Boston Hotel recommendation

We are taking a cruise from Boston and getting ready to book a hotel as we heard that it might be hard due to planned events in Oct. We would be arriving on Oct. 20 for a 2 night stay. We were considering around the seaport area. Any recommendation for hotels and is it close to the cruise terminal?? any sightseeing in the area or close to downtown. Any help or recommendation would be appreciated.

Boston hotels are expensive, so hotel price is going to drive your choice of hotel. What is your hotel budget? Do you have a car or are you flying in? How many people? Are you willing to book a nonrefundable hotel?

There are four hotels in the Seaport area - the Westin Convention Center, the Seaport, the Renaissance, and Residence Inn. These are the closest hotels to the pier. All are pricey and close to the Silver Line T transportation, which will take you to the port, airport, and downtown. However, Boston is a small city and being close to the port should not be your primary consideration. For a 2 night stay, many folks prefer the Back Bay Area because of the restaurants, services, shopping, and general evening activities.

October 20th is right before Head of the Charles. I would find something then book quickly.

Absolutely. Booking a hotel now is a necessity.

The OP is setting sail on what is billed as a "48-Day Atlantic Adventurer" sailing from Boston to Newport, New York, Fort Lauderdale, and then to Europe all the way to Italy and Greece, and back to Fort Lauderdale. Wow!

A lot depends on what they want to do in Boston and how much they are willing to spend on a hotel. IMO there's no reason to stay in the Seaport area just to be close to the pier. Other areas should be considered.

Yes you are correct, we are indeed booked on the 48 day Atlantic Adventurer, we are planning on flying to Boston on Oct. 20 and staying overnight for 2 nights. Since it has been years since we have been to Boston, we wanted to take advantage and enjoy the sights. Our budget is fairly open but our max would be $400.00 US a day, considering the exchange rate at the moment it would cost us about $500. a Day Cdn. Do you think we can get a hotel close to the port terminal or downtown for that amount. Thanking you all in advance for your recommendation. We do not intend on renting a vehicle.... So looking forward to seeing Boston again.... Can you recommend any hotels in the Back Bay area then, if you think it would be better for us, we are 2 females travelling together.... so would like somewhere safe.

That's a healthy realistic budget for Boston. You can get a very nice hotel for about $400/night tax included in any area of downtown Boston. It's a city, so you always have to be aware of your surroundings, but safety is not a big concern during normal hours for those of us who live in the area. I worked downtown for many years and occasionally kept some very late night hours and never had any problems or concerns.

The Back Bay Hilton is above your price point for those dates. I would look at the following hotels:

Seaport Hotel - waterfront area nearest the airport and the Cruiseport. Next to the Silver Line T station, which means you can get there for free on the Silver Line from the airport if you can manage your luggage for a very short "rolling" distance.

Millenium Hotel - located right at the Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall area.

Langham Hotel - located at Post Office Square several blocks from both Faneuil Hall and Downtown Crossing

Hyatt Hotel - Downtown Crossing a block from the Downtown Crossing T stop entrance on Chauncy Street

Revere Hotel - eastern edge of Back Bay near the Boston Common - geat offers for prepaying

You have to throw the following considerations into the mix:

1). Transportation costs from the airport - about a $35 cab ride from the airport and $20-25 to the port except for the Seaport Hotel which would be a $20-25 cab ride from the airport and $10 to the port. Cab costs can be substantially reduced by taking the free Silver Line from the airport to South Station and then a cab to your hotel.

2). Possible discounts for being seniors or AAA/CAA members

3). Discounts for prepaying your hotel

4). Sightseeing plans in Boston - what are you actually planning to do?

5). There is no perfect location to stay in Boston. Wherever you are, you will likely want to go somewhere else. It's a small city and the T subway offers connections between most of the downtown destinations. http://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/subway/

Do some research and post back with more questions

Thank you so very much Carol for your response and suggestions, we will certainly investigate those hotels. We had googled a few places thus the reason we realized just how expensive accommodations were, another reason why we decided to curtail our stay there to only 2 nights. We will look at all these places and hopefully we can find one that we could cancel if need be since we are 9 months out............. I will certainly take advantage of your very kind offer and come back with questions if I have any or will let you know what we booked.... will probably do that after the holidays, once we also look at flights. Thanks again.

This is a lovely hotel, but.....it is located right at the airport and has no nearby services and restaurants and is not particularly convenient to access downtown Boston except by water taxi, which is about $20 round trip. To get to the T you have to take the hotel shuttle back to an airport terminal to pick up the Silver Line or pick up the free shuttle to the Blue Line T stop.

This hotel would be fine for just one night, but IMO not the best as a base to run around and sightsee all day in downtown Boston. Its counterpart the Hyatt Regency at Downtown Crossing is much better situated.

Checking to find a hotel that we can cancel if need be as we are 10 months out..... but we want to book something now....

Could you tell me what you plan to do in Boston for sightseeing? Any other details would be important like dining or shopping.

just walk around, might book a sightseeing tour of the city, not big shoppers, out to diner, get some wine to bring on the ship. Not sure for flights yet or when we would arrive as it is too early to book our flights yet.

The Hyatt Regency is much better located for just walking around due to its central location with access to Boston Common, the Freedom Trail, and Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market.

The Renaissance is in the Waterfront District, which is a much newer area of office buildings, a few hotels, and the convention center. It now has a selection of restaurants, but no stores or services and IMO not very much charm. There are no historical sites in this neighborhood.
