I'm not a big fan of fixed seating or even of the MDR. However, fixed seating has one feature which may ensure it's continuance. Fixed seating serves to regulate traffic flow into the MDR. It's fairly certain that given a choice, most passengers would choose to dine between 1830 and 1930. If all seating were open, huge lines would result at those times. This can be prevented by scheduling a large percentage of passengers at early and late seating times. This works better if those in fixed dining are not allowed to dine at times other than their assigned times.
