We are on the 10 day Canada/New England Discovery Cruise Boston to Montreal Aug 24. Our first stop is Portland. Does anyone know where the ship , Rotterdam, will dock? Also, has anyone taken the tours from Discovery Portland? I am concerned about the walk to the tour. Any advice would be appreciated.

Your cruise ship docks at the Ocean Gateway, Pier 2, which on the land side of the harbor puts it at the intersection of Hancock St and Thames St.

According to the Portland Discovery website, it is about a 15 minute walk along the waterfront (on Commercial St) to the tour departure point. The walk would be level and on paved surfaces. HTH

While Commercial Street is "level" being landfill between previous piers, Portland tends to play up the rustic atmosphere, so many of the sidewalks are either brick or cobblestone. And Maine winters play heck with brick and cobble sidewalks. I would say it's not a walk that would prohibit someone with a mild mobility issue, but everyone should be aware of tripping hazards along the way. Walks up the hill into the Old Port area encounter a lot more "wavy" sidewalks.

You'll have more problems negotiating the people and vendors on the sidewalk than anything else! The sidewalk from where the ship docks to the pier the tour company is on is very good. I walk it often. When you get out to the street take a left... stay on that side of the street. Portland Discovery is on the water side of Commercial Street.

Portland is a very nice city. We enjoyed our port days there so much, our friends and we later booked to travel there for the weekend and truly enjoyed our weekend. :)

The city did a good job with renovations and rehabs in the areas near the harbor.
