Carnival Cruise Lines To Ban Smoking on Cruise Ship Balconies

We have a cruise booked in August and one going to Hawaii in January. We will be cancelling the one in January. Four and a half days there and four and a half days back is too long a haul to not be able to smoke on your balcony. I really wished they had made one side smoking and one side non smoking. Guess it's back to land vacations.:(

A penalty is great, but is it per instance or will passengers just pay the $250 and puff away?

It is mentioned in the contract the possibility of being put off the ship. I would think pay $250 the first time and if you continue to ignore the rules............;)

Finally a smoking policy that recognizes the scientific evidence that smoking is a health hazard and fire risk (Princess) .

Can't wait to sail on Carnival again.

But they banned my ecig too, which I've been using to quit... sad, because I know I'm gonna walk out to the smoking area's and just bum a regular one now.

I just cancelled our November cruise, which was outside of final payment and re-booked a similar cruise on Norwegian for 2 days longer and less money. There are 2 ports we like less, but that's the only difference. Bye-Bye Carnival!!!!

There will be many people cancelling cruises, maybe this will change their minds? Doubtful-have they ever implemented a policy and reneged after?

I haven't decided if we, as platinum cruises will stop cruising with carnival or if we will simply plan on spending the extra $250 to smoke????

FYI, according to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), 18.1% of all American adults smoke (17.3% for Canadians per Health Canada and Statistics Canada). I think you're asking for too much when you want half the ship reserved for smokers.

July 8, 2014

Greetings folks!

We know your bags aren't packed yet, but it's not too early to start thinking about your cruise. So, we'd like to take this opportunity to provide you some important information regarding changes to our smoking policy and gratuity guidelines.

As part of our continuing commitment to keep in line with the personal preferences of our guests, all staterooms and suites, inclusive of the balconies, will be an entirely smoke-free environment. This change is consistent with the policy of most major cruise lines and will be implemented on October 9, 2014, or any new voyage departing thereafter.

Smoking will continue to be allowed in designated exterior open deck areas, as well as in our night club, and in certain areas within the casino and casino bar.

Guests who smoke in their staterooms or on their balconies will be assessed a $250 cleaning and refreshing fee on their Sail & Sign account. Information on this fee is included in Carnival's ticket contract.

We are hopeful you will see this as an enhancement to your onboard experience. Please know we are committed to providing a safe, clean and healthy environment for all our guests.

We also wanted to let you know our gratuity guidelines will be increasing from $11.50 to $12.00 per person per day with voyages departing October 9, 2014, and onward. Guests who have pre-paid their gratuities as of July 7, 2014, will not be affected by this change.

While gratuities are automatically added to your onboard Sail & Sign account as a convenience, tipping is always at your discretion. Please feel free to adjust, up or down, as you please by visiting Guest Services.

We thank you for your understanding and appreciate your cooperation in adhering to our new smoking policy. Most importantly, we look forward to welcoming you aboard!

Sincerely,

Vicky Rey, CTC

Vice President - Guest Services

We were always forced to pay for Spa level cabins to be in the balcony non-smoking zone, now the whole ship is available without the smoke drift that made so many prior balcony cruises unusable. GREAT DECISION..... Thank you Carnival for listening to us!

The cruise contract also says people can be denied boarding or put off the ship for smuggling and I've never seen anyone here claim that has happened. Highly doubtful that people will be put off the ship for smoking.

Half of the balconies is not half of the ship. Seems people forget there are inside and oceanview cabins as well.

BTW - Many other nationalities cruise Carnival besides Americans and Canadians.

Was the ban on eCig confirmed? I didn't see John H. answer that question on the FB page. If eCig is banned for balconies as well - I guess it will be bye bye Carnival. Other lines ban smoking but allow eCigs on balconies so guess we will just go that direction - or look for alternative vacation ideas (all inclusive, river cruises, etc.)

It is what it is I guess - there are a lot of vacation options out there - so, not really going to worry about it. Will just find the best option for our needs. :D

Yes, currently, Carnival has no distinction between cigarettes, and Ecigs. it is written that way in the policy.

Are they really? Lets do some math.

39% of the rooms on the carnival freedom have balconies, which means only 39% of the people have one. if half of that (19.5%) is dictated for smoking, that means that it is fair, since 80.5% of the staterooms will have a strict no smoking at all, inclusive of the balcony. Take away the Spa decks, and it will drop to around 17% of the cabins will have smoking allowed on the balconies.

Now you will say, but not all smokers will get a balcony. You are correct, however there are many people who do not smoke but cruise with a smoker, so really, more than 18% of the cabins have at least one smoker in the room. Add in the number of people who do not care, and you come out that half the balconies allowing smoking would be a fair number.

It's irreverent though, Carnival has made the decision. Deal with it, or book elsewhere.

So sorry to see the smokers boo a hooing away that you can't sit on your balcony and smoke. That smoke in turns floats up to my balcony and I have to contend with the smokey smell or even worse cigar smell to ruin my sitting on the deck. It's all about me me me!

It is a good thing that they are changing the smoking policy, but e-cigs too? Gosh, I hope not! I can understand them not wanting the horrible smell of cigarette smoke & the rest that comes with it. If smokers still would like to cruise with carnival they can just as easily get an e-cig, instead of smoking cigs, so then it won't bother anyone else etc. I think that would be a huge mistake for Carnival to completely ban them all.

I stand corrected.
