Carnival Cruise Lines To Ban Smoking on Cruise Ship Balconies

I'd expect other cruise lines to follow in the future as well with the balcony smoking policy change.

 

Actually, Carnival is one of the last to arrive at the party. Carnival is no longer the leader. They are the follower in most cases.

well, I just cancelled my next 2 cruise on Carnival, so have at them balconies, your welcome to them.

Booked with RCCL, instead.

I know they have a similar policy, but they also have a indoor smoking lounge "concierge ";) (besides the casino).

Carnival policy requires you to gamble to smoke there.

Not much of a drinker so sitting at the casino bar smoking ( which is only one-half of) would be a waste of time and seat.

May some day cruise w/ them, if they decide to return to the NE, year round.

I just cancelled our November cruise, which was outside of final payment and re-booked a similar cruise on Norwegian for 2 days longer and less money. There are 2 ports we like less, but that's the only difference. Bye-Bye Carnival!!!!

Holland America and NCL are 2 that I know of. Not sure about others.

Princess allows vaping but not smoking on balconies.

Funny...I heard word from Kevin Sheehan that there are no plans to change NCL smoking policy in the future in January this year

FYI: There is a jazz lounge on the Splendor, Conquest class and Triumph class ships that allows smoking. When we were on the Freedom and the Liberty, they were mostly empty. Occasionally, they did karaoke in there.

Wonder if Mr. Heald or the beards might post any statistics as to how many cancellations/non-full ships are being caused by this policy? I doubt it though...RCI hid their loss by saying people weren't spending as much on board.

Casinos on Celebrity are and have been non-smoking, so I think that takes care of that theory.

Or maybe they are enjoying the jump in business and will reconsider.

Ah yes, there are the cigar bars on the Voyager and Freedom class ships (the Connoisseur Club). But that's less than half the ships in the RCI fleet.

Look at all the compromise -suggesting posts in this thread and others - paying an additional fee, booking only cabins at the rear of the ship, or confining smoking cabins to low decks and inside. We've given the inch and remain quite willing to give another few inches to meet somewhere in the middle.

Woah! Hold on I'm a vapor trying quitting the cigs and have always tried to do what's right. Basically this hole thread has gone to the crapper from both sides, things that nobody (in their right mind) would say on the ship. I was just trying to make poster feel less frustrated about taking a cruise because of the bickering.

 

If you want me to come out and say it I will. I will vape as I see fit. I will not be intimidated by the hot air on this board. But at the same side, I haven't been in here throwing that up in their faces. It seems there's quite a few that are doing a fine job of it and handling it better than me. But if I typed what was honestly going on in my head, I'd probably be banned. There's a select few that really would make me feel better to just tell off. They are just way over the top.

Of course he will say that. Just like John H did not publicize the fact they were changing policies. They will change it overnight.

Smokers really should not be concerned about this new policy. For myself I downgraded my next cruise from a balcony to an interior room(saved 600.00). Now instead of having the luxury of smoking on my balcony I will be able to spend all of my time out in the public areas of the deck smoking with everyone. Thanks Carnival

I will no longer book with carnival. I'm sure a lot of folks out there will be happy about that, I truly get it. I only smoke on my balcony not in any approved inside smoking areas, personally I don't like smoke in my face either!! Last year on the Conquest several mornings I found cigarette butts on my deck, one evening I saw two fly off an upper deck!! Thanks to the stupid smokers out there I feel you are as responsible for this decision as are the non smokers! Thank you for letting me vent.

I thought Paradise non-smoking "experiment" failed (at least in part) because they couldn't find enough nonsmoking crew.

 

If anything I think it proves that getting an entire ship to go non-smoking will be impossible, if for any reason because of the crew. Many of the crew hail from counties where smoking is still somewhat popular (compared to the US), and the cruise lines can't afford to lose those employees who do (at least all at once).

 

As one who sailed the Paradise twice, I always thought the reason why it went out of favor was due to never changing its itinerary. The crew told me they loved the non smoking ship and that their contracts were waitlisted to get onto it.

During muster drill, it's stressed over and over not to throw cigarette butts off the ship - don't throw anything off the ship. I'm wondering if that's how the fire on the Star Princess got started. It started on a balcony from a cigarette--possibly being flown back onto a balcony left smoldering then the fire. I mentioned on another thread that 1 man died, several people injured, and 100+ cabins damaged. So, cigarette smoking is a fire hazard on the ship. It matters not if people don't cruise on Carnival/Princess or any ship that has adopted the no smoking policy. It's somewhat of a big worry off of the cruiseline's shoulder. People say they won't cruise again, but I suspect they will because they like the cheap vacation.
