Travellers cheques in Canardian $ cashed onboard?

During my search in CC threads I have got conflicting answers whether or not Celebrity will cash travellers cheques for you onboard.

My case is this: we'll be sailing on "Summit" in the near future , going to Canada. After I found traveller cheques in Canadian $ in a cupboard I dusted them off and intend to use them this time. As I'm not sure if bank tellers, shops etc. will even recognize that kind of prehistoric money :D I wanted to cash them in at the front desk when we have arrived in Canadian waters.

I know of course about credit cards and ATM's, but I wanted to get rid of that kind of paper cash before the dust settles on them again...

I'm sure a bank in Quebec will help us out, but we'll arrive in Quebec on a Sunday...

Until you posted the apology, I didn't even notice it. And I am a "Canardian"! :)

 

My understanding is the the ship will be happy to cash your travellers cheques. You could possibly also cash them at one of the currency exchange shops at the airport, but probably with a charge.

Suggest you use them before you leave. They are an endangered species and American Express no longer issues them. You might well find the answer is no. Go to your bank at home and try to cash them before you leave. Most shops and even banks will not accept them in any currency flavour!

We have some UD dollar cheques which I bring as an emergency back up but had NO idea that they're no longer being issued.

 

With this warning I'll cash them at our local bank.

 

To the original poster, our dollar is horrendously low against yours with rumours of a further decline. I'd unload them ASAP. But at any place other than a bank, you'll probably be charged. Some banks are open on Sundays, but you'd probably waste too much time finding one near the port.

 

I just noticed you're from Europe. Our dollar is low against the Euro too but not as low as against the US dollar.

 

MAYBE the front desk would cash them, but it's my impression they only deal in US currency and other currencies are available from the ship's ATM. I stand to be corrected on this.

As a back up those of us in the US are told to carry a couple hundred $$$ in $20 bills. When I go to Europe I always have a 10 pound note in my wallet and say 100 Euros in $20Euro notes. Same for Australia.

 

On Celebrity you can always get $USD at the ATM in the casino and on European/Med cruises you can usually get Euros from the ATM near the Customer Service desk.

The exchange rate onboard is about 5% worse than any other place. Even the airport would be a much better place to get your money exchanged.

Thank you for your answers. I just wanted to get rid of these fossilized bits of paper we still have from years ago. It's also the reason why I didn't want to use an ATM machine to get $. The problem is not how to get cash at all but using those dratted traveller cheques before the dust settles on them again and I have to plan another journey to Canada. (have to?? No, THAT would be a joy... ;))

As you noticed, I'm from Europe, so the best idea for me seemed to be to cash my travellers cheques in Canada. At any banks at home they would have to be re-converted to Euros which makes absolutely no sense.

So I'll ask about the conditions at the front desk and/or try to find a bank in Quebec on Monday. And as I have absolutely forgotten at which rate the cheques were bought so many years ago I won't bother about charges...
