Duty free in noumea

Don't count on much duty free in Noumea. Marlenes has alcohol, but whenever we have been there, they have very little stock - literally just a few bottles of half a dozen different brands of spirits, or even less than that. Perfume might be OK, but you would be wise to check out the prices on the ship before going ashore to see which is best.

Almost directly opposite the Cruise terminal in town you will find a duty free store. Not sure of the name, easy to find. The prices very good & well stocked with alcohol including Bundy rum. If you're in Port Vila probably better prices there.

Last time we were in Marlenes the perfume prices were on a par with Sydney retail prices.

Duty Free is not what it used to be.

A survey of 33 duty-free products by Consumer NZ has found that only 10 of these were sold at lower prices than mainstream retailers. In fact, some items were more expensive at duty free retailers.

A bit off topic, but the interesting thing about Excise Duty on spirits is that it's based only on alcohol content - $82.76 per litre of alcohol (except for brandy which is $77.30).

So a 700ml bottle of whisky at 43% alcohol content has excise of $82.76 x 0.43 x 0.7 = $24.91

Ignoring GST, that means a $50 bottle of whisky should be about half price duty free. An expensive bottle costing $100 in Aust, would only come down to about $75 excise free - say $65 to $70 allowing for GST.
