123veranda Posted October 3, 2016 #1 Share Posted October 3, 2016 Looking to sail out of NY on NCL in one of the haven suites. Anybody who has sailed both... Can you tell me the diff between the two? Good and bad. Thanks sooo much. Sent from my iPad using Forums
Sizzlechest Posted October 3, 2016 #2 Share Posted October 3, 2016 Breakaway + Slides + Rope Course + Better entertainment + Vibe (fee) + Ocean Blue (fee) + Cirque show (fee) - Crowds - Theater is small - Pools are small (If you're Haven, you will have your own pool area). - Atrium - Cost Gem + Spinnaker Lounge + Pools + Theater + Cost - Slides - Entertainment
skeeter195 Posted October 3, 2016 #3 Share Posted October 3, 2016 Breakaway positives -The Haven is nicer -outside activities -entertainment -lounges negatives -crowded, especially on rainly/cloudy days -theatre seating, horrible -pools -elevators Gem positives -spinnaker lounge -less hustle and bustle -pools and pool bars negatives -entertainment weaker overall Both ships have equal quality restaurants and service, with the Breakaway having a few more. To sum it up, I would say the Breakaway is better for families and keeping busy. The Gem is a better ship to relax on and enjoy some quieter times if that is what you are looking for. 123veranda Posted October 3, 2016 Author #4 Share Posted October 3, 2016 Thx 4 takin time 2 reply. Kinda looks like the breakaway has more. I'm am assuming the - in the cost means it's more expensive? I'm also assuming pools on gem are bigger? Sent from my iPad using Forums
mjkacmom Posted October 3, 2016 #5 Share Posted October 3, 2016 Breakaway is more expensive, and has smaller pools for a lot more people. We've sailed on the Jewel (Gem sister ship) and the breakaway, and I thought that I'd never want to go back on a Jewel class ship, but I liked them both equally as much, for different reasons. We are sailing on the Gem in May:
123veranda Posted October 3, 2016 Author #6 Share Posted October 3, 2016 Thx I definitely want to do one of them in 2018. I guess it depends on who I can get to go with me. Breakaway for kids & grandkids. Gem for friends. Thanks Sent from my iPad using Forums

Well, the Breakaway usually goes to more expensive destinations, but I believe a ticket on the Breakaway is going to be more than the Gem even when comparing apples-to-apples. I like to call the Jewel-class ships the "Goldilocks" ships when it comes to size. It's not too big and not too small. If you've never been on the Breakaway, do it. I've been on her twice and I can't see myself going on there a third time unless they make some changes to the entertainment. The shows are great, but after two cruises, it gets old. The Gem's main theater entertainment is like a bad Vegas show. Very kitschy. It's probably the weakest aspect of the ship.
