Question about bringing cash

If you like to use cash but are uncomfortable carrying large amounts there are several options to get cash over the course of the cruise. There are ATM's onboard and at ports (depending on nationality and trustworthiness of port) - be sure to know up front what the fees are. For fee-free, you can move cash from your debit card onto your casino card and then cash out. I believe you can still cash personal checks at the purser's desk with proper ID.

We have found very little need for large amounts of cash. Virtually everything on board goes on the S & S. In port, almost all businesses take credit or debit cards, and there's no hassle of having to exchange currency or getting back a lot of change in local monies. We take aboard $50-$100 in small bills for tips and small expenditures in port; we keep it in the safe (have never had trouble with anything left in the safe), taking with us in ports just what we think we need plus a small cushion. We almost always end of having most of it left at the end of the cruise

Hope this helps.

we take $1000 cash on cruise in various bills of 20s, 10s, 5s, 1s. we leave a few in 100s

this is what i do....

I make an excursion envelope per port. on the outside, i label what port, name of excursion, and balance left to pay. inside, i put that balance and seal it up. that way, its not all mixed in with our spending money. its already sorted out and easy to access. for example, this is what we had for our last cruise

  • Sunset Beach, Montego Bay: $80
  • Captain Marvin's, Grand Caymans: $80
  • Mr Sancho’s, Cozumel: $100

Then we take off ship $200 spending cash in each port.

We usually take larger amounts of cash than that and never had a problem with it. In port, we only use cash and I like $100-$150 per port, depending on what we do. Like most others have said, I like to have smaller bills. Of course that makes it look like you have even more money!

When I arrive, I split it amount different envelopes so that I do not overspend. If we have extra after that port, I redistribute it among other envelopes.

We usually take $600-700 or so, but it depends on the cruise. I love the separate envelope idea, I'll use that on our upcoming cruise.

I don't even carry a debit away from home...just cash and one credit card in case I see something spendy I really want.

I wish I had 20K to stash in the safe!

Hi All,

I'm sailing on the breeze next month and I have a question about carrying cash. My fiancee and I were thinking about carrying around 200.00 each in cash, but I feel like that wouldn't be too safe.

My question is, how much cash do you usually carry on a cruise, if any and do you usually feel comfortable leaving money in the room safe?

I walk around with more than that on me all the time, it never sees the inside of the safe. Your bigger concern once you get on the ship would be losing it instead of it being taken, it is almost unheard of for theft crimes to be reported on any of the ships.

We use reloadable Visa and MasterCard gift cards. We even ask for them as gifts from family. That way, we aren't worried about taking a debit card, we can get cash at the ATM and we can load them with as much or as little as we want. We keep the spares in the safe and are comfortable taking them on excursions. We also take small bills for tips, but not much more. We aren't big gamblers or drinkers, so that helps limit our expenditures.

I normally take $4000-$5000 for the casino. A few times I have had up to $20,000 in the safe. I won some more and split it up between my room and my mom's room safe. Never had anything come up short from the safe.

Seriously, I am a gambler too. Why not have the casino cash out into your account? Next time you go to the casino, take out a marker. Why carry that much cash, senseless.
