If hundreds if not thousands of people walked in the same area and never fell, clearly this lady was inattentive. Just ask my boss.

Just remember there is no hospital at sea so be extra careful on those mini golf courses out there!

Let's hope that NCL sees that they need to spread the passengers out more the way RCCl does and makes that change on the Escape.

I sure hope so, Irene! I think they did well with the Epic. A lot of people don't like that ship, but it definitely didn't feel as compact as the Getaway. I'd go on the Getaway again though. There was so much that we didn't get to do simply because we ran out of time. The crew, at least on our sailing, was top notch, as was the food.

You are right! Weight is very subjective. The women looked to be in her mid 60's, probably weighing in around 150ish, or possible a dress size 12ish. She looked like your average grandmother:D

Thanks for the clarification. Doesn't seem like her size would have been an issue judging by that information.

It does not matter how large or small the woman was - that was not only insane, it was reckless, and they may very well have done more harm than good. How they can not have trained first responders is beyond me. It is shocking and appalling. I hope she contacts an attorney. Moreso, I hope they did not do more damage to her than she already had just from the fall alone.

It absolutely matters. I initially asked because it's not unusual for emergency responders, even those ashore, to have difficulties assisting larger individuals. Without knowing the exact circumstances, its a bit premature to jump to the conclusion that the crew did not receive training, or that they acted in a reckless manner. Unless the accident caused a serious, permanent disability, there wouldn't be much point in contacting an attorney. The cost of paying the attorney will undoubtedly be higher than anything you'll get out of NCL.

Hi all,

We have sailed both Royal and NCL multiple times. We love both lines, however I prefer Royal where my husband prefers NCL.

I was horrified to hear about the poor woman, however, I think it has more to do with the ship's personnel rather than NCL.

We cruised on Breakaway in December 2013 and my daughter broke her leg on day 5 of a 7 day cruise. She received excellent care in the ship's medical facility and for the 2 days left before we came back to NY.

As everyone knows, each experience is different and I just wanted to share ours.

I thought you were wondering if she was too fat to see where she was walking

Yes, it certainly sounds like it was a matter of untrained staff. Hopefully the lady is ok. It's a shame she's not here on CC. Glad your daughter was taken care of! My husband has been a FF Captain / Paramedic for 25 years. When I told him about this, he said the exact same thing I did ... untrained first responders. Hopefully this was just a fluke!!

Public Rooms

Oasis/Allure has my vote again. Don’t get me wrong both ships are beautiful and are decorated beautifully, I just feel that Oasis’s layout and grandiosity of their public areas is amazing. Like I mentioned before the WOW factor is there!

Getaway is comprised of a lot of small areas that are tastefully designed. However, there were a few misses for me. One miss is the casino. It is awkwardly placed in the middle of the ship and almost seems like an afterthought. Having a more defined area for a casino adds to the excitement IMHO. Next miss is the theater. It is small and nondescript. The theater on both Freedom and Oasis class ships blow it out of the water. And don’t even let me get into the pool deck. Those of you who have sailed both classes know exactly what I mean. Let’s just say pool real estate is limited on the Getaway. Plus I REALLY missed the solarium on the Oasis. It is opulent and beautiful. The Getaway H2O spice was bare and non-descript. Kind of a waste of space, they had so much room they could have really done more.

On a side note, one thing that drove me crazy in the public areas were where they decided to set up professional pictures. Without fail the pictures were set up in the middle of a high traffic area where you would have to wait until the photographer finished taking the picture. Not a big deal but annoying.

I know it seems like I am slamming the Getaway, so I want to throw in some positive experiences that were better than RCI. First were the drink prices. I like bloody Mary’s and virgin smoothies, both were under $6. I also ordered the mojioto flight. This also came in a beer flight and a matini flight. The presentation is beautiful. It gives you 6 differnt variations of the cocktail for $15. Great deal! Also I thought the bartenders on RCI could be pushy and at times annoying, Getaway bar staff were not. Another big plus for Getaway is how they welcome you back from port. When you return to the ship they hand out cold towels, and water. They throw a little celebration welcoming you back to the ship. This was a nice touch. And the ropes course was AWESOME. We LOVED it. However, be aware, when you get to the zipline portion they will tell you to run and jump off the ledge. Remember to run. On my first try I was so concerned about the rope not supporting my weight that I gently walked off the ledge. Really bad idea!! I got stuck half way across and had to swing my body weight to make it to the other end! This was not a pretty sight and boy was it embarrassing. Lesson learned!

I was thinking the same thing! My father retired after almost 30 years as Deputy Chief of our fire department (I'm not proud at all :p) and he would have been very upset to see that a person of any size was not placed on a back board with her/his neck stabilized before being moved anywhere.

