WIFI when Docked at a Port

Does Princess Ships turn off the ships WIFI Internet Access when in Port? Is the Intranet still active?

You can use princess' wifi without signing in -- this will give you

access to the onboard intranet. There is no INTERNET access

from the shipboard wifi, without signing in.

 

If you are at terminal 2 -- you can go outside under the portico,

and there is broward county wifi. (not strong enough to reach

onto the ship) The ssid is BCFREE, or something like that.

 

Also, inside the convention center. If there is an event,

you can go inside the lobby.

 

If you are at berth 21, you need to go across the street to

the holland america terminal for berth 23, and in the lobby

area outside security, there is broward county wifi.

Just look for a cluster of crew.

 

There my be wifi in the terminal for berth 21 now, but there

wasn't the last time I was there.

 

But, once you go outside to find free wifi, in most cases, you could

have just used mobile-data without the effort.

WiFi on the ship is different than the cell phone service. The WiFi is always on or should be. If not it is broken for some reason. The cell tower on the ship is required by international law to turn off while within 12 miles of shore (in other words in territorial waters as opposed to the open sea). Now quality of the WiFi is another matter all together. In port watch the crew carrying laptops. They know where the free WiFi is located. Follow them or ask them where to go.

The ship's cell tower is required to be off when the ship can received a

land based signal. Some installations (all?) have an antenna that sniffs

for a land signal and turns of the ship service.

 

But, this has nothing to do with satellite internet service which is offered

both at sea and in port. (with the exception of places like Japan)

If you're ever docked at Juneau, Ak...

If you're ship is docked close to the city library, you can sit on the stern of the ship and actually access their Wifi....one of the few spots I have ever been successful at doing that, without leaving the ship....:cool:
