Are shore excusions frequently sold out before sailing?

Never have been in this position before....but the disaster of a website has made it impossible for us to book any shore excursions for our upcoming cruise in February as many of our roll call folks have done already.

I can remember our first X cruise in Austrailia/NZ where our German tablemates could book NO excursions onboard as all of them were sold out. Never happened to us as we've always prebooked everything. Have booked two private ones through roll call but would like to book X ones for our particular itinerary in Asia.

If anyone has recent Asia cruise experience, I'd appreciate your input. Other X cruises we've taken have had plenty of onboard booking spots available.

If you want ship sponsored tours call the Captain's Club and they should be able to help. We did Hong Kong to Shanghai last March and never booked a ship's tour. We used our roll call to form some private tour groups and they were all great. We kept the groups down to 6 people execpt for our time in Beijing. We capped that one at 10 because the price per person going from 6 to 10 was just huge. It is much nicer just going around in a small group. We got to see a lot more, do a lot more and saved a ton of money.

Take this advice I quoted here. It's what we do as well. Trip Advisor will also tell you some of the best companies to use if you don't have luck on your roll call or in the ports section here. Don't worry about the ship leaving - the companies would be out of business if they got you there late, they know how to do it.
