On our last cruise (Oasis, 2015), RCL was offering OBC purchased ahead of time at par. Par! At the time, the dollar was about 78 cents or so, so it was like getting 30% off. IIRC, one person in the thread at that time posted how he had purchased several thousand dollars of OBC, and after withdrawing it from his Casino Cash Account, he basically got his cruise for free.

 

Any idea what they're charging on OBC purchases these days?

It was a great deal, but it was at a 10% exchange rate not at par. They stopped it in January of 2015 although many of us had already purchased OBC for sailings far betond that date.

 

There were many that I read of that bought a thousand or two and withdrew some or all of it to use for shore excirsions or on board purchases. In order to end up paying for the cruise they would have had to buy over $10,000 worth of OBC. Not sure that it was feasible to cash in that much on board as they were limiting people to a $500 per day withdrawal

 

Last I checked they were now charging 1.40 for OBC.
