Copenhagen museum(s) advice

Recommended Posts

this will be our second visit to Copenhagen...we arrive on a Sunday and would like to visit a museum (especially if weather is not nice)

we have toured Christianborg palace, and we plan to tour Rosenborg palace on the Monday, and do city walk - since museums are closed. On Tuesday we have an all day tour to Frederiksborg castle, Elsinore Casyle ( Hamlet) , Roskilde Cathedral, and Viking museum

we have walked Stroget, seen Marble Church, little mermaid, etc. Tivoli we plan to visit at night with the lights.

therefore on Sunday, choices would be:

Amalianborg Castle tour ( 1 building, small museum)

David Museum ( Islamic Art)

Glyptotek - (sculptures, art)

I was hoping maybe even to get 2 in..

what would you recommend, 1st choice, 2 nd choice... which is the most unique?

We still want to go back to Nyhavn area, but that could be later after museums close

thanks for any advice.

Two that we enjoyed were:

  1. The Danish Resistance Museum
  2. Carlsberg Brewery Museum

The Resistance Museum is near the Mermaid statue and the Carlsberg Brewery is completely at the other end of town. The Brewery is more an exhibit with some old transport and delivery vehicles and has a great little gift shop and café. The Resistance Museum has some neat exhibits on the role the Danish Resistance played in WWII. Neither is what I'd categorize as a "must see" but both were fun and interesting.

We enjoyed the National Museum. We went mainly to see the cross of Queen Dagmar as she was my grandmother's namesake. Even for a non-Dane, the exhibits are more interesting than you might think, with many artifacts from pre-history to more modern times. I believe it was free, and they have a good gift shop.

thanks! that sounds interesting...I am leaning towards Amalianborg, simply because I can purchase the combo ticket, good for 2 days - and we are planning to see Rosenborg Palace for the next day...

However, from what I have read, Amalianborg will not take that much time, so the National Museum might be a good fit with Amalianborg!

It's being rebuilt. We made the trek there only to find a cleared field and signs saying that it was going to be rebuilt.

Makes my day. Hope they can replace the exhibit material and artifacts.

Yeah it will be rebuilt but there isn't an opening date yet. It was a big fire which burned down the building and damaged a lot of the things. Luckily they managed to save a lot as well. Is was one of my favourite museums in Cph so i'm looking forward to the reopening.
