pmd98052 Posted February 12, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 12, 2018 We arrive into LAX late Friday afternoon prior to a cruise. We're staying at the Westin LAX and I see there is a Liquor store quite close by (0.5 mile). Is this a safe walk say around 6pm on a Friday? Kartgv Posted February 13, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 13, 2018 What time of year - dark outside or not? We often stayed at a couple of different hotels in that area and it's not exactly a scenic or 'good' area. You might do better searching for a spot to stop on your way to the pier or, if there's time Friday evening or even early Saturday morning, take a cab or Uber to a grocery store or even a drug store between LAX & Manhattan Beach. Virtually all of them will sell liquor/wine at reasonable prices. The Concierge at the hotel can tell you the closest/best option. Honestly, by the time you factor in the cost of transportation, I'd probably skip it and just bite the bullet and buy the wine onboard.
CoW mAn Posted February 13, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 13, 2018 I've stayed at that Westin before, it's fine. I walked to the nearby Taco Bell and the nearby gas stations and was fine.
Husky61 Posted February 13, 2018 #4 Share Posted February 13, 2018 Crime can happen anytime at any place. So when you go somewhere and you weren't a victim of some crime, then you were safe. As far as walking on Century Blvd, at night or day, it has a lower crime rate than Venice. With all that said, the airport area is called the Westchester area, and is patrolled by the Pacific Division of LAPD. Over the last six months and the first two months of this year there were zero crimes against persons. In other words there were no assaults, rapes, or robberies. In my opinion I would't hesitate to walk to the liquor store.

If it’s during the summer months and plenty light at 6:00 pm, that lowers the risk... OTOH: 1) The neighborhood gets worse when you cross the 405...you are no longer in Westchester. 2) Crossing under the freeway subjects you to some added risk. An alternative would be to get an Uber (or even ask the hotel if they’ll shuttle you...maybe if you tip the driver nicely) to take you to the Ralphs supermarket on Sepulveda just north of LAX...safe environment...and you can get everything there...plus there are a lot of places nearby you can grab some dinner...
