Tipping Question

Super newbie here. Probably a very dumb question. We will be cruising Norwegian in Europe (starts in Copenhagen) next year. What currency do we use for tipping? I don't want to be the idiot American who assumes everyone takes (or wants) USD.

Either Euro or USD. Many times people arriving from another country tip in the currency of their home country. It is a tip and I would think that the porters will accept it. I would not look for Danish Kroner to tip.

If you have DKK (Danish Kroner) then tip porters at cruise with that. Otherwise use $$. On the ship it is $$.

I am also going on my first cruise with Carnival in October. We did prepay the gratuities. However, if you eat at a restaurant that is not included, I assume you should tip there? Such as the steakhouse, or the Chef's Table?

Thanks!

It is included in the cost for the specialty restaurant.

I live in Orlando, so getting DKK is super easy. As we'll be staying extra days in Copenhagen, I think that's how we'll go. We'll be needing it anyway.

Thank you, everyone.

We stayed two nights in Amsterdam so had DKK. We were taking hotel shuttle to ship from hotel. I kept some DKK as a tip for the driver since he was loading our luggage onto the bus and then unloading it at port and giving it to porters. I used the rest of my leftover DKK to pay down our hotel bill so there was less to be charged on credit card (I use Capitol One so no foreign fees) and I didn't have leftover DKK. The ship would exchange it for $$ but not at good rate so it was better to spend it on part of our hotel bill.

We always tip our room steward $20-30 for a 5 day cruise in addition to the pre-paid.

Wow. I must be a bigger tightwad than I thought! 😮

<which is really saying something as I always go behind my father and add enough to his usual $2 tip at restaurants to get it to 20%>

I would never imagine tipping a room attendant that much. Is $20 - $30 per day standard? We'll be on a 9 day cruise.

They didn't say 20-30 per day.

Not per day but for the cruise and certainly not standard. We use the auto tips and then add some depending on the service delivered.
