Has anyone been on a cruise with a failed engine... or worse?

Our first cruise was a Valentines Day cruise on the Carnival Destiny in 2000. The ship was dead in the water on Tuesday Morning. It was one of our best cruises. :)

Certainly there have been several here, last year there seemed to be a run of them.... you could probably search on Ecstasy, and Glory, and find some good stories... there were others. It really did seem to be a run of bad luck!!!

1993...Mississippi Queen...Had to end cruise in St. Guenivie Missouri due to flooding on Mississippi...

1996 Royal Viking Sun ...boat hit a reef entering the STraits of Tiran in the REd sea and we beached in Egypt. lost power. Towed to Sharm el Sheik to be evacuated..

2005 Road to Mandalay in Burma hit a sand bar in the Irriwaddy. Had to be evacuated.

Lots of adventures..and changes of plans...but as Helen Keller said..

"Life is either a daring adventure...or nothing.." We prefer a daring adventure and will continue to travel.:)

i was on the imagention at the time and the engine didn't work and out power went out and stuff they wouldn't let us get off the boat (tenders) ...so we had to wait forever and almost cancelled the excruisions

Glory Feb last year. After initial stop at Nassau, our itinerary was changed to Freeport and Key West. Disappointing, but we made the best of it. :)

 

Pity, others didn't. :(

We were on the Destiny in February of 2000 also. I agree. Best cruise yet. Especially since they gave us a full refund.

Was on the Holiday and lost power a couple of times. No big deal just had another drink and looked out into the dark night sky. Then it broke down at the mouth of the Miss. river and they had to drop anchor to keep us from being pushed back out into the gulf. Didn't get started up the river until late the next morning. Had 2 tugs going along behind us in case it quit again. Most of the crew came out on deck because thy had never seen the delta in daylight before. Thought that was quite funny.

I was on the OLD Sun Princess in '80 when it caught fire shortly after leaving Vancouver. We hadn't had the life boat drill yet - back then, they had 24 hours after sailing to make sure that it was done. We were all sent to public rooms where we watched rescue and fireboats come out to the ship. The smell of smoke was incredible - 1 deck so full of smoke that you couldn't even see.

 

The fire turned out to be in a linen storage area across from our cabin. Fire out. Clean up done while we drifted just outside of Vancouver's harbor. About 3 hours later, we were allowed down to our cabin - we were amazed to find out that the fire was just across from us. You would have never known it - The closet and wall area was blocked off with a covering. But, our stuff didn't smell at all. I still don't know what they used to clean the passageway/wipe out that smokey smell.

 

Free pour that night - and a bottle of champagne for every cabin on our deck. Of course, I was only 15 so it didn't benefit me at all. btw - we had our lifeboat drill before leaving the boundary waters instead of the next morning as it was scheduled. The rest of the trip was awesome - and we all had a story to tell.

on the Elation a few years back....we had such a great time...we got into port about 12 hours late, but the thrill of skirting a cat 5 hurricane was well worth it!!!

I had a friend that was on the cruise ship that caught fire in Fall 1999. Needless to say it kinda ruined cruising for her.

Friends of mine were onboard the Ecstasy during the fire in July 1998, for their honeymoon. I remember watching it on TV, so worried, and thinking how horrible it looked... and just knew that they were miserable. It was not an ideal situation, but they went on their second cruise just a few months later, and they are forever hooked...

We were on the Holiday in February of '03. We has a complete loss of power while cruising toward the Gulf from NOLA. The ship drifted into the mud and got stuck. The power was restored quickly and the ship pulled itself free. But, we had to wait about 10 hours for the USCG and Lloyd's to inspect the ship for damage before being allowed to continue. This was only a 4 day cruise, so our 1 port of Cozumel was changed to a stop at Key West. By the time we arrived at KW, we only had about 3 hours of port time due to the 'Sunset Rule' in KW. On the way back to NOLA we were hit by sudden gale force winds which caused a severe list and a resulting breakage of many glass items throughout the ship.

It was certainly the most memorable cruises we have been on + we recieved $150 per person onboard credits and 50% off our next cruise. With the 50% off, we were able to afford to fly to Miami and cruise on the Paradise when she was still smoke free!

NCL Star had a malfunction that prevented us from going into Glacier Bay this Summer. We received a $200 on board credit but it surely didn't make up for the missed highlight. We squeezed for a shipboard credit and a price reduction on our next cruise. Not a bad comprimise.;)

They have a law (or rule) in Key West that no ships can block the sunset at the pier. Since we were not scheduled to be there that day, we were docked at the main pier and the ship had to be out of the way so that the sunset could be seen from the Mallory Square area, which is by the pier.

The local shopkeepers were very rude, and the people who had gathered to watch the sunset all cheered as the Holiday pulled away. I have NO desire to ever visit KW again!

The staff at CCL were very kind helpful. CCL was very generous while we were docked in Miami. We have only good things to say about that trip.

How soon people forget.....................remember, Norwegian Dream cruised most of the summer (2005) with not just one but, TWO "broken" engines. This has caused much "conversation" from disgruntled cruisers and "no" replies from NCL, despite newspaper articles, etc.

Up to the day of cruises, when passengers called the company we were told, "We have no knowledge of ANY problems with this ship."

We went with a positive attitude, planning to enjoy our time with our grown children but the negative conversations could have ruined our trip had we entered in.:cool:

Carnival treated us great!...we're addicted!

 

On Saturday we went to southbeach. While waiting for the van back to the ship we met a woman from Montreal. Air Canada lost her luggage at JFK. Her luggage was sent on to San Juan but ofcourse we never made San Juan and she still had no idea where it was back in Miami. She was on to Caracas on Monday. It taught us a good lesson; travel a day ahead.

We had to dock once in Key West due to a passenger needing emergency medical services (this was a substitute for Montego Bay, Jamaica) - they got some kind of "special permission" to be in port past sunset. We heard all about it - let me tell you!! We heard all about this rule and why it was such a big deal for us to be 'allowed' to stay past sunset...My hubby and I were sitting on the end of the pier watching the sunset, listening to the grumbling from some people...Good grief. There was a poor woman that had a severe heart attack, needed to get off the ship, we didn't know if this poor lady was going to live or die...and these people are worried about missing one sunset!!! (BTW - later in the cruise we heard that the lady did make it through fine!)
