Sugar free food aboard Vista Class ships

I'm diabetic. I ask the head waiter the first night to put all sauces on the side. This was done. I also asked which ones were high in sugar and if they would give me low cal dressings. Although, this is my first HAL trip coming up, I hope they will do this as Princess did. I chose sugar free deserts all week and enjoyed them. The one I liked the most they gave me on the last night. I requested it the previous day at lunch and got it for dinner the next night. They also cut my meat one day as I had problems with my hands. The only thing they they can not do is if it is a puff pastry type thing.

I would also inform them if there is a dietary need before hand so that they can have a good selection. Also if she perfers a certain type of sweetner find out if they use it. If not bring your own.

With the huge popularity of Atkins and South Beach, major dining rooms/foor providers know they have to pay some attention to the requirements of these "eating systems". I find that most of our decent local restaurants have approved foods available either as staples on their menus or as specials.

South Beach, of course, approves of "good carbs".....low sugar.

Atkins has made some movement toward approving more carbs than they used to.

I have also noticed on cruises the past couple of years that HAL has had breakfast muffins that are sugar free. I have never tried them so I can't tell you if they are any good.

I rather casually follow Phase III of South Beach as maintenace and as habit avoid foods that raise the glycemic level. It's a matter of habit. There are so many wonderful fruits and vegetables to choose from (and we like almost all of them) that we avoid corn, beets, watermelon, pineapple....foods high in sugar).

I've never tried the sugar free muffins but intend to look for them on Maasdam in July.
