Dining Room question

Some good friends of ours are doing a cruise on RC in April. (Not sure of the ship though). They have been told that they cannot wear any form of shorts to the dining room, even if it were shorts outfits (men as well as ladies). We have never cruises RC, but have cruised on several other cruise lines and as long as your clothes are clean and respectable, they allow shorts sets in the dining room. (except on formal nights, of course).

So, my question is, can one wear shorts and shorts outfits to the dining room, or may each ship set their own policy?

The policy is no shorts and there's usually a sign at the entrance of the MDR saying so - whether that is enforced, depends on the ship.

I'll admit to being one of those "sloppy people who wore shorts to dinner." It wasn't my plan to wear them, but our itinerary was jam packed and we had little time in between getting back on the ship and going to dinner, and one night towards the end of the cruise I was so tired and tried resisting having to eat in the dining room; I just wanted to go to the buffet and get what I wanted to eat, spend 30 minutes at dinner and then go rest. But my group wouldn't let me, they love the dining room and they wanted to dress for it and spend another 2 hours of the day in front of food, so I relented and let them drag me there, but I was still wearing my shorts, and I was too tired to care and secretly hoped they'd kick me out of the dining room and send me to the windjammer where I wanted to be, but they let me right in and didn't say a word. To my shorts' credit, they were nice white linen shorts, and I had on a nice top, and I am a female, so maybe it looked like a nice outfit, who knows, but honestly, I really don't think they would have cared who showed up in shorts (frankly I wouldn't have cared either even though I wouldn't normally wear shorts in there myself).

 

Another side note- this was on the Adventure, southern route. I think this route is a lot more laid back and far less people are concerned with dress code on that route, so it might be harder to get away with on one of the other ships.

For what it's worth- we were on the Oasis last June and a girl (I say girl because she was younger then me, probably in her mid 20s) walked in with cut off, holey jean shorts and flip flops. The people working there didn't bat an eye and say her. Everyone was watching to see what they'd do lol

They will let you in with shorts if overall you look neat. The even let my wife in the Windjammer once with bare feet when she explained her feet were swollen (true) and couldn't wear shoes. But otherwise she looked well dressed.

As others have said the official policy is no shorts. But most of the time the staff will not question guests, and if they do is the guest goes on offense, they staff just fold.

 

Thant said I do believe you should follow the dress codes. Not for the cruise lines but to show respect to the guests.

On Grandeur last year they did enforce the no shorts at dinner policy. It's hit or miss on enforcement but it is a rule. :)

 

 

Again I think it depends upon the passenger and how they react to the request by staff. If you show up in shorts and they say leave and you do, then they are not allowed. But if you do not comply with the staff, for whatever reason I do not see them using force to remove you.

 

It comes down to what type of person are you and are you required to follow this rule. Depending upon how and when you paid you may or may not be covered by the terms of the cruise contract. So if you want to wear shorts and you defend yourself I see Royal folding every single time.

 

I'm not saying I agree with wearing shorts, I think for the respect of other passengers you should follow the dress code.

Not quite understanding this, what does how and when you pay have any correlation to wearing shorts in the dining room? Could you please explain?

I would explain but then Royal could correct the problem within the system and close this loop hole. Since it is to my benefit not to allow this to happen I will just say talk to a contract law lawyer.

Note also that the "no shorts" request by he cruise line applies only to dinner in the Main Dining Room. No problem with shorts at breakfast and lunch.

 

There was no sign at the door last week on oasis and people with shorts were escorted to tables on formal night as well as other nights.
