Beverage Packages

Why must all adults in one state room purchase the alcoholic beverage package? It's $49.95/day and while my husband drinks and will indulge, I won't use it at all as I'm a non-drinker. Has anyone else found a way around this?

Can you purchase only one package once on board?

I'm sailing on Vista in February btw. Super excited about the new ship!

#1 - purchase a bottle from bonus voyage to be delivered to your room and enjoy it there.

#2 - once your husband gets 1,500 points in the casino he can drink free.

#3 - if you're drinking very little, it's probably cheaper for him to just pay for each drink individually

You cannot purchase for only one person, even when you get on board.

I agree with you - just got back from the Conquest and we purchased the Cheers program. Hubby used it more that I did and was able to enjoy. I liked the specialty coffees that were included and I had water/soda at the pool. I do drink - love the Alchemy Bar and was able to enjoy the different drinks there. But I would not do again as I think it is a waste of money, at least for me.

All adults must purchase it because that's Carnival's rule. Nothing more complicated than that. No, there is no way around it. If the cost doesn't work out for the two of you, don't buy it and buy individual drinks. Do, however, consider the non-alcoholic drinks that have recently been added. That tipped us over to giving Cheers a shot on our next cruise. But I'm still unsure if its cheaper than just buying drinks one at a time.

we bought the cheers program on my first cruise, I haven't done so since. my wife has 2-3 drinks a day but usually no more. I cannot make up for her portion.

since I usually have beverages on land excursions I usually need a day or two at sea not drinking, to get my booze cruise legs back underneath me again.

carnival has pretty decent pricing so it's a no brainer for us.

just got back from NCL where bourbon on rocks was $20. I wish I had the all you can drink package on that cruise but we still about broke even based on her low consumption (even though I dramatically reduced mine due to cost).

Will he drink over $115 per day? Figuring the average drink is about $10, it takes about 12 alcohol drinks between the two of you to break even. As another poster said, if you are going to drink juice, soda, specialty coffee ($4 for a large), espresso or cappuccino in MDR ($2-4 ), non-alcoholic daiquiris etc, you would obviously reduce the number of alcoholic beverages needed.

Keep in mind that if you plan on being in port, then your drinks for that day will have to be consumed early in the morning, or in the afternoon and evening when you return. And if you are on a 7 day cruise, for many, that is a lot of alcohol.

DH and I tried Cheers for 3 days on a trip out of NY; 2 sea days and one port day and it was a struggle to break even on the port day. And no way would we keep up that pace for 7 days. We will just buy them as we go; I don't think we have ever had a bar tab over $400.

Why? Just because it's Carnival's policy, as people say.

I assume because it's not cost effective for Carnival otherwise due to sharing etc. I saw a post the other day where someone planned to share with her husband and booked him in a separate cabin with a kid to get the Cheers! So even with the restriction, it's an issue, but probably a much more minor one.

  • 9 months later...

Since it's been almost a year for this discussion I'm just checking to see if this is still the policy? I know I can't purchase it online this way but what about on board? What if I have a soda package (which I really won't use either) and he has cheers?

How much are beers or cocktails like martini or scotch?
