New Cruisers here! We signed up for anytime dining, which I THINK I understand as it relates to dinner. However, what about breakfast & lunch? Can we eat those meals for free, anywhere we like?

All meals are free except for specialty restaurants. There is a charge for cocktails and specialty coffees .

Yes, you can eat breakfast and lunch at the location of your choice, any time that location is open. Check the Patter for times. Food, other than specialty dining, is included in your cruise fare. Beverages may have charges, depending on what you select.

Anytime dining refers to dinner only. The main difference between Anytime and fixed seating is the time you eat. Same menu, same dress code. It's "open" seating which means that you walk up, tell the Head Waiter whether you want a table for tow or will share, and then you wait to be seated. Like any popular restaurant, there are often wait times. With Traditional/fixed seating you are assigned to a table and time, and you just walk in and sit down. You have the same waitstaff every night.

 

Breakfast is in the dining room and is open seating. It's usually until 9:30am. The buffet is open continuously from 5:30am until 11pm.

 

Lunch in the dining room is only on sea days and is open from Noon-1:30am. There's also room service available 24/7. If your ship has an International Cafe, it's open 24/7 and has muffins, pastries, breakfast sandwiches, salads, etc. There's a grill near the pool with hot dogs and hamburgers. There's a pizza place for pizza. If your ships has an Alfredo's, it offers full personal pizza pies.

 

All of these are included in your cruise fare.

You can have breakfast and lunch in the main dining room as well as at the buffet. On sea days we enjoy the main dining room. The buffet works when we are in port and have planned excursions.

You don't have to worry about having meals for free. You can easily find the outlets once onboard.

Just got off Island in Vancouver and Main Dining Room breakfast ended at 9 am, so check your "Patter". On certain port days it may also be different.

 

We found we preferred Horizon Court for all meals due to the poor service in the MDR. Except that you can't get real ice cream in Horizon Court!

 

If you like ice cream, be sure to at least go to the MDR for dessert.

 

If you need coffee early, use room service.

On the Star P., it ends at 0930 on sea days. Much earlier on port or disembarkation days. 0900 on the port day in Victoria and, IIRC, 0800 or 0830 on disembarkation day in Vancouver (last time you can be seated). As mentioned above check carefully.

 

Some people were turned away at 0907 on the Victoria port day and said, "Well, I guess we'll have to head to the troughs".

 

FWIW, long lines for lunch on sea days on a full ship on a short repo run.

Just got off the island and the info here is good. Dont try to go at peak times. We stood in long lines for anytime dining and staff recommended we make a reservation in the future. The line tends to move at variable speeds, and you will do better if you are willing to share a table. One night, we were told to go to the other dining room.

Just got off the Island too and there is an Alfredo's onboard. It's open for lunch in the Sabitini's restaurant. Don't miss it...the pizza is great! Also, be on the lookout for the Alaskan seafood specialties offered at the Bar and Grill. They were served at lunch the day before we docked at Ketichan, Juneau and Skagway. So good! Also the Alaskan seafood buffet served in the Horizon court was terrific. As you can tell, I really enjoyed the food!

On our recent Panama cruise we only once had to wait (10 minutes) for ATD. Service in the MDR was superb: friendly staff and good food. However, some of the wait staff did mention that many US cruisers wanted to eat extremely early, and that did cause some problems. The European wait staff were always somewhat bemused by this 5:15 eating frenzy when we mentioned how empty the dining room was at 8:30.

Agree with wowzz, our experience on the Island in February was that we went for ATD at around 8pm and never had to wait. Also agree that food and service were great.

You are absolutely correct! Her response was actually not spot on, as breakfast is only served in the dining room till 9:00 on port days.

We never waited more than a few minutes for ATD either. The first night was pretty crazy but they took groups of 8 from the line to the MDR so that alleviated the wait situation. We had terrific waiters and really good food too!
