Venice Hotel Recommendation for First Timers

I have been searching the threads endlessly so sorry but here is another Venice hotel question. We arrive in Venice at noon the day before our cruise departs (departure following night at 11 pm). There are four of us and we don't have a problem using private water taxi's from the airport to hotel, and from the hotel to port. We will have an afternoon/evening to see Venice, then the following day we would like to check in to the ship around noon but be able to go out and about again until it's time for the ship to sail. We want to see the main attractions but hope to also have time to "get lost in Venice" and see some things off the beaten path. So the big question is - where should we stay that we can see most things but still get back and forth from the port the day we embark. Interested in 3 or 4 star. 5 is probably a bit high end for us.

We stayed at Hotel Colombina. It's a three minute walk to San Marco but away from the crowds. We were only in Venice one night same as you. If you don't mind spending for the water taxi which is $100 euros from airport and I think $80 euros to terminal. You will not regret using water taxi door to door. You can search here on Cc and also TA for comments about this hotel

Thank you! Does the water taxi drop off right at hotel? If not, how long of a walk would you say?

We sailed out of Venice for the first time last year, and stayed at the Hotel Moresco. We absolutely loved it. We had a lovely room with a beautiful view of the canal, in a quiet neighborhood, and the staff was fantastic. The breakfast was lovely, with cold options on a buffet, and eggs cooked to order from the server.

We took a water taxi from the airport, and it was a fabulous way to experience Venice for the first time. And it was only a short walk with one bridge to crossover, to get to the people mover, and then a short ride to the cruise terminal.

We would highly recommend the Hotel Moresco.

Can reccomend the Westin Europa, dine overlooking (by the side of) the Canal. Wonderful ambience in the evening. :D

We stayed at the Hotel Olimpia for one night before a cruise. The hotel was easy and inexpensive to reach from the airport via the ATVO bus. We only had to walk across one small bridge with our luggage. It is located close to the water bus stop for easy travel to the major sites. We were very pleased with the room, the price, and the friendliness of the staff. There was free wifi and a wonderful breakfast. It was a treat to eat breakfast in the beautiful courtyard. Because it is in the Piazzale Roma, it was close to the port. We took the People Mover to the ship. After we boarded and ate lunch, we went back into Venice for several hours.

  • 3 weeks later...

Check out the B&B 3749 Ponte Chiodo. We stayed there two nights, pre-cruise. It is in a quiet neighborhood location with lots of good nearby dining opportunities. It is easy to get to using the airport water taxi - leaves the airport property and drops you about 4 city blocks from the B&B. It is right on top of a canal and most rooms are right over the canal - if you dropped something it would land in the water. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and plan to stay there again in 2016.

I have a friend who likes to stay at the Ca' Doge hotel, which is 3 euro bus from airport and Free bus to the ship.

We liked Ca' Angeli a B&B on the Grand Canal near Rialto and Accademia. It was formerly the home of an architect to the Doge and is full of antiques. Great breakfast and friendly service.

Highly rated on trip advisor. Commisario Brunetti lives nearby. There was construction on the adjacent Palazzo 2 yrs. ago. Check first to see if it's finished.

We just stayed at the Londra Palace. Fabulous. Great staff. A bit of a splurge but Venice is a splurge. 3 minutes to St Mark's. Water taxi drops you 20 yards from the entrance and no bridges to cross. Londrapalace.com. Visit their web site and follow the link at the bottom to a live web cam on the hotel roof. It will get you in the mood for Venice.

Anything good enough for Commisario Brunetti is good enough for me! I love this!!

Ca' Angeli looks nice and the price is reasonable for what it looks like. Their website makes no mention of how you get there from the airport or to the plaza by the cruise terminal. Can you share any insight?

It's a 5 min stroll from the S. Silvestro vaporetto stop. The route is a bit convoluted. I will post details later but google maps is down at the moment. They have a water taxi dock 50 feet from the front door. The photo is the Grand canal towards Rialto from their dock. The hotel is on the upper 2 floors of the palazzo. There is an elevator.

The best way is water taxi right to a dock 50 feet from their door.

If you must take public transportation, take the No 1 from P. de Roma to S. Silvestro. Walk straight ahead through the passageway and follow the yellow signs for 'Alla Ferrovia' Don't worry that some of the streets are tiny.

You will cross a bridge (no stairs) called Ponte dela Madonetta. You will be on Calle dei Meloni. Just after Bar Rizzardini turn left on Calle del Forno, then right on Calle del Traghetto dela Madonetta and immediately left toward the Grand canal.

Ca Angeli is no.1434 on the right behind a black gate with vertical bars.

screen shots from google earth street view show the sign for the bar, the embroidery shop and the front gate. Have fun.

We stayed at albergo marin hotel. It's tucked away surrounded by residential and quiet at night. A laundry mat is 2 doors down. It's about a 10 min walk from the pizzale roma crossing only 2 small bridges. It's a small but cozy place. I know there are nicer hotels however I liked the location alot. You can explore up to Rialto the day you arrive and st marks area the next day after you cruise check in.

Leaving for the cruise terminal, again 10 min walk to the people mover and from there another 5 min walk where we dropped our luggage. within 15 min, we had our cruise cards, etc... from there you can head out to venice for the day. (our ship departed at 11pm as well)

Depending on your time of travel, some hotels may not even take a 1 night reservation.

For a first timer, I'd stay in the Piazzale Roma area. There are a number of hotels in that area. Making it easy to get to the cruise terminal, then back to Venice proper for sightseeing.

We chose Ca' Doge right in Piazzale Roma, but across the plaza is Hotel Chiara. Level parking lot, bus & taxi to/from the hotel, vaporetto office & stop. Piazzale Roma is the transportation hub for Venice.

Have fun planning, then taking your trip!
