My First Trip Report! Freedom of the Seas Western 04/24/2016

Recommended Posts

This is my first trip report on Cruise Critic, so please bear with me! I spent hours on the forums before we departed, not only did I really enjoy reading people’s reviews but I found the insight and tips invaluable when planning our own trip. So with that said hopefully a few of you will find this interesting / helpful too :)

So a little bit of background, I’m 28 and this was my third cruise, although the first with RCI, my other two have been with Carnival and so I can’t help but make this whole report a little bit of a comparison. My first cruise I travelled with my mum but the last two have been with my boyfriend Lee who is 33. We booked only about 12 weeks out and selected the western itinerary on Freedom of the Seas, the main reason being Lee hadn’t visited any of the ports before and I had only visited one. We weren’t too fussy about which line or which ship, more focused on the ports and the fact that we needed to sail out of Port Canaveral for convenience seeing as we had a week in Orlando planned post cruise. The BOGOHP offer and the free select drinks packages also didn’t hurt! :D

That said once we booked and I started doing some more research on Freedom I got really excited about everything she had to offer being the biggest ship we have been on yet and also on trying out RCI. My parents are avid cruisers, now loyal to Celebrity, but have been on plenty of RCI ships and were quick to mention how RCI would be a bit of an ‘upgrade’ from Carnival and at that point I guess I raised the bar of my expectations a little. These expectations might have clouded my judgement a little but I’m going to go ahead and throw in a big spoiler straight away… although pretty comparable I have to say in my opinion Carnival comes out on top for me and I’d definitely consider them over RCI in the future. That said we still had an amazing time on FoS and I wouldn’t have changed a thing about the holiday.

So on with the report. We arrived the Saturday before in Orlando and hired a car to drive to the coast, this was so cheap I think about $39 with budget and we were able to return it and get their free shuttle to the port the next day. We had decided to visit Meritt Island Wildlife Refuge that day as it was the port and it was definitely a great place to kill a few hours. We saw a ton of birds, some alligators and were even lucky enough to see manatees. That night we stayed at the La Quinta Inn in Cocoa Beach which was fine, clean and reasonably priced and only about a 10 minute drive from the rental car office and the port.

Embarkation day to follow…

Oops I forgot to I didn’t save my cruise compasses (sorry!) but if anyone has any specific questions I will try and answer them. Also I haven’t yet sorted my photos so not sure I’ll upload many pictures but again if anyone wants anything specific I did take a heck of a lot of pictures of the ship!

I woke up at the crack of dawn  4am, curse jet lag, so killed time reading until about 7 when I decided it was a reasonable time to go for a quick run. After that we grabbed a coffee from the hotel (there was free breakfast but it did NOT look appetising) and packed up. I wanted to check out the 24 hour giant Ron Jon shop by the shore and we had aimed to return the car about 10am… anyway we ended up getting too distracted in the shop and despite not even buying anything (still upset we didn’t buy those inflatable flamingo cup holders for our hot tub even now!) we didn’t make it to Budget until after 10.30. It looked like total chaos but it seemed that was mostly with the people returning from the previous weeks cruises and gave us a fearful insight into what we could expect on our return in a weeks’ time. We actually got straight on a shuttle and were on our way in minutes! :)

Arriving at the terminal the porters took our bags and the whole embarkation was a breeze  There were no lines at security and we only queued for a little to collect our Sea Passes, we had filled out all the forms online. I’d say it was about 30minutes from Budget to actually being on the ship! As we were walking on I upgraded my free select drinks package to the premium package, which cost $10 per day plus gratuity. Lee was happy enough to stick with the select but yes we were naughty and he had the occasional iced cocktail off my package – it just wasn’t worth upgrading them both as we wouldn’t have got the use.

