It was no problem boarding in Barcelona as i carried a case of sparkling water from Barcelona duty free in the shop carrier bag past security no problem.

You are making an incorrect assumption. Water is NOT permitted to be brought on board, still, sparkling, flavored, poisonous or whatever.

 

But as the others have pointed out, this prohibition is rarely enforced.

 

The "danger zone" is during spring break.