Cabin

We were two families traveling together. The other family decided to get a regular balcony near an elevator. We decided to save $100 and gamble with a guaranteed balcony. We got VERY lucky. We were assigned to room 8112. This room is near the front of the ship. The secret is it has an abnormally large balcony. The average balcony is approximately 30 square feet. Our balcony was over 100 square feet!! Total score! The room and storage were very comparable to rooms that I have had on RCI ships. I did like the shower more on the Getaway, it felt larger. Also there were free movies you could watch on the TV. You could look through a menu on the TV and select a movie. I liked this feature.

On a side note, one thing that annoyed me was the sofa couch not being turned back into a sofa in the morning. At first I thought it might be just our room attendant. I did not complain because he was very nice and I did not want to be a pain. One evening I was talking to the other family about the pro’s and con’s of the Getaway vs. the Oasis, and I said I liked that on the Oasis they make up the sofa bed every morning. My friend confirmed that her room attendant also did not convert the bed. I know it is a small thing, but the small things sometimes make a difference.

We just returned Saturday from our cruise on the Getaway. I was very anxious about this cruise because we are big RCI Oasis/Allure fans and we did not know how the Getaway would stack up to our previous cruise experiences.

Some might ask why try the Getaway at all if you are so enamored with the Oasis class ships, the answer to this question is easy. It came down to money and sailing perks. The week that we were scheduled to sail Getaway the oasis and the allure were going for 1000 more than the reciprocal cabin. Plus they had a special bonus. NCI threw in the ultimate dining package for free for the first two passengers in the room.

Because all of this and our puny vacation budget our choice was simple.

Those of you who are interested in a comparison review between the two ships please stay tuned. Unfortunately I am not a very organized writer and at times I can be random, but feel free to ask any questions that you are curious about or just because you are trying to help me stay on topic.

Good review so far, I am in a similar situation as you. I have been on the Oasis and was booked to go on a "hosted" cruise this October on the Allure. However a group of people I know didn't want to do the Allure since we did the Oasis this past year and talked a "hosted" company into doing the Getaway. The Allure superior ocean view was $2600 as opposed the Getaway mini-suite with large balcony as $2400; however there was a major price drop and I re-booked the same cabin at $1800 plus $140 OBC! This will be my first time on NCL. I think I will like the freestyle dining and probably will be a younger more party crowd but I already know I will miss the Oasis pool deck and public spaces. I want to do Hawaii so I already have booked NCL on the Pride of America, I also want to do a new class ship so have the 5th sailing of the Escape booked. I will have to look at pricing but will wait till a Quantum class ship is sailing out of FL, I am hearing there might be design changes to the Oasis 4 so might sail that when it launches in 2018 if/ when it sails out of FL. One thing that I have noticed about RCCL is that their pricing seems to be going up, with all these new builds especially mega-ships I hope they bring their prices down to a more reasonable level in order to compete.

Thanks for the comparison, My wife and I are sailing Getaway in January 2015 the time of year we always take a cruise. We Love Love the Oasis Class ships, but I have to agree about the bartenders. :p

We are Diamond level with RCL and have sailed Oasis 2 times and Allure once. We love the class of ship and do all specialty dining. So much so that on our last cruise on Oasis the head waiter in Chops gave us a public thank you for dining with them twice in a week.

Here is my rub though, just like was pointed out in a prior post "price". We are sailing in an Aft Penthouse Suite in the Haven for hundreds of dollars less than I can sail on Oasis in a "Jr. Suite". Oasis gives you nothing as a Jr Suite guest. No need as I said we are Diamond but come on a little larger cabin for the price and nothing given. You have to go Grand Suite or higher to get some perks. We have done that but again price. We are excited to experience Haven. Talk about a balcony 300 square feet! To get anything close on Oasis you have to be in the family suites in the back of the ship by the Aqua center $$$$$.

I think your experience on the Getaway will be vastly different than mine. According to reviews that I have read people who have sailed the haven level suites absolutely glow about the experience. At first reading your comment I was hesitant about your choice, but when I read that you would be in the haven it swayed me. I think you might still miss a little bit of the "wow" factor of the Oasis, but the haven area and service should help fill the void. Either way you will have a wonderful time.

We are diamonds on RCI also. We have not been able to travel as of yet in any type of suites; however, we greatly missed our diamond perks on the Getaway. I just wish that RCI would just lower their prices just a bit to put it back in our vaction budget. A girl can wish right?:D

We thought the Getaway was much prettier & brighter than the Epic, which is way too dark & sullen for me..the Epic felt more "vegasie", more like a hotel than the Getaway, IMO....also LOVED the Waterfront..all are more compact than the Oasis ships but those are 70-80,000 tons more...love all the dining options & entertainment on the Getaway...LOVE Teppanyaki, Le Bistro & Cagney's, and NO, I don't think the MDR food on Oasis was nearly as good as Cagney's, but of course, food is sooooo subjective..loved O'sheehan's 24/7 pub with the free fish & chips & good drafts..I wish the British Pub would have more food options on Oasis ships...