Walking on board we got straight in the forward elevator and headed up to the pool deck. Which brought us out in the solarium and we got our first drinks at the bar here, strawberry margarita for me and a corona for Lee. They never had big lists of the drinks available at the pool bars but if you could describe it then they would make it so might be worth looking up the ingredients if you want specific cocktails during the day. They did have a selection of about 10 different beers though and Lee was happy he could get Peroni, Stella, Heineken, Red Stripe, Corona etc not just the American beers. In fact I’m going to say that there was maybe a better selection than what there was on the Carnival Liberty when we went in 2013. Point there to RCI I guess :)

The adults pool with its fancy deck chairs can be kind of shaded so we headed through to the larger main pool and sat at a table in the sun for a couple of drinks. The main pool area has two pools and 3 hot tubs! Although the 2 hot tubs in the adult’s area although enclosed hang out over the side of the ship which is pretty cool. The adults pool also had a bar across it with stools cemented in which was a cool place to sit under the bridge and have a drink in the water (I’m sorry I know this would be so much easier to describe with photos!).

After a couple of drinks we headed aft to check out the Windjammer. We walked through an area as big as the solarium area which was dedicated to a splash park on the way. Now I’m all for keeping kids busy but this area takes up A LOT of space and I’ve got to say the times I passed through I only ever saw a couple of kids using the splash park. The kids were always right next door in the pools in the main area. I think RCI could have used this space on freedom much better. Now on Carnival the buffet restaurant is usually in the middle of the ship, between the main pools and the adult’s only area. I much prefer this set up. On carnival if you fancy a quick snack or a slice of pizza you can just go grab one, on RCI it’s more of a conscious effort to go and have a sit down meal. And you definitely are unlikely to head 6 floors down to grab pizza from Sorento’s on the promenade in your beach cover-up…. Although if you did do that it would mean you found the pizza a Sorrento’s edible haha… more on that later!

Overall I was impressed with the WJ – food, service, presentation, it was all very good. For lunch I only ever ate salad (LOVE a salad bar and for whatever reason you just don’t see them in the UK!) but Lee had some of the Chinese food and said the burgers were ok too. I liked that you could get flavoured water as well as the customary iced tea and water for free although we had the free soda package so mostly used the freestyle machines in here (why why why are there not more of these machine bout the ship!!).

After lunch the rooms were open, about 1.30 although I’m not sure they actually announced this, we just knew they would be – thanks cruise critic :D ! We had booked an inside right in the middle of the ship on floor 9, I think it was 9593. Anyway, it was bigger than the cabin we had on the Carnival Liberty, point to RCI. It had a table and mini sofa and loads of storage space. The beds had a foam topper on and we found them comfy. At night the room was silent and we didn’t hear a single sound from the rooms next door or the corridor, we didn’t really spend any time in the room during the day accept to shower and change for the evening. We changed into our swimwear which we had in our hand luggage and headed up to the adults pool which is where we spent the next few hours until we had to go to our muster stations. Afterwards we went to explore around the ship. If you haven’t been on a ship with a promenade deck before they certainly are impressive! I can’t believe anyone wants a room about it though, I love people watching as much as the next person but wow it must be noisy in those rooms, sometimes the music on the promenade deck would go on pretty late.

After we got ready for dinner (we had MTD) I demanded we head to the Olive and Twist bar for a pre-dinner drink. Now on Carnival ships they have the Alchemy bars which are specialist cocktail bars and they have an amazing range of cocktails. If you tell the bartenders a flavour you like, I have a penchant for lychees, they will make you a drink in that flavour. Despite the name Olive & Twist was not a specialist cocktail bar, nor did it even have a cocktail menu. 1 point to Carnival.

Now for the 1 major disappointment of the cruise; the food in the main dining room. As part of MTD we ate on deck 5 and the first night we were given a pretty good table overlooking down to floor 3, this was where the good news ended. I don’t remember the names of our waiters that night, they were polite but they were rushed and didn’t explain the menu or offer any conversation, it was all business. I expected the food to be better than on Carnival, which I’d say both cruises was hit and miss but overall good maybe 75% of the time. I’d say FoS main dining room food was good maybe 45% of the time. The first night Lee had the prawn cocktail which was meant to come with a sauce, 3 prawns and no sauce. I had a lamb broth that tasted like a cup of Bovril (UK guys will know what I mean here). Lee then had a seafood linguine which was lacking in seafood and I had a piece of tenderloin which I expected to be a steak… it was like an inch chunk of roast beef and it was cold. I couldn’t be bothered to send it back and we left less than impressed but told ourselves it would get better.

