Dollars or sterling

Hi all - off on IOS in a couple of weeks. We are from UK off to the Med. What do you advise for tips etc - US dollars, sterling or even euros. Thanks!!

Did you know that standard tips are added to your onboard account now? You can have them charged to your credit card which should convert them back to your currency.

Staff working in the Mediterranean and Western Europe welcome additional tips in euros as it saves them having to exhange USD to Euros using RCI unfavourable rates to spend ashore during port calls.

I used Euros if I had them, if not I used US dollars. But if all you have is Sterling, I thing they will be grateful!

So if I cruise on a Europen cruiseline on a ship, based in the USA for half a year on more, I should pay in Euro of Sterling and not in $?

You should tip in the currency the ship is using.

Why? There are countries in the world where US$ are not readily accepted. If the ship's itinerary goes to these countries and crew members do get time ashore and they do purchase goods/use transport then I am certain they would be glad to have some local currency without having to change $.

Both of you are forgetting that some crew-members send almost all of their money home to their families and do not spend it ashore. That being said I see no problem with tipping in any currency as any tip is better than no tip.

When we cruise in Europe, we use Euro. In America, we use dollars. (except Cuba where dollars are prohibited, there must all use Euro or local currency)

I usually ask them! On cruises out of UK, they often choose sterling, on cruises out of Europe sometimes they'll choose dollars and sometimes Euros. Whatever you give them, they'll be grateful.
