cruisewiththekids Posted January 2, 2018 #1 Share Posted January 2, 2018 We are considering driving from Ohio to NY to embark Carnival Horizon on 5/28 (Memorial Day.) My first inclination was to do one of the park & cruise hotels in NJ. However, the one thing we want to do is visit the 9/11 memorial, preferably the morning the cruise departs. Logistically, I'm not sure how to accomplish that and whether being Memorial Day will complicate things. Is it possible to board the ship as early as possible, drop our bags and then go visit the memorial? I'm not sure that is even permitted, leaving the ship after embarking. Otherwise, it probably wouldn't make sense to leave our luggage at the NJ hotel, go into Manhattan to visit the memorial, go back to the hotel to retrieve luggage and back to the ship. If we do the memorial at the end of the cruise, we would again have the luggage issue. Any suggestions?
mjkacmom Posted January 2, 2018 #2 Share Posted January 2, 2018 You probably can’t board the ship until noon the earliest, and will be stuck with your carryons until later. If you have no carryons, you can drop your luggage with a porter around 9, go downtown, and then come back and go through security.
Brighton Line Posted January 2, 2018 #3 Share Posted January 2, 2018 Subway would be the fastest way, if you can walk to 50th St and 8th Ave and take the E to the last stop (lower level at 50th street) World Trade Center.
Rare mking8288 Posted January 2, 2018 #4 Share Posted January 2, 2018 Looks like your sailing is 5 PM with all abroad, no later than 3 PM - as long as you don't mind missing lunch or doing a late one. You can probably do this by packing a smaller personal bag with all the essentials, to keep with you at all times - and, drop off other luggage to be checked with the porter in the morning (they are typically at the terminal as early as 8 AM & will cheerfully take "custody" of your bags ... we tipped $2 per bag) Eat a big breakfast early before leaving the hotel/NJ and getting to the pier - do the above. Then leave the MCT and head downtown - subway will be on a holiday schedule, if there's 3 or 4 of you - Uber it (20 minutes should do ... traffic will be light) probably won't cost a lot more, as long as there is no surge pricing ... It will be the annual Fleet Week with tall ships on the Hudson, security is often known to be a little tighter around town. This should give you 3 to 3.5 hours or more to see the Memorial & any other nearby landmarks, start the return trip to the pier by 1:30 or 2 PM and you should be safe, catching the buffet lunch late - just make sure you re/confirm the sailing & all abroad time. kutty77 Posted January 11, 2018 #5 Share Posted January 11, 2018 the 9/11 memorial is so big and beautiful it might take you a while to go thru it and with it being Memorial weekend NY might be a bit more crazier
JerseyGirlJen Posted January 13, 2018 #6 Share Posted January 13, 2018 Fleet week is Memorial Day weekend, thousands of handsome military sailors invade NYC. [emoji7] keep that in mind as you look for hotels, and crowds will be heavier too. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