We were in room 8307, a family promenade room, and we loved it! We never heard any noise from the promenade.

FunFX - really I'm impressed by the noise proofing of the rooms then. I imagine it's nice to have the window letting some light in!

Day 2 - Sea Day

I just realised how long my first 2 posts were! Promise they will get shorter and I'll ramble less!:)

Sea days for us are always pretty uneventful, we just like to relax and sunbathe. We got up about 8.15 (woo jet lag is clearing up!) and had breakfast in the WJ. We went a little wild it being the first breakfast and I have to say I was amazed the scrambled egg was good and not powered! We marvelled over there being corned beef hash at breakfast time, this is a dinner meal in the UK, so piled that on the plates too with a bunch of hash browns and some French toast. As usual it was pretty busy trying to find a sun bed but we eventually found some where it wasn't too windy on the port side above the main pool. There wasn't a shortage of beds at all just a shortage of prime spots where it wasn't blowing a gale! We spent the rest of the day chilling and making the most of the drinks package :D. There was some live music playing by the pool, I think the band were called rhythm explosion and I came to love them, they were great!

For lunch we tried Jonny rockets with the £6.95 cover charge. We had some chilli cheese fries and shared a couple of burgers. Couldn't believe that even with a cover charge the milkshakes cost extra! Unbelievable. I had a coke float instead. This is another point for carnival as they have Guys Burgers which are easily the same as Jonny rockets and they're included in the price and right there in the buffet restaurant.

Afterwards we checked out the kids arcade and played some air hockey, watched some people on the flow rider and played mini golf. Would have been cool to try the flow rider but there is a big audience watching and there no way I was willing to face plant in front of that many people! After our lunch had settled we went to the gym before getting changed of dinner. It was pretty big with plenty of cardio machine and quite a few weights machines too and a small free weights areas.

Tonight was formal night. We always dress like to dress up as we don't get many occasions to except for weddings and at Christmas parties. Finally I found some exciting cocktails to try at R Bar, they had some delicious ones including a red velvet martini! Tonight dinner was better. We sat in an area with waiters called Jose and Delroy and they were lovely. The food was better too, we both had scallops followed by Rosemary chicken.

Nice Review. I enjoyed your rambling. Ramble on. We cruise on the FOS for the first time ever on a RCI ship this fall.

Sailed a lot on Carnival. Princess Some on HAL. NCL. One on Celebrity.

Never had a bad cruise. Still always good to read other's impressions.

Thanks for takin the time to write it.

MY daughter is determined that WE go on a cruise next summer to Scotland ( Orkney Islands. Kirkwall.), Norway, Denmark....Finland if possible. AND LONDON. You know it! Ancestry.com has lit a fire in that girl...............She wants to see where we came from...so as to speak.

I am saving like mad right now. Really want to make that trip too!

Cruising to me is like taking your hotel and restaurants with you. I love that. You don't have to fool with other reservations. Plus the Tours are on the ship....where you can buy them. Like that too.

E23NK1 – Yes the bartenders were lovely, there was a lady (I forgot her name too) that was really good. It was always so busy in there before the 8pm seating being right by the dining room but if you went just after 8pm it was much better. Ahhh if only I had a red velvet martini right now!

