywood Beach, or Sunny Isles Beach as well. They're between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, not too far from FLL, and very well located for exploring both the Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas.

On Hollywood Beach there's a brand new Marriott... http://www.hollywoodbeachmarriott.com/

In beautiful Sunny Isles Beach...

Doubletree Ocean Point... http://www.oceanpointresort.com/

Trump International Sonesta Beach... http://www.sonesta.com/SunnyIsles/

Le Meridien... http://www.lemeridien.com/usa/miami/hotel_us1840.shtml

Well I didn't list any downtown MIAMI hotels, but I don't particularly care for the Miami Radisson. It's not in a nice neighborhood and it's on top of a long closed shopping mall. There's nothing to walk to, but it's a short cab ride to Bayside Marketplace or South Beach.

In downtown Miami I prefer...

JW Marriott... http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/miajw

Intercontinental... http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ic/1/en/hd/miaha?irs=null

How can some of these hotels justify their pricing, 300-500 per night...who would or could afford to stay there..wow...not me..

I'll agree that some of the prices are insane, but they seem to be getting them. There are a lot of dates this winter/spring that are sold out already. Hotel prices in general are way up all over the country. More people are traveling than ever before, and an additional reason prices are up so much in Fort Lauderdale this winter/spring is the King Tut exhibit will be in town from December 15 to April 23.

Hello. I just found a good deal ($79) on this beach front hotel for one night precruise. Any info on it? We are travelling with 2 children and want to be on the beach and near the water taxi...Does any one know if this is a decent place?

Thank you for your help

Trent S - you have probably answered this somewhere on the boards - but is the Comfort Inn on Stirling in a "safe" area? I consider it a basic, no frills motel and have read good and bad reviews. I am more interested in the area as we will be renting a car so we can go elsewhere to eat, etc. but I also want to feel safe there. I understand it has exterior entrances which I am not particularly fond of. Thanks for any help.

It's an okay area... The area I would avoid is State Road 84 (SR84)... I can't comment on that particular Comfort Inn, but the reviews I've seen are very mixed. There's a strip mall next door, but if you have a rental car you can easily venture out to other areas.

Trent S

I understand you are the man to talk to, and after reading these threads it appears so. So anyhow, I have a question I am hoping you can help me with. I am looking at Amerisuites and Holiday Inn Express both off of 17th by the Port. How far apart are they, which would you choose, are they both reasonably close to the water taxi stop? We are staying two days pre cruise in Jan 06. Do they provide the same accomadations? Do either have a safe in the room? Sorry for all the questions but I am stuck between which one to pick. My BIL can actually get me a room at Pier 66 for about 140 a night but now I heard it was sold becasue I know it was not truly a part of the Hyatt franchise to begin with, but I still think that you get more from the other hotels with the breakfast(free) shuttle(free) than you do from Pier 66. Ok so now I have completly rambled. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Well first of all Hyatt Pier 66 is still marketed as a Hyatt. Yes, it was sold last winter, but was not actually owned by Hyatt corp. The Hyatt name is just a franchise, as are most of the other brands, very few are actually owned by the companies.

Between the Holiday Inn Express on SE 17th Street and AmeriSuites just off of SE 17th Street I would go with the Holiday Inn Express. Holiday Inn Express is a bit nicer, and it's a few blocks closer to the Water Taxi stop at the Marina Marriott. Both are within easy walking distance to shops, restaurants, grocery, drug & liquor stores... Sorry, I never noticed safes (or looked for them) so I can't answer that question.

What is wrong with SR 84 area? We are booked at the Holiday Inn Ex Seaport and airport in Jan. Are we in the wrong area and why?

State Road 84 is an industrial area in a not so nice neighborhood. There isn't much of anything to walk to, but I wouldn't care to walk around in that area anyway.

The SE17th Street area that I recommend is just outside the entrance to the port, closer to the airport, and much nicer, safer, and has a large number of restaurants, nice new grocery/drug/liquor stores, as well as everything else you could possibly want that can you can easily and safely walk to, as well as walk to the Water Taxi.

If you want a Holiday Inn Express I would recommend the one on SE 17th Street... http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ex/1/en/hd/fllcc

Or Extended Stay America is another budget hotel next door... http://www.extendedstayamerica.com/hotels/fort-lauderdale-convention-center-marina.html

AmeriSuites is also in the same area... http://amerisuites.com/reservations/locationdetail.asp?facid=3929

AmeriSuites is cheaper on Priceline, or one of the discount hotel sites such as Valuetrips... http://www.valuetrips.com/AMS/FL/F17.htm

I can't even find a comfort inn or suite on SR84 in Fort Lauderdale - we will be staying at the Comfort Suites on Federal Highway - is this the same one?

Ron

No, there aren't any Comfort Inn's on State Road 84. One of the above posters was asking if the one on Stirling Road was in a safe area.

The Comfort Suites on Federal Highway is just a block south of SE 17th Street. It's a bit of a walk to anything other than fast food or Dennys, but that area is okay. If you're not used to lots of traffic noise request a room on the east side as the street side rooms are practically ON the street.
