Pather Posted November 14, 2014 #1 Share Posted November 14, 2014 Planning a Viking River Cruise Paris/Normandy. In 2015, longship available. Is it worth it to pay extra? Are rooms smaller than on the other Viking ships? Thank you.
nana541 Posted November 14, 2014 #2 Share Posted November 14, 2014 Be sure and compare the number of passengers and cabin size vs other lines on same itinerary. And of course cost as in the 2 for 1 deal is actually no deal at all.... Sent from my iPhone using Forums
roomer Posted November 14, 2014 #3 Share Posted November 14, 2014 Planning a Viking River Cruise Paris/Normandy. In 2015, longship available. Is it worth it to pay extra? Are rooms smaller than on the other Viking ships? Thank you. If you are staying in a French Balcony the cabins are just 135 sf. The longships have a unique 'off-set center hallway' so the full verandah cabins are 205 sf, leaving the French Balconies much smaller.
rjscott Posted November 15, 2014 #4 Share Posted November 15, 2014 Yes, some of the itineraries are still using ships other than longships, and they do get good reviews. Becki
Rare Host Jazzbeau Posted November 15, 2014 #5 Share Posted November 15, 2014 Be aware that the longships have lard bottoms, so if there are low water problems they have to stop sailing before all the other ships on the river.
nana541 Posted November 15, 2014 #6 Share Posted November 15, 2014 Just compare the passenger count, stateroom size and pricing on Viking ship vs other lines sailing the same itinerary. That is all we/I am saying. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
nana541 Posted November 15, 2014 #7 Share Posted November 15, 2014 Maybe meant "Hard".... Beats me :) the longboats have been reported as having trouble during times of low water. Other ships still able to navigate while the longboats are dead in the water. Someone else can jump in here anytime :) Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Rare Host Jazzbeau Posted November 16, 2014 #8 Share Posted November 16, 2014 (edited) Euphemisms can be your friend, Di Princess... The Viking Longships have a deeper draft than most other river boats. That's why they get moored while other boats keep sailing. deec Posted November 16, 2014 #9 Share Posted November 16, 2014 I can't figure out WHY viking contaracted to build all the new longships that were engineered with deeper drafts......the rising/shrinking river levels have not changed...always been an issue....what were they thinking....it would be interesting to know HOW many times passengers are affected by river levels. When we were on the Lif this fall our cruise director who was new this season said it had happened 3 times to the Lif ( new ship this spring)....interestingly he said that the crew stayed with the ship but the concierge and cruise director moved with the passengers...He had no insight as to why Viking ordered these boats that have more difficulty than others. Of course he also stated that because of the many Viking Boats on the rivers it is easier to swap with sister ships... I know we were lucky and will tempt the water fates again to take another fantastic river cruise.....but it is a worry.
nana541 Posted November 16, 2014 #10 Share Posted November 16, 2014 Maybe the "longer" boats that Viking is launching (carrying more passengers) simply need a deeper draft as an engineering function? Sent from my iPhone using Forums