AmberTeka - FoS is a beautiful ship you will have the best time. I did my other two cruises in fall so it felt a bit weird going away in spring this year. Strangely enough we met another couple on an excursion who had a teenage daughter who was desperate to go to Scotland. Lee is from the highlands in Scotland so we head up quite a bit and it really is a beautiful country (England is nice too honest!). Hopefully you make it on the cruise :)

We woke up about 8am as we were docking at Labadee. I was already feeling the effects of too much food and my stomach didn’t feel great so had a bowl of cereal and a banana for breakfast; Lee had a plate of eggs and French toast… I was jealous. The forecast was for an overcast day but when we got off the ship around 9.30.am it was still hot. I’d already looked at the map of the area at Labadee and so I knew we needed to walk right along the beach to the furthest part to get to Columbus Cove. We had planned on just chilling and didn’t really look at any of the attractions i.e. the water slide, roller coaster, zip line etc. All I wanted was to get myself a labadozie! I believe there was a boat and a shuttle truck up to Columbus cove but it really only was a 15 minute walk at a slow pace and it was nice to see the area. We almost stopped at Nellies beach as it looked lovely and the over water cabanas looked impressive, though the prices are scary but we pushed on the CC and got ourselves some beds just back from the water. I’ve seen people write some uncomplimentary things about Labadee but the beach was beautiful. The water was turquoise and crystal clear (if a bit cold) and the sand was perfectly white, it looked as much of a post card picture as the beaches in St. Thomas! We headed into the sea straight away and there was a huge starfish just chilling a few feet into the water, I’ve never seen one before so cue 100 pictures of the starfish! :D

We sunbathed until about 1pm when we decided to check out the buffet, I had had a couple of the famous labadozie’s by then and they were as good as I expected. I didn’t want to risk anything too hard on my stomach so just had salad while Lee had some BBQ chicken with rice & peas it looked pretty good. We spent the rest of the day in and out of the sea and stayed until about 3.30 and by this time the sunshine was out. We thought it was getting pretty quiet and people seemed to be leaving and we thought that’s strange it’s only 2.30pm, then we realised our phones had updated to island time and thank goodness we realised sooner rather than later. After this I sent my phone to Miami time so it wouldn’t update again by itself! We were still back on the ship with plenty of time and we were able to grab a drink on the pool deck and take some pictures as we pulled out of the dock. Firstly though we had been craving ice cream and so we went down to Ben & Jerrys on the promenade and got two ice-creams which were HUGE, although only after buying them did we sit down and see the Banana Split and get food envy.

Once the ice cream had digested we went to the gym before getting ready for dinner. We had pre-drinks in the Bull & Bear which was very quiet at this time but was always packed whenever we went by later in the night (usually with merry English people haha). The bar tender in there was really sweet and kept coming to the table to take our orders. They have a HUGE selection of world beers and lots of beertini’s – yes I know that beer in a cocktail sounds wrong but I’ve long been a fan of the lagerita (larger in a margarita) and so I was happy to try a few more beer inspired offerings! We had 3 drinks in the B&B before our 8pm reservation at Giovanni’s Table which I had booked online. We had gone back and forth between booking Giovanni’s and Chops but had decided on Giovanni’s as it was something different – we had done the steak restaurant on our last 2 cruises. This is where I have another gripe about dress code. So Lee had brought an additional pair of smart trousers, shirt & tie as the dress code for the speciality restaurants is smart casual. We walked in and saw people dressed in shorts and t-shirts (sigh). The dress codes clearly weren’t enforced despite being written in the cruise compass, so basically if you are worried about what to take with you don’t be, I think you could rock up naked and still be allowed in J Anyway enough ranting and on to the food… it was beautiful! They encourage you to try a few different dishes but we weren’t sure on portion size so we let the waiter recommend how many to order. I wanted to look up online what we ate but it seems the menu’s differ quite a bit so can’t find our exact meals but we had scallops and these mozzarella & prosciutto breads to start, then we had some spinach and ricotta crepes (I LOVED these) and a crab ravioli then for the main entrée we both had the fillet mignon which was to die for. Too stuffed for dessert we asked if we could get some to go and our waiter brought over a trolley with a few different deserts on then persuaded us to try a bit of everything and really heaped up the plate! He was also really sweet and didn’t charge us the extra on a glass of wine Lee had which was over the $8 threshold on his drinks package.