Strangely enough, I also had the Oasis (boardwalk balcony, last in the row near the aqua theater) booked this coming August and switched to Getaway during the (Feb?) sale. I had largely given up on NCL due to their limited summer Caribbean cruises and the fact that Miami cruises almost always require me to fly, but with the sale I got a Haven suite + udp + ubp for only about 15% more than the cost of the Oasis cabin. By the time you take into account the savings due to free drinks and specialty restaurants the price was pretty much the same.

I've sailed Oasis and Allure and I am anxious to see the differences. Since I am in the Haven the lack of a Solarium (free 16+ area) isn't as big of a deal as it would otherwise be, although the Solarium on Oasis class boats is amazing. I do think the 4 (different) pools on Oasis class boats are another big plus (along with the FlowRider), but on Getaway you essentially trade those for the water slides and rope course.

The Park Cafe is my go-to spot for breakfast and lunch on Oasis class boats, so I hope the Getaway has something that compares for tastier but simpler eats without the craziness of the buffet.

I've read about crowd issues on the Getaway, mainly after shows. That is one area where NCL should have learned from Royal. On the Oasis class boats when you exit the theater you go one deck up for the (huge) promenade, and one down for the casino. Crowds still linger at the exit, but lots of people quickly make their way to one of those two areas. That area clears really fast, especially since there are so many elevators right there.

That being said I'm not too picky so I know I'll have a good time. So long as the Haven upper deck isn't filled with chair hogs I should have everything I need.

I just got off Oasis a few weeks ago, and the Park Cafe isn't the great secret little hideaway it once was. Long 20 min. waits for paninis was the norm at peak times. Lines that snaked through the little cafe and out the door were also common on sea days. The food's better than the buffet and the MDR for lunch, so I waited anyway, but it didn't used to always be like that.

Not that Getaway does much better. The Flamingo Grill offers something a little different, but there's usually a long line for lunch on sea days too. The buffet layout on Getaway is a horrendous mess, so that makes waiting for the Flamingo tolerable.

Johnny Rockets is still great for breakfast, not that many people realize that its free for breakfast only. Got my French toast, bacon and OJ fix all week. With out door seating you can even have breakfast in the open air!

Johnny Rockets used to my favorite for breakfast, but on this past cruise it was definitely disappointing. The potatoes were cold and stale, and the portions weren't as generous. The bacon was brittle and crumbly too.

I absolutely love the way Getaway is decorated, and I loved the waterfront. I like O'Sheehan's better on the Epic. I missed those "window seats". We'd sit there with some drinks and appetizers and talk and look at the water. You can't do that on Getaway from O'Sheehan's. We spent a lot of time in O'Sheehan's on the Epic. On Getaway, it usually was just for breakfast.

I usually hit it before the crowds to avoid the craziness. That being said, the buffet seems more crowded for longer periods of time.

The main issue is that they will not create separate lines for salads (bagels during breakfast) and sandwiches, which clogs up the entrance. Salads seem to take a little longer, and more often than not (as far as I can tell) most of the people in the long lines are waiting for salads. Many times I've peeked inside to see if the line is actually for sandwiches, and if not I go directly there as sometimes there is actually no one (or just 1-2 people) waiting for them.

I've mentioned it twice in post-cruise surveys.

We ate most of our meals at the buffet (all breakfasts and some of the dinners as well as most lunches) and NEVER encountered a horrendous mess. In fact, I never waited longer than 5 minutes for a made to order omlette or crepe. The buffet wraps around and repeats so you just go to another area if one seems very busy.

It is amazing how people can have completely different experiences on the same ship.

You are so right!

We are a family of five, daimond on RCL, PLAT on NCL. Cannot beat the Haven and the 2 room suite for our needs. On RCL you have to book a year out and snag one if you are lucky! spend 15 k on the big ships and not get anything near the amenities as on NCL- you will be thrilled at the difference! We love RCL as well, but for our cruise bucks the Haven wins, hands down. We have had no interest in sailing out of NY , so are thrilled to try Getaway . While we won't get our giant balcony like on Freedom and Oasis, we don't care. We have the 2 bedrooms that we love, and our Haven as well. All for thousands less. When the kids are off to college in a few years, well get us one of those giant balconies again, AND Haven amenities ...

Have a great trip!

Ann
