Venice questions

We are going to be on the Adriatic Embrace cruise on Sirena ending in Venice on September 11 and plan to stay 2 nights in Venice hotel. Any info on where ship will dock and suggestions on where to stay to be convenient from ship to hotel and hotel to airport for 7am flight. Looking for least hassle but interesting location. What would you do as a ship excursion and from the hotel on your own?

see this guide to Venice: http://www.tomsportguides.com/uploads/5/8/5/4/58547429/venice-05-06-2011.pdf

We ended a cruise on Marina in Venice last November, stayed 2 nights in Venice, then moved to a hotel just outside the airport for the night before our flight. There is no convenient hotel to stay in Venice for an early morning flight.

Water taxi or Alilaguna water bus service is available from the cruise terminal to destinations in Venice.

The Oceania ships seem to dock at the Venice Cruise Port. Here is a suggestion as to a lovely hotel to stay in and a great way to get to the airport - but not a cheap way! That will be my second suggestion...

Book a room at the Hotel Sant Angelo which is right on the Grand Canal (with its own dock) and is close to the Rialto bridge. Easy walking to just about anywhere in central Venice and a lovely, lovely hotel. On arrival in Venice get a water taxi to the hotel. (We paid €85 from the parking garage at the Tronchetto and the fare should be about the same...). Then book a water taxi for the morning you have to get to the airport by - I suppose - 0600. You will have to leave the hotel around 0515. That should cost somewhere around €100 depending on how many people and how much luggage.

Now for the cheaper version - take the "People Mover" to the Piazzale Roma and walk over to Pier D. Then take the Linea 1 vaporetto from the pier to Sant'Angelo. That will take you about 20 mins and is considerably cheaper than a water taxi. Should cost you €7 or so each plus the People Mover ticket.

Agree with looking at Tom's Port Guides. It is invaluable. We don't know what your budget is but not much is cheap in Venice. Pay very close attention to location and take in consideration your mobility and ability of lugging suitcases over the bridges which are really steps. We stayed close to the Piazzale Roma and it was convenient for what we needed to see. You will get lost walking around Venice. But, you will survive. We shared a water taxi to the port but we were at the other port for the smaller ships. We were on the Journey and not Oceania. We only had a ten minute walk and two bridges to get to our B and B and no bridges to get to the pickup point for the water taxi. It was a fun way to get to the ship. We loved Venice.

Hambagahle's advice is excellent. The Venice Cruise Port is almost certainly the docking location. SWMbI and I were there last November and spent 3 wonderful nights at the Hotel Rialto - virtually next to the Rialto Bridge and had a glorious time. Despite it being cold, the high season crowds were absent and we had no trouble going when and where we wished.

It was 85 euro's for the water taxi right to the front door of our hotel (two bags per person max on said taxi) and another 40 euro's taxi fare from hotel to the cruise port where your luggage is all handled by cruise staff.

Spend all the time you can afford there. Almost everything is in easy walking distance, including the farmer's market on the west? end of the bridge. It is a once in a lifetime experience not to be missed. There are numerous family style restaurants that are joys unto themselves.

We've stayed at Locanda Orseolo several times. It's on the Orseolo canal and just a few minutes walk to San Marco. We took a water taxi from the airport and another one to the port, just the reverse of what you'll be doing. It's a small inn, b&b with a lovely owner, Barbara, and wonderful staff. Venice is magical, so anywhere is wonderful. Have a fantastic trip.