Dinner was over by about 9.15 and although we were stuffed we had a wander round to avoid going to sleep on a full stomach and making ourselves ill. We went to the café promenade and I got a peppermint tea. I was surprised to see an English breakfast tea on the ship which actually tasted ok. They have the awful Lipton’s tea on carnival ships which they don’t sell in England so you know it won’t be good tea haha, that’s a point to RCI! We had actually gone into the Promenade Café on our first day (forgot to mention) and had a couple of the little sandwiches which were pretty poor (although Lee told me the cheesecake pop cakes were good). On the Carnival Liberty they had a deli in the buffet restaurant which served panini’s, toasted sandwiches and baguettes made to order – sorry another point to Carnival here! The promenade was really busy there was a 70’s disco party due to begin at 10.30. We waited around browsing the shops to see what all the fuss was about and saw the start of the performance where there were singers and dancers decked out in 70’s gear. They were also selling drinks in cups with flashing LED bottoms which I thought was quite fun. Tiredness got the better of us though and we only lasted until about 10.45, honestly anyone would think we were in our 60’s not out late 20’s / early 30’s – in fact I saw 60 year olds outlasting us!

Attempted to upload some pictures but my files are too big :( oh well onwards without!

Hey! I was also on this cruise! It was my first -- but not my last. :)

Can't wait to read your report!

Just read your top 10 favourite things on your blog and I have to agree with you on the beds. I found the bed sooo comfy! I also loved watching Star Wars under the stars it was a real novelty. Enjoy your time on oasis next year, I'm very jealous of all those with another cruise booked!

Enjoy reading your review so far. It looks like you had plenty to drink. I am torn as to purchasing a drink package or not. I'm not a big drinker but do enjoy a drink of the day and a few glasses of wine with dinner as well as later in the evening. Do you think the package was worth it?

Im not sure I would buy one if it hadn't been included in my fare price, I just paid a little extra to upgrade. We definitely drank a lot more with having one than we would have done normally. If I remeber rightly cocktails were $10 - $12 so the drink of the day was probabaly a little less than that. The premium package is $50 dollars a day so you have to buy 5 cocktails or even more in wine / beer terms to break even. If say if it's just the odd cocktail and wine with dinner maybe not worth it as I'm sure you can take a certain amount of wine on board with you. Hope that helps.

Here's a way you can look at it, with a bit more ease...

1) Many of the mixed drinks are $10-$12/drink from what most say....

2) wines are $8/glass on average (but you can get up to $12/glass)

3) sodas and water bottles are also included in the package...

so it comes down to a few things, depending on the person...

1) Do you think you'd be drinking throughout the day prior to meals (and I don't mean binge drink or drink all day, I mean..maybe a mixed drink or two during the day at the pool, or in a casino)?

2) do you think you'd want a mixed drink or wine or so during your evening meals? If so, what is your normal during a meal? 1 glass? 2 glasses?

3) Would you have any during the after meal events or during your free time?

It takes about 5 or 6 mixed drinks/day to come up even on the Premium package depending if your preferred drinks are the $10 or the $12 (that's ONLY drinking mixed drinks, count in water, sodas, etc, and it takes less of them combined with sodas/teas/water/coffee in intervals).

But it can easily be done, non-binge drinking too, if you are the type that likes to have drinks spaced out throughout a day...a coffee or juice in the morning...a mixed drink at the pool before lunch...then a water...then maybe another mixed drink or 2 in early afternoon....then water....then tea/soda and maybe a glass of wine at dinner...then a mixed drink or so at an evening show. See how you can easily get to the break-even limit without ever binge drinking?

