Carnival Cruise Lines To Ban Smoking on Cruise Ship Balconies

The cruise contract also says people can be denied boarding or put off the ship for smuggling and I've never seen anyone here claim that has happened. Highly doubtful that people will be put off the ship for smoking.

 

Back when the Paradise was completely non-smoking (they even prohibited the workers building it from smoking) there were several people put off the ship for smoking. Usually it was teenagers traveling with their parents that bought a pack of cigs in port and lit up at the stern. But some smoked in the room. The families were fined the $250 and put off the ship. On our western Caribbean cruise. One family was put off in Grand Cayman and one was put off in Ocho Rios.

It is a good thing that they are changing the smoking policy, but e-cigs too? Gosh, I hope not! I can understand them not wanting the horrible smell of cigarette smoke & the rest that comes with it. If smokers still would like to cruise with carnival they can just as easily get an e-cig, instead of smoking cigs, so then it won't bother anyone else etc. I think that would be a huge mistake for Carnival to completely ban them all.

I have been "vaped" by an ecig. Young girl about 16 walking through a store sucking on one with flavored vapor. Exhaled a large cloud of Lavender/clove flavored vapor right at me. Vile aroma. Vile person.

My family was planning a trip to Alaska, that would have been 5 rooms. Off to Norwegian or Holland. It is really too bad that some sort of compromise couldn't have been reached. I really can't see how someone smoking while the ship is moving could cause others so much angst. Perhaps while the ship was in port smokers could be told they are not allowed to smoke on their balconies but when the ships moving it is not an issue. Oh well looking forward to a new cruise line.

Are they really? Lets do some math.

 

39% of the rooms on the carnival freedom have balconies, which means only 39% of the people have one. if half of that (19.5%) is dictated for smoking, that means that it is fair, since 80.5% of the staterooms will have a strict no smoking at all, inclusive of the balcony. Take away the Spa decks, and it will drop to around 17% of the cabins will have smoking allowed on the balconies.

 

Now you will say, but not all smokers will get a balcony. You are correct, however there are many people who do not smoke but cruise with a smoker, so really, more than 18% of the cabins have at least one smoker in the room. Add in the number of people who do not care, and you come out that half the balconies allowing smoking would be a fair number.

 

 

It's irreverent though, Carnival has made the decision. Deal with it, or book elsewhere.

I don't know how they (Carnival) expects to determine if a guest has "smoked" an eCig inside their cabin. They are odorless and leave no residue.

There ecig policy is NOT changing. It's always been classified as a cigarette and could/can only be used in smoking sections.

A new cruise line for me too! Since they all seem to have the same policy, might as well sail on a classier line like Royal.......Disney Dream is also a nice ship......great water slide and no need to buy a soda card since I understand soda is included.

Smokers that are canceling or rather saying that they will cancel will not have any perceptible impact on Carnival. This is not Carnival leading the way - this is Carnival going to a policy that most cruise lines already have in place.

I think we just took our last Carnival cruise. Pity, my DH really enjoyed the last two and was discussing for next year.

 

I think Carnival will find they lose more business than gain. Smokers will either go to other lines or do land vacations. Non smokers have lots of choices and will not flock to Carnival just because of the new policy.

 

A compromise of one side of the ship would have worked so well.

I am quite sure that Carnival has done significant studies and focus groups showing that they are losing business to RCL and other lines with more restrictive policies. They NEED to do this to stop the bleeding to the competition.

 

The 'one side of the ship' plan would introduce a lot of complexities in the booking process and would not likely add revenue. In these things, simpler is better.

This news made my day! I think it will draw more non-smoking customers to book on Carnival. If I were a smoker I don't think being able to smoke only in the casino (and very few other places) would be enough to draw me to Carnival. Now if they'd only do away with the all you can guzzle package, maybe we would see less slobbering drunks stumbling all over the place on even the nicer long cruises (i see so many more since this package has been introduced....it's disgusting). Sorry guys, flame away!!!! That's just how I feel

FYI, according to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), 18.1% of all American adults smoke (17.3% for Canadians per Health Canada and Statistics Canada). I think you're asking for too much when you want half the ship reserved for smokers.

 

Actually those statistics were last updated in 2012...The rate has actually estimated to have increased to 23.8% as of 2014

I wouldn't gloat too much if I were you. The public smoking areas still exist and some of those are inside. Carnival didn't do this out of a true concern for your health. They just caved to "industry standards". They won't make the casino non-smoking because it will mean a loss in big revenue.QUOTE]

 

Absolutely correct jma624!!! Carnival's decision was hardly based on their concern for anyone's health.

Currently NCL and HAL for the major lines. Unknown for the minor lines without further research.

well, I just cancelled my next 2 cruise on Carnival, so have at them balconies, your welcome to them.

Booked with RCCL, instead.

I know they have a similar policy, but they also have a indoor smoking lounge "concierge ";) (besides the casino).

Carnival policy requires you to gamble to smoke there.

Not much of a drinker so sitting at the casino bar smoking ( which is only one-half of) would be a waste of time and seat.

May some day cruise w/ them, if they decide to return to the NE, year round.

Smooth sailings all.
