The Epic ( And It's Crazy Bathroom) vs The Getaway!!...Input Please!!

This video popped into my head when you said this.

Omg, I laughed so hard at that video that (if they didn't already think so) my coworkers now think I'm insane.

OP, I've never been on the Epic and so I probably don't have an opinion worth posting in this thread. I will say this though:

Only you will know if the bathroom situation will bother you. Google more videos; see different angles and cabins. Only you can tell if the discomfort would be worth $700.

I can say for certain I'm glad I'm living (and vacationing) in the days of youtube and Cruise Critic. Because of these resources, I knew enough to talk my husband into the Jade versus the Epic for our trip later this year. I couldn't even begin to imagine the horror, for me personally, if I had walked into that cabin with no clue as to what to expect.

I've been on both, one time each. Besides the toilet and shower set up, what i also didn't like was the sink in the room. It was in the way, you lost that seating area if you wanted to sit and put make up on. I just personally didn't like the whole design. When I was on the Epic last January, it was in desperate need of repairs. If it already went into dry dock, then it's fine, but when we were on the loungers on deck were all frayed, the floors inside were buckled. Putting that aside, I liked the Getaway better. I would spend the extra and go back on the Getaway.

Having sailed the Epic with an upcoming BA cruise, I'm disappointed that the BA doesn't have the split bathroom setup. The Epic's set up worked out great for us since we could both get ready at the same time with more privacy than if everything were crammed into one room. Everybody poops and everybody farts. Big deal.

Funny, but aside from the whole bathroom issue, my next questions was where can I put my makeup on without practically sitting on his lap...I want to like this ship because it sounds like so much fun, but ahhhhhhhh...Decisions decisions. LOL

Again, I do appreciate everyone's comments, they have been very helpful.

Was that this past January you were on board or 2013??

This thread makes me laugh. There are 2 options

1) go out on the balcony

2) close the curtain

3) send the offensive offender to an off-the-beaten-path public restroom on another deck of the ship to do the deed.

I have cruised on the Sun, Dawn, Star, Caribbean Princess, Valor, and others. Noises come from all of the washrooms. I also am amazed that people think their washrooms at home are noise free. They are not. LOL. Get over it.

When I was 10 , I went to Turkey .

The bathroom at our

Alleged hotel was a piece of cement with 2 outlines if feet and a hole in the center . No curtain. Obviously it was a single- story venue.

I believe that I held it for 3 days before I didn't care which one of my cousins heard what.

Sorry- this thread made me nostalgic

For my grandmothers poor hotel- choosing skills - bless her soul.

My wife and I decided we would never sail the Epic again because of the bathroom setup. I heard - but haven't seen it confirmed - that the Epic will be based in Europe full time due to the resistance Americans have to the design.

Noise and the view is exactly as stated in the video, but after extensive testing, we found the ventilation system works well to keep any odors out of the room. A marvel of engineering for sure.

The Epic is $700 cheaper for a reason. And that reason is the bathroom. Otherwise, it is a pretty nice ship, with very good entertainment options and surprisingly good food in the buffet, MDR and the little pub-like restaurant O'Sheehans.

One irritant with the ship for the smoke sensitive is you have to walk through the casino often. I've forgotten the exact deck numbers, but if the casino is on deck 6, and you're on deck 5 aft, to get to deck 5 forward for a show you walk up a floor and through the casino and then down to 5 again. The same thing happens on the floor above the casino. They do a very good job of keeping the air clear in the casino, but we don't like casinos and would normally never venture into it. (Not due to smoke issues; it's just not our thing). I don't know if the Breakway and Getaway are the same.

I know the one at my house isn't noise free.... oh how I wish it was... but nothing a increase in tv volume will not handle. I wish I didn't have the visual of my dear husband doing the do on the loo, but I'm still booked on the Epic and am really looking forward to it! Maybe, I'll hop in the shower so he can see my heiny and I can see him on the pot, LOL. My 14 year old son is in for a rude awakening!

I think I might tape some heavy duty kraft paper from chest down in both the pot and shower to save the traumatic experience for my son!

Have not sailed on the Getaway yet, but will next month. But we have been on the Epic and the Breakaway. Since the Breakaway and the Getaway are sister ships, I will comment based on my experience on the Breakaway pretending it is the Getaway.

I would take the Getaway any day over the Epic. There were so many problems with the Epic that were fixed on the Breakaway/Getaway.

However with that in mind, you should check with NCL on their new smoking policy which will go into effect in November, prior to your cruise. You do not want to book any cruise without reviewing that new policy.

Not sure what problems you're referring to. I've sailed the EPIC 3 times, and the Breakaway twice.... and hands-down the EPIC is a better ship.

Just about everything about it is nicer, and I spoke with several crew who agreed...they just prefer the EPIC. It has an atmosphere of grandeur, whereas the BA has the same venues, only they're all smaller - to create space for the outdoor dining - and it has a more claustrophobia-inducing atmosphere.

It's still a nice ship, and I'm hoping to get onto the GA next year, but I'd vote for EPIC in a contest between them.

And, I echo the poster who said " 3) " send the offender to a public washroom. Heck, we tend to do that anyway - even on ships with regular bathrooms.

Not everyone has or wants a balcony.

It is my belief that this setup is a feature of the balcony cabins, but I haven't stayed in an Inside on the EPIC.

We are going on the Epic for the 3rd time this Christmas. We don't love the bathroom setup, but we live thru it. My boys and husband get dressed by the beds and I get dressed behind the curtain. We have a family rule that if the curtain is closed, no on goes in there. I don't need my boys eyes bleeding if they see the outline of their Mother showering. I bring a spray that I put into the bathroom should there be any smells, but we never really use it. The ventilation is pretty good. We like the Epic and the bathroom wouldn't keep me off the ship. Good luck deciding!

ohhheeemgeeee!

I am new to Norwegian, and have only cruised the Breakaway - but after seeing that video, I know I am never cruising the Epic!!!

No way, no how. That bathroom is a deal breaker, even if it is just DH & I.

Always ;-)

People make such a big deal out of Epic's bathroom setup. It didn't bother me a bit. You get more room to spread out than the typical setup. What's a little sound between friends and/or family??

I agree. These threads are eye-opening. I didn't ever realize that people were so prude/shy/self-conscious, even when behind a frosted glass door and an opaque curtain. It's really not that big of a deal.

I'm pretty sure the configuration is the same on inside cabins, ( saw a YouTube video tour of one)...It's probably even a little worse because of room size and no balcony for a bit more room or escape...BB is a midship regular balcony.

Thanks for the helpful info

Twice on the ship and I never heard or saw anything from my husband or daughter. I can't imagine anyone would sit there and stare, or listen. To each his own I guess.

I was on the Epic in Apr 2013 with my husband. I was a little nervous about the bathrooms at first, but really wanted to try the EPIC. I am very glad we did. Once you get used to the bathrooms they really are not that bad. When my husband was getting ready I was either on the balcony or putting makeup on and not paying attention to him while he was getting ready. When we were not getting ready for dinner/shows and were in the cabin I was usually on the balcony. We are booked for our 2nd cruise on the Epic in Dec and am very excited. I would have liked to try the Getaway but there was too much of a price difference to justify going on the Getaway this cruise.
