ddschur Posted November 22, 2017 #1 Share Posted November 22, 2017 Quick question: are there any issues or concerns re: Danube Water Levels? We will soon be embarking from Vienna and were wondering???

seawob Posted November 26, 2017 #5 Share Posted November 26, 2017 Just realize that levels on the Danube can change quickly. So true. We were on a Danube cruise the first week of September. After we boarded the boat at Nuremberg we were told we might have to swap boats mid cruise because the water level might be too low. Then it rained (and not a lot, but then again, I'm from Seattle) and on the 5th day of the cruise we had to swap boats at Linz because the water level was too high and the boat couldn't get under a certain bridge. Kenster Posted March 19, 2018 #6 Share Posted March 19, 2018 In late October 2016 we were on Avalon- Vienna to Amsterdam. The Danube river was very low. We were advised in advance about possible busing from ship to ship. It didn't happen for us BUT, it sure happened for nearly every other cruise line! We met three couples in Regensburg who were on Viking. They were on their THIRD ship, having to change twice. Avalon has very new ships and were designed with a shallow draft so we just cruised right on through when nearly every other cruise line was getting stuck and having to bus some very unhappy customers. (okay, they weren't literally getting stuck, as far as I know. They just couldn't make it any farther up, or down, river. So the pax had to be packed up and bused the other ship. Lyndonn Posted March 19, 2018 #7 Share Posted March 19, 2018 What is the typical water level on the Danube in early May? What happens if the cruise is cancelled due to flooding on the river?
Rare notamermaid Posted March 20, 2018 #8 Share Posted March 20, 2018 There is no typical water level in May as such, at least not that one can express it in reliable figures. There is something called the mean water level (a statistical average compiled from data of 10 years) and in May you can find the water level just below the mean, around the mean, a little above the mean or - if you are unlucky - flooding status which is quite a lot above the mean. If the cruise is cancelled while you are still at home, well you can fly and DIY in the country or stay at home. Terms and conditions for such a scenario are available online for you to read. Flooding and drought issues are normally excluded as regards full money back or even compensation. You might also be given the opportunity to fly home early. It depends on the cruise line. notamermaid
