Avoiding smoke on Liberty?

We are looking at various cruises for december, and one we are considering is on Liberty.

My dad's friend was on this ship and mentioned that you have to walk through the casino to get to some places, and also some of the smaller shows/entertainment boarder the casino. - So you get the smoke from the casino.

Is this avoidable? I am allergic to smoke, and also will have my sensitive 7yr old with me. I don't mind walking farther if there is a way to avoid it, but I'd also not want to miss the entertainment because of smoke.

Thoughts?

I believe the only thing forward of the casino is the Showroom which is on 3 levels. This is such a non issue in my opinion because of options.

The Liberty is such a beautiful ship with many positive features and great itineraries.

Go on carnivals website and look at the floor plans. There are numerous ways to get around on the ship without passing through the casino.

I did look, but its very difficult to tell by looking at deck plans how far smoke wafts about. The friend of my dad's who went on the ship isn't allergic to smoke and mentioned it as an issue without us even asking. My dad just asked him what he thought of the ship and he said it was clean, good food, good staff, good activities, but smokey.

The itinerary is one of the reasons we are considering this ship - as well as the timing, and the price (there will be 6 of us going, 5 adults and one kid). Smoke is a BIG issue for me because of my severe allergy (its not a "dislike", its a "I will not be able to breathe" type issues). On Freedom of the Seas it was a big pain in the butt to avoid and even going "around" by going outside, people were always there smoking so was difficult when trying to make it on time to a show or whatever. I will have my grandma so we have to take the elevators instead of the stairs as we usually do too.

Are there any areas that are smokey that I will need to be aware of to avoid? I'd like to figure it out in advance so I don't have to worry about it on board (I'd like to stay healthy so we can have more fun!) :)

Here is a link to all ship's smoking areas. From Carnival.com)

You should be able to avoid all areas unless you go to the Casino.

The entire atrium is between the Casino and the main theatre/showroom.

I just got off of the first cruise on Liberty in which the new smoking policy was put into effect. Smoking is not allowed in any cabin, including the balcony cabins. Deck 10 starboard has been set up as the outdoor smokers area. The other place that constantly has smokers is the casino, located right in the middle of deck 5 Promenade. Even when the casino is closed, active smokers are always in the area.

The Liberty is one of those ships in which it is difficult to get to the aft dining room (Silver Olympian) used for assigned dining. The Galley blocks access on decks 3 and 4. Also, many bars and evening activities are located on deck 5 aft. The Promenade deck is very congested, especially in the evenings as one 'promenades' to/from the dining and entertainment aft to the main showroom up front.. There is usually music on a stage located next to the smoky casino bar. Each night there are several photography stations set up on deck 5 too. A person sensitive to smoke would easily detect it on deck 5 from the Atrium area near the EA Sports Bar all the way past the elevators aft of the casino. The smoke is most highly concentrated on Deck 5, so the other indoor locations are a relative respite from it.

Deck 9 Lido provides forward to aft access through most of the ship. We had a forward cabin on deck 6, so DW and I would stay on our deck to get to the aft elevators/staircase down to the Silver Olympian Dining Room each night. That avoided the crowds and the smoke of Deck 5.

By all means then you should really consider Celebrity which doesn't allow smoke in their casino. For such a life threatening event you should not choose carnival or any of the others that do allow smoking in the casino. Happy sailing.

I just got off the Liberty. The only place that I could smell smoke was in the promenade between the cherries on top and the casino bar. Once past the bar it was fine. I saw several people holding their nose as they walked past.

I was going to suggest the same thing. They must have an area on their ships for smoking though, so that won't work either. Surely there must be some event or area to check out so she'll have to go find it.

I just don't get it. If people know there is casino smoking, stay away from it. Don't make it a big deal just walking by. There are worse smells to deal with on a daily basis.

I get it...some people just love to complain. They think the whole world revolves around them. I don’t smoke and hate the smell but if you want to smoke have at it. I wouldn't even care if someone is smoking on their balcony, as the wind takes the smell away anyway.

Worse is the leftover perfume stench in the elevators. Thats why I take the steps.

OP is looking for information, not criticism. Next time add something positive, or stay out of post.

See? And I beg to differ. The OP is looking to start a war on this forum.

Smoking forums, whether a non-smoker, or smoker, always get heated.

If you don't like, or cannot "tolerate" the smell, stay away from it.

These boards CLEARLY tell you where the smoke is.

OP asked if casino smoke is avoidable. Going one floor up or down to avoid the smoke is answering the question so his response was a lot more useful then yours.

Well, going up one, two or three decks is not an option if you listen to these sensitive folks. The smoke comes up the elevator shafts.

I would think a better bet might be to cross the casino area on deck one, because smoke does not waft downward, although that is not a guarantee.

Perhaps a cruise on a ship that does not allow casino smoking is a better option as an earlier poster suggested.

ddloml - thank you, that was the type of information I was looking for.

boaterette - We do have a Celebrity cruise "on our list" of options, but the cost is more and also we'd have to drive a long way to port, we live right by Canaveral so its a lot easier, the dates are better for us too - coordinating 6 peoples schedules here. Also I have no desire to be IN the casino, I was more interested in avoiding it in general for things like the evening shows and general moving about the ship for activities.

hartsnvt - thank you for the map! I couldn't find it before for some reason.

RuthlessBoss and jackson bernard and KPfromCT - I have zero desire to "start a war", I'm asking because it affects my health. I can't just "hold my nose".

The map shows where one is "allowed" to smoke, but that doesn't tell me where one can smell it in surrounding areas (you know, like having a "peeing section" in the pool - doesn't always contain things)

I agree there are other nasty smells - perfume is gross and gives me a headache, but is annoying, not a health hazard (for me)

Smoke gives me asthma attacks, and if severe can stop breathing. So if we end up on this cruise, I need to plan areas I need to avoid and alternate routes around the ship as needed, I do not mind going up or down floors if need be. That was the entire point of my post.

I don't care if other people smoke, that is not my problem and not my business. - my grandma who is coming with us is a smoker herself.

I just cannot be around it at all and wanted to plan accordingly.

My father is planning/paying for the trip so its ultimatly up to him which ship we end up on, but its looking like this is his top choice due to cost and ease.

I'm wondering if you are thinking it's a bigger deal than it will be. You just cross ship areas one level up or down, other family can tote Grandma to smoking areas. If you had indicated why you were going on this specific cruise, the brunt of comments might have been softer.

The OP was not bashing smoking or smokers. She simply was not able to find a map of the ship and asked for assistance in finding if there was a route to get to shows avoiding the casino. She is not asking anyone to not smoke in the casino ~ she is simply looking for a layout of the ship.

Really makes you wonder about the hateful posters who jump into a thread just to be snide, presumptuous and accusatory. Time to block a couple of them who have nothing of value to contribute.

Finding maps is not difficult. There is internet, so finding one is not difficult.;)

Yet she thought she'd get helpful information from friendly people here instead of going to google and hoping to find what she was looking for. Certainly she made an error in thinking that there'd be nothing but helpful, friendly people.

In other words, she wanted us to do the search and give the answer? As far as regular information, she was given it.