Many look at trying to calculate their break even as alcohol only, not how much liquid they'd intake in all forms, as the package works as a combined alcohol and beverages package, not just an alcohol one. Now if you are a person that has a decent alcohol tolerance and can drink more in a sitting in the evenings, it easily can be of benefit. If you barely drink but one (maybe 2) alcoholic drink in a day (or less), best to go with a cheaper non-alcoholic package and pay for the drinks by drink. If you mainly drink beers or wines, best to go with the select package...or just bring the allotted bottle of wine on board, get the sodas package, and pay per drink after the wine you brought is gone. Just depends on the person and their habits/preference.

Just a note as an additional perk to a premium package...it also allows you to try drinks you've never tried with no guilt of "paying for it and not liking it". You don't like it, just get a different one with your package. Doesn't cost you anything additional like it would in a bar paying cash per drink. ;)

I was really excited today as had booked an excursion to the Blue Hole based on the good reviews from CC, it cost $75 pp. After another breakfast of eggs and hash browns we went down to deck 2 to join the queue to depart as soon as the boat docked. Once on land we had to ask directions of the port staff in order to find the independent excursion pick up area but we soon did and met the representative from Liberty Tours, Marie-Rose. There were 3 other couples joining us on the trip and although it was about a 90 minute drive Marie-Rose spoke about Jamaica and their history the whole way so it was kind of interesting.

When we got to the Blue Hole we met our next guide who was called Alex. Be warned if you decide to do this excursion you 100% need water shoes at there is a lot of climbing over rocks, but luckily none of them were slippery. We headed river where there are maybe 3 or 4 waterfalls and pools and Alex took everyone’s cameras so he could take some pictures which was nice. It was rather busy due to their being 4 ships in port and I think they must have all arrived before the Freedom. I think it would be wonderful to visit the BH when you can better explore the area however even with the number of people we did all the jumps and Alex was happy to let people go for a second time if they wanted, he wasn’t hurrying us along. From memory I think there were 4 jumps into pools and a final rope swing at the end, I think we were there just less than 2 hours. We made sure to tip Alex.

On return the car, where Rose-Marie had waited and I felt safe leaving the small out of money we had brought and our clothes and phones, we set of to Scotchies for lunch. We had jerk chicken and rice here and although it was good I couldn’t really say it was any better than that I’d get in a Caribbean chain restaurant at home. The bottle of red strip we paid extra for though went down a treat! They also had free wifi which we were forever on the lookout for :)

After a brief look round Falmouth port area once we returned from the excursion we got back on the sip about 4.30. We were peckish to decide to get a slice of pizza… big mistake ! It honestly tasted like it was topping placed on a piece of cardboard, I didn’t know it was possible to make pizza taste that bad. So food abandoned we decided to just head up to the solarium and chill in the hot tub with a drink instead. Going later in the day seemed to be the key with the hot tubs as they were always busy in the afternoons, would have loved to have visited one at night but we just didn’t get a chance.

We planned to watch the new Star Wars film on the big screen by the pool at 8pm and so decided to go for dinner around 7pm. Unfortunately two were told there would be no tables for 2 available until 8.30pm – I guess as we had usually been eating after 8pm we hadn’t realised it might get busy at other times. So if you want to eat earlier on MTD, I would suggest making booking for the week. Unable to eat in the MDR we headed to the WJ – wow I felt over dressed in there even just in a flowery dress and heeled sandals. The selection in the WJ was pretty big and the salad bar had more on offer than at lunch… I went a little wild with my starter salad. They a stand making Caribbean wraps to order so I had one of them next with some goat curry & fried plantain, both were lovely. We also had a side of sushi from the sushi stand, they didn’t have sashimi but the selection of California rolls was good. I really wanted a crepe from the made to order stand for dessert but was too full and we were already late for star wars. Visiting the WJ for dinner was really eye opening, we’ve never eaten dinner in the buffet before and I always expected the buffet hot food to be dry, poor quality etc. but we were having such mediocre to poor food in the MDR that I appreciated actually being able to see what I was getting up front and the fact there were some made to order options was great.

Tip for movie nights – Get there early, we spent a while trying to find a spot we could see the screen without it being obstructed and I’m sure annoyed other people with our faffing as we arrived a little late… oops! :o
